This is a once in a lifetime experience, a restored palazzo in the heart of Mantua, with gorgeous frescos on the ceiling and rich heritage reflecting the many vicissitudes of history on the plain of Lombardy. The work which has been put in to restore the building after a century of neglect, and the care and attention which the owning family show, is remarkable. I wasn't sure why the room had a jacuzzi, but the bed was comfortable and the feeling of eerie solitude in the silence of the night was memorable and remarkable. There is no restaurant as the hotel is small, but lots of great osteria nearby. Parking is in a multistorey a five minute walk away - be careful not to cross into the "forbidden zone" of the restricted city centre as you navigate there. All the beauties of the Gonzaga palaces are within easy walking distance, too. The owners are very communicative and friendly, and assisted our navigation by whatsapp as we arrived.

There's a lot to like about this guest house (it can't be called a hotel), particularly its location. It's very close to the historic centre of Mantua, which is completely glorious, and to all the main sights. It's also undeniably very interesting to spend a night or two in a historic building of this kind. We had the enormous, vaulted cellar apartment, and it's an unusual and evocative space. Having said all that, however, I'm not sure we would rush back here. Reviews from 2018 talk with enthusiasm of the breakfast provided in the apartments, but the management has clearly decided to suspend that service, so that you have to go out and forage for breakfast in local cafes. That's fine if you're happy with the classic Italian breakfast of coffee and brioche, but not so great if you aren't. Also, although the apartments are advertised as having kitchens, that's a little misleading. (I had envisaged it as a kind of aparthotel from the description.) Our apartment had a very underpowered fridge, a kettle, and an espresso maker (with a rather ungenerous two pods). There's a hob and various empty cupboards, but there are no plates or cutlery. There's a sign saying that, if you want to use the kitchen, you should contact the management, but that seems rather a hassle if you are only there for a couple of nights. There wasn't too much sign of the free local parking listed on the site I booked from, either. The choice seemed to be either highly competitive metered street parking or a multi-storey a few blocks away. I wasn't sure that the romance of living in a historic building--or even the great location--fully compensated for all these inconveniences. The apartments are vast in terms of square metres, but the space isn't especially well thought out--there's a lovely and distinctive room, for example, the old ice room, but it's not furnished in such a way that you can actually use it. The apartment might work well for a family (there are two single bedrooms, as well as the double one), and that would presumably make it good value, but I'm not sure it really works for a couple. It isn't furnished in a way that enhances the space, either--it's all a bit 'hand me down,' as if an elderly relative had lent you their flat.

We found it difficult to know how to contact the reception when we arrived tired after an early flight, as the main gate was locked. Happily our helpful driver phoned for us. First impressions of our Chapel Suite were mixed. The main bedroom was indeed impressive but to put modern plumbing into such an historic building, mean the other bedroom was less so and quite narrow. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. Overall, we felt it was expensive and not good value for money, when even breakfast is not provided. Improvements could be to provide more coffee for the in room machine (only enough for one cup each, each day, unless you ask for more, although there are tea bags too). The bathroom was big but again, some good shower gel would have been better than the small tablets of soap. There is noise of scraping furniture and footfall from the floor above, late afternoon and in the morning. Lightbulbs needed replacing in one of the bedside lights. Position in Mantova is good and the whole old town is easy to reach. However if you need a taxi, as we did one rainy evening, the automated phone system to call one is challenging if you don’t speak Italian. We Googled how to do it but the sequence we encountered didn’t match the expected one, as the weather made the service busy. Happily a member of staff happened to be available to help. Impressive Palazzo but we would try an hotel next time. Not an unpleasant stay at all and the staff are so welcoming but have had much better value for money.

The Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga offers three modern third-floor apartments as well as its historic attractions. The one we stayed in was large and very comfortably furnished, with a superb bathroom, two televisions and a kitchen with the essential coffee-maker and kettle (though full use could be arranged for anyone wanting to self-cater). Spotlessly cleaned every day and the reception staff could not have been more helpful, advising on the best Mantuan attractions (well worth buying a Mantua Pass from the Tourist Info Centre) and restaurants, even getting us a reservation at a very popular one. Would certainly stay here again when visiting Mantua.

I must admit to changing the bookings a couple of times, wasn’t sure if we were to be 2 or 3 people. It landed up just my son and I. Eventually I booked a non refundable option and got the apartment. I don’t remember seeing a photo of it, all I can say is that we definitely didn’t see the “beauty and all that goes along with it” like in other reviews. We did NOT have breakfast, infact breakfast is not offered and you have to go down the street a 100m to eat something. On Sundays the cafe was closed and I was stuck 😬The checkin was friendly and quick, but we never saw the reception again or anyone at all for 3 days. There is a number you can call if you need anything. The apartment is big , but it gets a tad chilly though, has a kitchen which we didn’t use and a washing machine. We didn’t use that either. It was always clean, with a big bathroom (no bath unfortunately), always clean towels etc: the only thing was that it was lonely. We never saw a soul the entire weekend. I believed that we would be part of what others wrote about: lavish interiors and decorated ceilings and breakfasts in a stunning setting. Having said that: location was superb, there are 2 carparks 5 min walk away (one pay and one free).... there is no parking on site. Lovely restaurants nearby but do book. They get snapped up. I will be honest in saying that I booked accommodation that really was cheap for 3 nights, so I cannot complain, and just being in Italy makes me very happy. Do consult the reception if you are wanting a more cosy stay, perhaps in the other part of the building.

If you want to stay in a 400 years old HALL, not room, stay at Valenti Gonzaga museum. And another room in suite is a former chapel, adorned with real Flemish frescoes and chubby stucco angels. Staff more than friendly, garage available on premises. Try Osteria dell Oca nearby, great local food.

Once in a lifetime experience. We stayed breathless once we saw the place at first. The atmosphere was as from the Middle ages with all the comport you may have in a modern hotel. Francesca was a great hostess and told us some very interesting facts about that place.

Outstanding place! We are a family of three and we stayed in Suite Stemmi for three nights. Everything was exceptional. Very clean, really large rooms and bathroom, nice amenities, very friendly service, very convenient for location and parking. Our train in Milan was delayed and we had to check in late and worried about it but Viviana was so nice and accommodating, we couldn’t feel more welcomed. Cristina was also an outstanding host and accommodated our really early checkout. We really enjoyed Mantova and we haven’t had enough time to explore it but we will go back and we will try to stay again at the Palazzo. Thank you!

The "Historic Tavern" in the cellar-basement was a great to unique experience : 2 very large rooms, 2 additional sleeping rooms, 2 separate bathrooms, a suitable kitchen and breakfast room, all very clean and well done. It can hold up to 5 - 6 persons. Very good Wifi even in the cellar and a laptop for your convenience to use. Ample breakfast in the morning, served on time in the apartment itself. Situated about 10 min from the very center of Mantova; all important points easy to reach by walking. Very warm welcome by the staff, easy check-in and -out. Staff is very helpful with the luggage, as well when coming and as when leaving. Very good explnations about the city and a good list of typical restaurants, mostly with historic recipes. The private garage is very much recommended as parking in Mantova can be difficult and as the garage has access on same level to the basemant and the elevator.

We stayed for two nights in this delightful Palazzo - we chose the family suite which is spacious and full of interest - one bedroom was originally the chapel in the Palazzo - statues surround the walls and frescoes on the ceiling . The 2nd bedroom is in an adjoining room along with bathroom and seating area overlooking the central courtyard of the Palazzo . This is not like staying in a hotel but more like being in a quality Bed and Breakfast but there are staff working in the museum from about 8 am to 7 pm . Staff were very friendly and helpful - strongly recommend a stay here if you dont neet the full services that a 5 Star hotel provides
