Nestled in a scenic locale, Grand Hotel Vesuvio has been lauded for its immaculate cleanliness and attentive service, with a shuttle that guests find convenient despite some minor issues. The tranquil setting offers picturesque views, though the trek to the center may be challenging for some. While the rooms are celebrated for their space and vistas, a few guests feel a refresh in decor is due. The hotel's amenities, including a sizeable pool and dining options, generally meet expectations, but the atmosphere and additional costs have received a mix of responses.

The Grand Hotel Vesuvio - Sorrento, like most, or all, of the hotels in Sorrento is located well uphill from the shore, perched on the side of the cliff/mountain. It is a large hotel, with a huge lobby, restaurants, terraces, and three lifts. The distance from the shore is balanced by a shuttle bus running 14 times daily from the hotel to the town below.
We had room #394 which was reached via a complicated route around and about down a long wing. The room itself, had a nice large balcony out onto a terraced area between wings of the hotel. (See pictures for a view from the balcony.)
Room #394 was large with two twin beds pushed together in European fashion, with a white duvet and four pillows. There were two nightstands, each with wall-mounted spotlights over the night stands. Those lights and the overhead light were controlled with switches at the bedside.. The room also had a desk/vanity table and a straight chair, a luggage bench, a medium sized TV standing on the vanity counter, a large double wardrobe closet, a refrigerator and mini-bar, and a phone in the room. There were one, or two, spare electrical outlets for charging purposes. The balcony was reached through a pair of louvered French Doors.
The bathroom had a tub/shower combo with a half glass panel; a bidet. A total of six towels were provided along with bar soap (but no face cloths or boxed tissue). The shower head was only fair to poor on the first night; but was changed out and replaced by the staff without us having to complain.

under the present extreme pandemic conditions we are so happy to have stayed in this hotel. It is spotless, our room over looking the pool and bay of Naples was spacious and well equipped. The large pool was fabulous and spotless and clean poolside towels were provided daily. Every staff member was polite, courteous and extremely helpful and friendly and went out of their way at meal times to cater for everyone's individual needs. Excellent location for chilling out and the hotel provides a fab courtesy bus (which is punctual to its timetable and takes only 5 mins) to take you to the town of Sorrento to explore its wonderful sights and sounds.
We had a wonderful time and are sorry to be leaving tomorrow. We would highly recommend this Hotel. thank you!

Have to compliment the whole staff team for making our recent stay memorable .
It is not normal to give such high praise although all in all this was a trip where every member of the staff team did everything to make the guest stay so enjoyable.
It is hard to pick out an individual member as many of the team gave their all to ensure a pleasurable guest experience.
The check in was quick and seemless with a porter on service to collect luggage from Reception up to the room.
The room was fantastic as this overlooked the bay towards Sorrento with plenty of moving scenery and sea traffic of cruise and tall ships as well as regular ferry services. We even had a part obscured view of Mount Vesuvius but still a fantastic view.
Getting back to the room which was cleaned daily by a very attentive maid and the room pleasantly decorated and very comfortable bed and large well appointed bath and shower room.
I have read unjustified reviews of the meals which were freshly made with a number of options as Starter Main and Dessert as well as salad together with good selection of drinks to accompany main meals.
Breakfast had plenty to choose although to be honest some of the pastries were drier than normal and hot breakfast was available but generally confined to scrambled eggs and bacon(continental)
However the upside was the very attentive and helpful restaurant staff even ensuring at customer getting a number of choices of breakfast coffee latte cappuccino espresso Amercano etc.
There was a well run free bus timetable to and from Sorrento.
I would encourage guests to map and plan out the day to ensure to make the most of this service to prevent having to use local taxi services which charge average of 20 to 22 euro for a 5 minute ride to or from the hotel.
To be fair the hotel cover this free service from breakfast till around 11pm although there are gaps to allow the driver gaps during the day to cover siesta times.
To add clarity I was a little concerned regarding comments about guest bills and being overcharged etc by other persons submitting reviews.Without doubt there was no evidence with our bill which was listed and itemised by date.
Finally there was a helpful pool attendant who ensured public safety to add to overall guest experience.
Check out was fine with a pack up breakfast as we had an early flight.
10/10 to staff team.
There is a wonderful outside seating area which overlooks the bay and Mount Vesuvius with attentive staff who help guests enjoy their evening.

