The Westin Excelsior is absolutely a first-class hotel in a perfect location for touring all of Rome. The accommodations and service are exemplary. Totally exceeded our expectations. Much of this fantastic city is easily accessible from this perfect location.
If you read my reviews, then you know I think an "Excellent" review has to exceed my expectations. Although some hotels do this on many points, very few are able to do it so comprehensively for me as this hotel. I must admit, however, that much of the incredible experience my family had here may be dependent on the fact that it was amidst the COVID-19 scare. Out of 150 rooms, we were told only 15 were being used. Since the U.S. Embassy is a next-door neighbor, I imagine this is a popular hotel for those with business in the Embassy. The Location: As I stated above, it is right next door to the U.S. Embassy. I tried to get a tour of the embassy, but was told due to the current COVID-19 scare, only citizens with emergencies could get in. Apparently most of the staff had been sent home. The hotel is an easy walk to much of the shopping and restaurants. It's not immediately surrounded by them. If you like to walk out the door and immediately immerse yourself in tourist shops and restaurants, then this might not be the best choice for you, but it is closely located to nearly all of the main Rome attractions. Only the Vatican required transportation for us. Overall, we were pleased with the location. The Amenities: The fitness room in this hotel is top-notch. The room had machines, cables, dumbbells, benches, pretty much all I need for a great workout. The room is also manned most of the day. It's nice having an attendant when you need one. There was a cable machine unlike any I had seen, and I was able to get him to show me how it worked. Also there is a wet spa, a dry spa, etc. I can't recall if there was a swimming pool, but a quick web search should answer that for you if you care. The Staff: I have to reiterate that this hotel was very large and mostly empty which I'm sure impacted our service, but the service was truly remarkable. The front desk personnel were friendly and accommodating. Although we didn't make many requests, they eagerly provided whatever we asked for. The concierge desk was equally courteous and helpful. The maid service was also very friendly. If I had a single complaint it would simply be that I intentionally selected the option to receive extra points rather than have my room cleaned yet every time I returned to the room it was clear that the cleaning staff had been there. I guess you need to mention it to the front desk as well when you check-in to make sure your request is honored. The Restaurant: Of the 3 Marriott properties I stayed in during this week, this one had the best restaurant. It was large, had a wonderful buffet, and a dedicated omelet station. We were always the only people in the entire restaurant due to the virus scare, so we had 2-4 waiters working solely for us. One day the manager even came by to thank us for our business. Although technically only 2 people in my party get a free breakfast with my Ambassador Elite status, the staff here offered to let all 4 of us eat for free. That was fantastic because hotel restaurants are usually so expensive that it's cheaper to buy 4 breakfasts elsewhere than 2 at a hotel. The food selection for breakfast was vast including pastries, oatmeal, cereals, fruit, cheeses, meats, yogurts, bacon, eggs, etc. All very good. The Room: My children were given an adjoining room which was enormous. My spouse and I had an equally large room with a king bed, and the bathroom is roomy with a separate shower, jet tub, toilet, bidet, etc. Adjacent to our room was a separate living room. It was so large, we could have thrown a party for 20-25 people. When we arrived, we had a free bottle of wine, a cheese plate, bottled water in every room, and chocolates on the beds. This room was so amazing that I feel like I absolutely must have been upgraded. When all of Rome starting closing down for quarantine, we decided to leave for France, but I truly did not want to leave this room and hotel.…
Inspite of the worry about the coronaviris, we enjoyed our stay at the Excelsior. We have been staying at this hotel for years whenever we are in Rome. The service was excellent, the staff very pleasant and helpful the room was lovely and very comfortable and the food was excellent. I would definitely recommend this hotel! and the location is great!!!
We were travel mates of Mr & Mrs Felix, and Stayed in Room 320. We loved the Rustic furnishings and size of the room in general, the location was GREAT, and close to most monuments, as we were able to walk to most with no problem.
The hotel is nicely located within a short walking distance from the city center. 7 minutes walk from the main shopping street in rome . Close to the main attractions like Spanish steps. In a very safe area close to the American Embassy. 10 minutes walk from a very large and diversified eatery area full of restaurants and cafes .
