Overall I'd say the Hotel Piazza Vecchia was worth the 10-minute (felt like 30) drive through the narrow stone streets filled with pedestrians in the Citta Alta. What we liked about the hotel: our room was spacious, nicely appointed and had a comfortable bed and a big bathroom. Also since it was pretty hot in Italy, we appreciated the air conditioning. Hotel Piazza Vecchia is owned by a family and they are very good hosts - gracious, efficient and helpful. The breakfast was wonderful - very good selection of local cheeses and meats, among other offerings like different breads, granola, fresh fruit. The hotel doesn't have a lounge or other public area so when you're there, you're really just in your room or eating in the breakfast area. But that's ok - given the location, you don't really need it. Highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel's Favorite
We stayed at the Piazza Vecchia for two nights in order to visit Bergamo Alta. Its location is perfect, right in the centre of things and a few steps from the Duomo. It is an unusual and most interesting small hotel as it has been inserted into a medieval building and it retains the atmosphere of its history in spite of having been completely modernised for its new role. Our stay was most enjoyable, not least because we were upgraded, which gave us a spacious room on the top floor with a large, spotlessly clean bathroom and a lovely small balcony where we spent the early evening with a glass in hand. We would certainly stay here again.

The location of this hotel could not be better for sightseeing and walking the high city and that is the cause of the first issue, getting there. Do not drive, eventhough the hotel will reserve you a garage parking spot not very far away. The Hotel is located in a traffic restricted zone. You have to drive on tiny streets packed with people at 2 mph. and no one wants to get out of your way. We drive all over Italy and it was tense for us. Taxis generally will not go into the high city on weekends or during the high vacation season due to this problem and if they do, it is very expensive. The other option is to take the cable car from the lower city and then push your bags to the hotel. Once you get to the hotel, there is not a porter or bellman to help you get your bags up a very steep 17 steps to the front desk or to your room. This is a "4" star hotel so this was quite disappointing (we are not as young as we used to be). BTW, the only way you know you are at the hotel is a small sign hanging over the door. It is very hard to see so look for the Pizzeria Da Franco and the hotel is right across the street. The room had a new and modern bathroom which was very nice but it is impossible to maintain a constant water temperature in the shower. This was mentioned in a review several years ago and nothing has been done to fix it. The rest of the room was dated and needed new chairs and linens. The A/C does work but the front desk controls the temp in the minimum in the room. The breakfast was a real weak point. The coffee was good but everything else offered was subpar, pre-packaged and more like vending machine food. The staff are very nice and do try and help you with any questions or directions. They are happy that you are staying at their hotel. The only exception for the older woman in the breakfast room. She always gave us a nasty look when we walked in. All in all I wrote this review so people will understand the complexity of getting to and staying at this hotel and not be surprised when you get there. The last item to address is the 4 star rating, in my opinion the hotel is a 3 star hotel mainly due to the lack of amenities such as a porter.

I would like to personally reply to this review: I am the “older woman of the breakfast room”, as well as the owner of the hotel. I can take constructive criticism, which are always appreciated, but I cannot accept the vile falshoods written by this user. Please, let the establishment of classification schemes of hotels to the expert in the field! The taxi service is available 24/7, 365 days a year, and drivers have always accompanied customers up to the entrance door of the hotel. Then, the prices are not determined by the hotel, but by the taxy company. Bathrooms have two different taps: the one of the cold water and the one of the hot water, so there is not a unique tap water mixing. Any cognizant person with a speck of common sense know how to regulate water in the shower. The hotel is situated along the main street and is fitted with a house number next door. Specific provisions of the municipality are foreseen as regards the sign: hotels are not allowed to display flags or too conspicuous signs. Each room is equipped with all the necessary amenities such as private bathroom with shower and WC, complimentary high-quality toiletries, hairdryer, air conditioning (controlled only from the inside of the room), tea making facilities, direct dial telephone, flatscreen TV and writing desk. Linen is provided on a regular basis from an ouside laundry service, which works with several 4 and 5 hotels in the area. If the quality of services perceived is subjective, the comment about breakfast it’s a pure lie! For breakfast, customers can enjoy a rich buffet made of handmade products of high quality which are provided every morning by local artisan businesses. Their (and our) purpose is to ensure a quality service. The only packaged products are those gluten-free. My continuing presence in the breakfast room serves to ensure that the buffet always be provided and that every customer request always be promptly satisfied. Sorry if you felt under observation, but certantly my intention has never been that of making feel customers uncomfortable, but I believe that this is a problem of social phobia. I hope you soon feel better and to simply enjoy life and the great pleasures that come with it. It is an unacceptable fact that a customer can tell lies, insult and wish to belittle other people’s work trying to warn anyone who wanted to stay with us. The only thing to which customer “have to be careful” is the content of reviews, because we reply without any fear as we are sure of the quality of the services we offer. It would be nice if a customer who’s got some problems, speaks out directly at the hotel reception, that could take action to fulfil all the requests or to fix any found issues. Reviews are not a way to solve problems, but they are used to take the mind off most frustration. Best regards

We stayed in Bergamo, for three nights and couldn't have been happier with the choice we made!!! Thank you to Kim,Carlo,Tiziana, and Angelica for marvelous service and advice!! Beautifully clean rooms, spacious bathrooms and the view from our windows were incredible, not to mention the church bells beautiful music!!! This hotel is in the middle of the" Citta' Alta", a step away from the Piazza Vecchia, surrounded by marvelous eatery and cafes and small shops!!! We especially appreciated the morning breakfast buffet which included everything you could possibly hope for in a European breakfast. My son in law especially loved the strong Americano made by Tiziana. We loved it, would recommend to my friends and family, and certainly return, I hope, someday!!!

We stayed in the 3rd floor suite overlooking the town. We loved this hotel and the location in Città Alta so much that we altered our plans to stay one more night. We enjoyed the light, fresh breakfast, the fantastic view from both windows, and hearing the bells. You do need to climb the steep stairs to the lobby but there was a lift from there to the upper floors. The staff was always friendly and helpful even with a midnight arrival time. The history of Bergamo is all around as soon as you step outside the door. Just be careful to look first before stepping out, because although traffic is very limited, cars can still come down the street very close to the door. We were able to get a taxi to pick up and drop off a few steps away.