This is my second time at this hotel and both times were perfect. Not sure why some write negative reviews....
The location is wonderful having far fetching views of Vesuvius ,especially whilst dining. You can walk easily into Sorrento, timed it to 15 mins, although 7 mins of this is on a bendy road without a path.No problem though if you have road sense and quite a few people walk this route so road users are aware of pedestrians. Probably difficult for elderly and families with children though or people that don't enjoy walking. There is a free mini bus that runs regularly up and down and doesn't miss, driven by a lovely friendly driver, who washed the bus down in between trips.
The staff were all attentive and extremely welcoming, most of the staff are same as when I visited four years ago.The waiters are polite and cheerful and will do their best to accommodate your needs. We ate vegetarian meals and had something delicious each evening and the breakfast choice was plentiful.Did not get chance to try everything as we were so full up. Couldn't be better. We got a packed breakfast for our final day as had an early start.
Our room was freshly decorated and bright and airy with a pleasant view of the lemon groves, very quiet too. The cleaning service was impeccable and everything was spotless, shower gels provided, soap, shoe cleaning, sewing kit, shower caps etc. Bath provided and the waterfall shower, was lovely.
The pool was amazing and I swam 20 lengths every day. Some moaned it was cold after sticking a toe in the water and retreating back to the lounger, but you get a lot of moaners and whingers about nothing. Plenty of English guests, not sure why the previous review states no English as we were there at the same time and we chatted with many English guests in the pool. Besides we went to experience Italy and chat to Italians, not look for English guests.
Theres a terrace and bar which to relax in and magnificent roof top views and sunbathing.
Cant wait to visit again.
Thank you to all hotel staff for making our stay memorable!

Good Covid-19 policies in place for safe enjoyment of guests
Excellent location with amazing views
Great regular shuttle service to Sorrento
Walking distance to Sorrento (20 mins)
Family suite was ideal for couple with two teenagers, very large with great views
Pool is a good 20m and spacious all round
Gardens and terraces overlooking Bay of Naples and provides lovely shade
Restaurant and Bar overlooking pool

We had breakfast included and this consisted of cereals, pastries, yogurts, fruit and cold meats, salmon. The waiters did not inform us that we could also order hot breakfast (hence 4 and not 5 stars) and we only found out by asking. It would have been nice is they had informed us of all options! But once we asked they were very accommodating.

Perfect place to stay if visiting Amalfi Coast

Having read all the negative reviews I felt the need to share my experience. We travelled as a family of six and were given 3 rooms next to each other on the 3rd floor.
The view from each room was a hedge, this did not matter to us as we only washed and slept in the room. The aircon was very efficient and quite. The room was very dated and our bathroom did smell of stale urine. The cleaners came daily but were always in a hurry as they had many rooms to attend to. Nothing used was ever replaced we had 2 paper cups only to last the 10 nights. Sheets were changed on a regular basis. In my opinion they needed more staff to allow more attention to detail.

The breakfast was fine, lots of choice both hot and cold. I am not sure why there are so many negative comments, we certainly had no complaints.
The evening meal was very good with adequate choice on each course The waiters were very smart, friendly, and efficient. The drinks were reasonably priced.

The pool was large and very clean the sun loungers were plentiful. There was also adequate shade. The snack bar was good and coffee only 2 euros. We had no complaints except for pool towels having to last in our case 10 days! More signs are needed to direct you to pool area lift around the never ending corridors.

The shuttle bus service was excellent my only suggestion would be for a stop by the station as it is quite a walk from the regular stop. Taxis were a ridiculous price and we declined to use them.

The people that are giving poor reports have to remember that it is a very reasonably priced hotel for the Sorrento area and if you take that into consideration it is very good value. If you expect more you need to pay more.

We were a bit concerned reading the reviews for this hotel but I can honestly say we had an amazing holiday.
We stayed in room 522 over looking the pool had a fantastic view of mount vesuvius and the bay of Naples.

The room was spotless, the beds were comfortable what more could you want? I’m not bothered about pictures on the wall I just want a clean place to sleep as don’t spend my holiday in the room.

Breakfast was self service with plenty of choice cereal, fruit, pastries, cheeses meats, bacon, sausage etc.

Dinner was waiter service with very polite waiters, 3 courses with a choice of dishes we found the pasta starter was large enough for a main course, plenty of salad to help yourself every night. We have no complaints about the food we never left hungry always had something we liked.

The only negative is we found the drinks expensive 4 euros for a small beer and 5 euros for a wine, considering Italy produce wine I thought it may of been cheaper but I guess all hotels charge the same price.

The courtesy bus was great we tended to walk into Sorrento and get the bus back. Walking into Sorrento takes about 20 mins along a busy road without a foot path for the first part we found lots people walked and the views are amazing.

We visited Pompeii and Herculaneum took the local train from Sorrento station it has a map above the door with the stops so easy to find and well worth a visit, we did it on 2 different day’s Herculaneum is furthest away takes almost an hour to get there. It only cost 6 euros return each to Herculaneum.

We also took the local bus to visit postiano and amalfi the bus stops outside the train station. We got a 24 hour ticket which cost 10 euros each, buy the train and bus tickets at newsagents next to the train station. We got off the bus in postiano first then went onto amalfi which was better for coming back as we got a seat. The bus gets really full and some had to stand when we picked up at postiano. They are both beautiful places to visit and the scenery is stunning to get there sit on the right hand side of the bud to get the best views.

