We spent a very nice week end in this wonderful place looking at the Vernazza and close to Corniglia. I suggest to go out from the highway at La Spezia and take the panoramic road to reach the Locanda Valeria because can be complicated with the local road through the forest.

My girlfriend and I have just returned from a weeks’ holiday staying in Locanda Valeria. I think if you are considering staying here, then it is important to understand the location of this property. The property (it is not a hotel) is not in Vernazza town. It is on the top of a hill, and Vernazza town is at the bottom. There are two ways of reaching the town from the property. By car it is a seven minute drive. The drive is along a very narrow, very windy, very steep lane. By narrow, I mean the lane is only one car wide. There are occasional passing spaces, but local Italians tend to park their cars in these spaces. By windy, I mean there are frequent hairpins where the road literally doubles back on itself. By steep, I mean that going downhill, I feared that I was going to ground the front bumper of my car. Prior to this trip, I had never blown my car horn in the UK, however, I blew my horn at the approach to every blind bend on this lane to avoid a collision. Over the course of the holiday, I was obliged to make this drive every day. On several occasions I met a car coming the other way. Sometimes this meant me reversing to a point where the other car could pass. Reversing up a steep hill around a blind hairpin, with a sheer drop to one side, focusses the mind. The alternative to driving into town, is to take the path. We did this. It took forty-five minutes to descend, and a little longer to ascend. It is extremely steep, and in parts is a climb requiring your hands, and not a walk. Other people staying at the hotel while we were there reported abandoning the path as ‘it was only fit for mountain goats’. There is no public transport or taxi from Vernazza to the property. I would advise filling your car with fuel before arriving, as the nearest petrol station is in a town call Levanto, which is a forty minute drive away. Other points to note are that during our stay of six days, a number of other guests arrived. None of them were met by any staff at the property. They had to telephone for someone to come and give them a room key etc., and then wait for them to arrive. The property comprises five rooms with bathrooms and a shared breakfast room. There is no reception etc. The property is only ‘staffed’ in the morning to serve breakfast and clean the rooms. Having said all of the above, we thought that the setting was beautiful, romantic, picturesque, peaceful and unique. Our room was light and airy and cleaned daily. Our balcony overlooked the sea.

-Nobody is there except breakfast hours. -Location is hard to reach without car. -No isolation between the rooms. +Breakfast was better than other italian hotels. Astonishing view (Seeing Monteresso and Vernazza castle from top) +No parking problem comparing to other villages in Cinque Terre. +Good Wifi +Comfortable rooms and balcony

The bed and breakfast had stunning views and very helpful staff. Please underscore that this does not have readily available transportation and a bus is needed to get to the location. I would stay there again!

Like an eagle's nest atop the mountain, between Corniglia and Vernassa, just off the hiking trail, sits Laconda Valeria, the most delightful, beautifully appointed B&B, with a panarama that is nothing less than breathtaking across the ocean and the coastline of the Cinque Terre. Perhaps best for people with transport, yet even for those without, with the friendliest, most helpful owner, they make every effort to help you get into and back out of the Village of Corniglia with the greatest of pleasure. I booked this B&B on-line, believing it to be in Vernassa, it was the best mistake I ever made as I had unknowingly booked myself a place in heaven.
