Exited to stay at Rome's top hotel only to be disappointed by service issues not normally associated with a 5 star $1k night hotel. We booked through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts. After a warm and friendly greeting we were treated to coffee and pastries while waiting for our early check in. There was no upgrade. Our Deluxe Double was spacious and had a small balcony with an awful view of interior walls. The carpet was very stained. Nice bathroom and dressing area. Drinks on 7th floor very expensive but worth it for the view. Housekeeping entered while we were in the room. Only half of the bed received turn down service. No wash cloths or hand towels were provided after housekeeping. No in room coffee machine so we ordered coffee the night before to be delivered before airport departure and had to hunt it down. Breakfast was terrible which is made worse by the fact you are in Rome where the pastries are to die for. The Hassler is an average hotel with a great location and a friendly, helpful staff but not worth the money and not up to the 5 star rating.

A wonderful family-run hotel in the grand city of the Dolce Vita - lovely hallway, super courteous and attentive staff at reception, concierge, breakfast and housekeeping. An immaculate and spacious room, and breakfast / evening aperitifs in the large internal courtyard at ground floor level due to Summertime weather still prevailing at end September. This hotel felt cozy and just like a home away from home.

I can' say enough good things about the service of the people who work there. Really amazing and kind helpful individuals. Unfortunately, lots of room for improvement with this hotel. We were very excited to book the "best hotel" in Rome. And, yes, location was great and staff were exceptionally kind and helpful, but the hotel needs significant improvement. Also, the building is beautiful, can't leave that out. Point form below for clarity and what to expect and room for improvement: - Rooms should be checked after cleaning staff finish their duties by a cleaning manager. When we checked in there were a number of cleanliness issues. The ear bud cleaners were open and had hair attached to them from previous guests I assume. This was very disconcerting and pretty unacceptable by any standard. -Coffee machine is old and difficult to use compared to a modern Nespresso -Chip bag had big greasy hand marks on them. -On the balcony somebody had shaved out there as the table and chairs were covered in hair, also pretty awful. -The cleaning staff threw away the bar of soap every day, very odd and have never encountered this at a hotel before, this is environmentally unacceptable in 2021. Why throw away a large bar of soap that has barely been touched each and every day? -Plastic everything, many 5 star hotels are moving towards more eco- friendly items, not the Hassler. Wasteful and plastic everything unfortunately. It costs less to use paper and not plastic, changes for a changing world, Hassler, please catch up. -Breakfast was 3 star at best. The croissants were terrible, stale and barely edible. The rest of the food was sparse and miserable and not of a five star standard. During covid they should scrap the terrible buffet and go to a la carte only. Honestly, the breakfast was shockingly bad for a 5 star hotel. Coffee at breakfast was good.

Second stay at the iconic Hassler Roma next to Trinita dei Monti and the Spanish Steps. Location and hardware are hard to beat (though I cannot put up with the UFO style bar counter in the otherwise picturesque courtyard…); service is quite outstanding: we booked 2 rooms via Leading Hotels and asked for a room with a balcony and terrace, Roberta from the reservations department was super responsive and see photo of the beautiful view from the room we were assigned. Many thanks for that!!!. Also, concierge desk is probably best in town: where other concierges ask for credit card information when booking a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Hassler simply confirms the table and takes care of the rest - very impressive, indeed! Breakfast in the courtyard was super nice and the ladies from the breakfast team were simply great! What could be improved: - Drinking water policy: you get 2 bottles of complimentary drinking water on the first day for the entire stay and only super small bottles during turn down. If you want to drink more water, you have to buy from room service or minibar for 10€ per bottle. Our 4 night stay happened to coincide with the hottest week ever with temperatures above 37 degrees celsius. Other than any other property during this trip, no extra water was provided for free. Even when we asked for water, water for purchase was offered. Only when we complained to front desk did they bring more of the smaller turn down water bottles to the room the next evening at turndown. It’s obviously not about the 10€ when you stay at the Hassler; but this felt very stingy to us when all other hotels during our trip such as Portrait Roma and Posta Vecchia treated water as essential and provided 2 full bottles of mineral water per day plus 2 big bottles at turndown. Please consider revising this policy because sometimes it is the essential stuff like water or the lack thereof which leave an impression. - Some younger staff, esp a lady at front desk, felt sort of generic and totally indifferent to the guest experience which was in sharp contrast to most other staff we met during the stay which is a bit awkward if this the first interaction you have. Maybe some training in conversation could be given here. We enjoyed our stay at Hassler Roma very much. If you are into storied grand hotels in iconic locations, this probably is the place to go in Roma.

Response from Paola Polidori, Vendite at Hotel Hassler

Dear Guest, I would like to thank you for having chosen to stay at the Hassler and also for having taken the time to share your experience with us. It is our constant aim to make our guests feel at home and to render their stay as memorable and comfortable as possible, so you can imagine how glad I am each time a valued guest takes time to write about the various aspects of his experience here at the Hassler. It was very flattering to know how well impressed you were with most all of our services and the whole experience you had describing your stay with us. Even more important and appreciated, were your comments concerning the two shortcomings you found, which are for us precious information because they are the key tool in correcting and improving our service in every detail. I look forward to welcoming you to the Hassler again, hoping that the future stores many other opportunities for you to return. Greetings from the Eternal City! Kindest regards, Roberto E. Wirth Proprietor and Executive President Presidente Esecutivo