Capri was our other outing would recommend there too, just take the ferry takes about 30 mins. When there we took the bus to anacapri then took the stairlift up the mountain amazing views and an experience would recommend doing. From the marina there a funicular railway takes you to capri town where all the designer shops are.

Sorrento is a lovely place with all the narrow cobbled streets shops and restaurants, we liked to sit and people watch at Fatto Mo Mo cafe/bar it was cheapest for drinks and so nice to chill out.

I would definitely go back to the hotel Vesuvius it’s got a huge pool and we never had any trouble getting a sun bed,
all the staff were so nice and friendly, we had an amazing holiday.

Although slightly out of town, this hotel is beautifully located at the top of the hill lending itself to some stunning views not to be missed. There is a free shuttle bus service that runs sporadically to and from the centre of town which actually isn’t that far. It’s definitely walkable for most however the walk would be dependent on how much you value your life! Hairpin roads and no pavement! The hotel itself lends itself to some interesting decor. You can see that the hotel has had an upgrade of sorts at some point trying to mix old with modern which hasn’t quite worked. That said the rooms were comfortable and clean. The one thing that lets this hotel down is the food. To say it’s substandard would be kind. We stayed half board (no choice through a tour operator) Breakfast was adequate and pleasant enough. The Al a Carte dining experience in the evening however was disappointing to say the least. The buffet style All Inclusive we have all long enjoyed in other countries is yet to make its way over to Italy and one can see why. However this hotel seems to have adopted the buffet style dinner service only behind the scenes. The tinned fruit, veg and even sea food was far from Al a Carte and such a shame when fresh produce is right on the doorstep. After several uneditable meals we chose to eat out where restaurants and quality were abundance.

What is good - Hotel beautiful, great views, good gym, good evening meals (especially the barbecue night), staff generally helpful, really good pool allowing inflatables, lovely rooms. English TV. Cons - Shuttle bus times not always convenient; we were often walking around Sorrento passing time, waiting for the bus (It's a hard life - ha ha). Breakfast could be better, there was a bit of a mad rush for pancakes if you came later and there was usually a queue for hot drinks machines. Lovely hotel. You get a nice big pool being slightly out of town, but for this you are dependent on the shuttle bus to get in and out of town. The road is OK for adults in the prime of their life to walk on but we had teenagers. We did walk down once; it was achievable but too risky knowing Italian drivers. Sorrento is an excellent holiday for a family who likes to do things, not just sit on a beach. We love Capri, Pompeii, Vesuvius. We also took the ferry to Naples which was tiring but interesting.

Me and my wife have recently just arrived back from 8 nights in Sorrento, which we stayed at The Grand Vesuvio. After reading all the comments about how the food was bad and the hotel was dated, it has good views etc etc, I thought i would still give it a go as it was within my price and date range and surely it couldn't be "THAT BAD", But unfortunately it really was.

Pro's –
The hotel itself is nice enough and located fairly high up and away from town, so you do get lovely views from the bar area, garden area, balconies and even the unused roof top area. The Staff are all very nice and welcoming and are all dressed very smart throughout the day and night. The free shuttle bus up and down to town is very handy, otherwise it takes its' about 15-20min walk down a steep winding road or a €25 taxi ride one way (robbing taxi drivers). The lovely cleaning staff would clean your room daily and change the towels.

Con’s –
We we’re half board and it really isn’t worth doing. The food is literally “THAT BAD” (sorry to the staff and chefs) But the breakfast is very basic in which you have small selection of pastries, half attempt at a cooked breakfast, few cold meats and breads and then some fruit and cereal. It all sounds the norm but it’s really poor-quality food. Lunch you have a snack menu to choose from or you can change your evening meal if you wish to your lunchtime meal and then you will have a le carte menu to choose from, but you need to tell the waiting staff if you want to change. Again, the food was so poor and bland off each menu. Evening time was even worse. They have the weirdest combinations of foods to choose from and again it’s so bland. Even on the menu it says some of these food items might be from frozen, and you can definitely tell. I do not understand when you have Sorrento and all the fresh produce in town, do you use frozen food. The owners need to sort it out, it’s embarrassing, and it must be even more for the staff who have to serve this stuff.

The pool area is okay, but all the sun loungers are dated and upon arrival you get given one pool towel each which is meant to last you the whole duration. There are no bins for used towels or anywhere to get a new one. Your just expected to take them up to your room, dry them, and then use again. I heard if you wanted a new towel, they charged your €5.

The hotel is indeed “Grand”, but it’s filled with emptiness. The same as the rooftop terrace. It is a great spot, very quiet, great views but again it’s a big emptiness. This hotel as so much potential but yet it seems to have been let down by its owners.

Safe to say we shall not be staying here again, and I would not recommend it to anyone wanting to book in Sorrento

The courtesy bus in to sorrento is very good, there’s several tour shops to book trips, we got picked up & dropped off at the hotel each time, it’s so easy. Or look at the amalfi boat trips through trip advisor and book before you go. We left it too late to do that and all the best rated ones were booked up.
