Beware if you are a Black traveler! The shocked & silent indignation of being Black travelers that we received at this hotel was unacceptable. When we arrived the stares received from the guests and the reception staff was annoying and uncomfortable. It was clear that they hardly ever receive Black guests that don't need to scratch their heads about how to pay for a hotel since we paid for the place before arriving. When we checked in the receptionist Francesca was taken aback when she saw my mother's, who is a US citizen, birthplace of Haiti. I am going to give the benefit of the doubt that when we checked in that afternoon it was on the same day that Haiti experienced its second devastating earthquake and she was "trying" to look empathetic. I had then asked if it was possible to have an ocean facing room and without even faking to look in the system a flat out 'NO we are full as it is an Italian holiday'. See at a five star hotel when interacting with guests you would think they could be more accommodating since you know that is what I paid for, excellent service. At least fake it to make it seem like you tried! The next issue came when trying to schedule our Covid tests to return to the US. When I asked about our covid testing she once again told us we needed to speak with the guest relations person who was not there for the rest of the day and do it the next day. When we did speak with the guest relations person she said we were supposed to take care of it with reception when we checked-in. Basically another push back and runaround. Every step of the way we did not feel welcome here. Even going out in Rapallo and the rest of Cinque Terre we are stared at as if we are an anomaly. The only saving grace was the receptionist Daniele, he was very nice and apologized for our cold welcome and provided us with free drinks at the bar. Mainly, after I had relayed the above concerns to my travel agent who called the hotel and advocated for us. Also the porters and housekeeping staff were very nice as well and didn't look down on us for being Black guests. The hotel is quite nice but we will never spend our money at the Excelsior or Rapallo ever again.…
My stay at this hotel was beyond great! I had an amazing time and everything was on point. Good customer services - staff were very friendly and helpful at all times, specially the staff by the swimming pool and the beach. The breakfast was just okay, not a lot of choices but a good breakfast. The facility were also very good and The infinity Pool was just Wow!! highly recommended this hotel to any. Solo, couple or family! Will definitely return.
The Excelsior has a grand presence and view on this spectacular coast leading to Santa Margherita and Portofino. The rooms are comfortable albeit 122 is somewhat small as a "classic" category without a desk to be able to work from. The "beach" is great in terms of access to sun loungers even in August far enough away from other guests and steps from the rocks into the sea.... with two pools as well. Gym has great, modern TechnoGym equipment and a beautiful view out onto the sea. The staff is obviously feeling the post Covid pressure with less of them and not as engaging. We have been going here for over 15years and will go back as the DNA is sound, they need to just catch a breath!
The Excelsior is a spectacular classic European hotel. The rooms are well appointed and the beach club which combines beautiful pools and the sea is stunning. The service was consistently excellent. I say classic European because it screams of a boutique European hotel rather than let’s say a Ritz Carlton which to us was a plus. A number of people here have complained about the breakfast buffet so we were very curious what it would entail. It is more than ample with everything from fresh fruit to eggs, quality pancakes to croissants. It feels, well, European but with plenty of options! But if you are looking for the enormous all you can eat Cancun breakfast buffet with omlelet stations etc (which are great in that setting) you will be disappointed. And this may not be the place for you anyway. Bravo!…
4 days stay in July 2021 Being a travel agency professional and owners of a travel agency in Scandinavia we are traveling a lot around the world and a few of them in five star resorts. Excelsior Palace is a real five star hotel and you will know right from the time you arrive and with your whole experience! It starts with Valet parking, a fantastic location and hospitality and personal service in the reception and a professional concierge. The beach club are really luxurious and with a breathtaking views. Here you also have the restaurant Eden Roc (not a part of the original Eden Roc we have been on in the French Riviera and on St Barth) with very attentive service and super tasty food. Tip: Try the pasta trofie and the one with walnuts! Overall a fantastic hotel with REAL five star service all over. Nice breakfast on a terrace and the city of Rapallo is Ok but not more. Good location for going to St Margararita Linguire (2km) and Portofino (7km) and of course Cinque Terre. If you have the budget opt for a room with a view over Portofino bay! We will be back!!…
