We arrived in Rome for a 2 week trip through Europe and this was our first stop. I was the perfect place to start our vacation. Trastevere is the coolest little district. Its laid back and at night the vibe is so fun. Convenient to...More
This is a lovely, quiet oasis just a few minutes from the lively restaurants and shops of the Trastevere district, not far from the Tiber. Our room was comfortable and beautifully furnished, with a second bedroom in an upstairs loft. We had a generous and...More
We really enjoyed our stay in Hotel Santa Maria. We had a quad room, with bunk beds for the kids. It was clean, functional and spacious. Moreover, in keeping with the whole hotel, it exuded charm. Breakfast is taken in the small courtyard surrounded by...More

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable
eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Yes there is a lot of graffiti and that would tend to put me off too. However, graffiti is widespread through Rome and we found the area felt safe. The hotel is enclosed by a wall and was a pleasant oasis within a bustling city. There were plenty of good places to eat and drink nearby plus you're only over the river from many of the attractions.
I hope this helps.
