Travelers' Choice
The Imperial Hotel Tramontano ,overlooking the most beautiful part of the Gulf of Naples, nourished the romantic culture of the picturesque, sublime and landscapes of 19th century travellers visiting Sorrento. Along with the classic, refined and elegant style: the oldest wing dates back to the 16th century, and its architecture represents the most viewed image of Sorrento worldwide.

he hotel is built in a beautiful traditional style with lots of historic features. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The location of the hotel is TOP! Along the beautiful coastline and also very close to the old town centre of Sorrento where all the shops and restaurants are situated.. Also the hotel is directly in the middle of the Old Fisherman´s Harbour of Sorrento and the new harbour, where most of the ferries from and to Napels or Capri are docking.

We stayed for four nights in late October. After reading some of the reviews I was worried about the shower, the bed and the breakfast. While the shower is small, the water pressure was adequate and the temperature was plenty hot. If they ever re-do bathrooms, from a US citizen perspective, they could get rid of the badet and make the shower bigger. The breakfast was very nice. Always some eggs, bacon, sausage, meats, cheeses, breads and fresh juice. The bed was two twins put together, but it was fine. The concierge helped to arrange drives and tours for Pompeii and amalfi coast prior to arrival. Location and views can’t be beat. It is an older hotel and the rooms are on the smaller side, but it was a perfect launching pad to Sorrento and the rest of amalfi.

If you like a classy old hotel, this is just like that. The hotel and grounds are in great shape, the breakfast buffet is excellent, the lift to the beach is great and the employees are friendly and helpful. Overall service could be better, you sometimes have to seek out an employee to get some of the service, the pool and pool restaurant closes too early, and the rooms are smaller and a little outdated as you would expect from a hotel of this age. The location is excellent, just a few blocks bring you to lots of restaurants and shopping.

We spent seven lovely nights at this historic hotel. The location in Sorrento is perfecto on a quite street that sits on a cliff side in the Bay of Naples, but only a 2 minute walk from wonderful restaurants, shopping, and a 10 minute stroll to the train station. The staff are attentive and happy to provide a good experience—except in the bar where you have to play games and fluff egos to get service from the primary staff member that guests either love or hate. You have to be his favorite to get good service. The morning breakfast room service is outstanding. As someone who needs coffee before I can even brush my teeth, I was happy to receive coffee that was delivered in 5-10 minutes. The complimentary breakfast, which is somewhat formal, was the highlight for my husband. The gardens and pool area are spectacular with an insight bar-restaurant to serve you pool side. All that said, if you are from the U.S. and used to staying at 4-star hotels, you may find the rooms to be a little dated. Don’t let that stop you from enjoying the splendor this hotel has to offer.

No hot water in the shower. If you are ok with a lukewarm shower then this is the hotel for you. The best part is the hotel tells you that they don’t expect to have hot water. Bad attitude at the front desk. This is a beautiful hotel that could do better. From reading reviews it seems other have had the hot water issue too. For the money we pay they should fix the hot water issue.

Just spent a week here on an escorted tour. There is a good hotel somewhere in here trying to get out. As everyone has commented, the location cannot be bettered, right on the cliff edge with glorious views across the bay towards Vesuvius. Sorrento main centre is a five minute slight uphill walk but otherwise it is a peaceful location. The station is about 15 minute walk away. The hotel itself has very well kept grounds with all manner of exotic plants. The pool is small but very well maintained with a nice grill bar adjacent. All outdoor furniture is excellent quality. It could be very crowded in the summer, but early October with pleasant weather and the pool still open, it was a lovely spot. The hotel has kerb appeal and has a slight shabby grandeur that is not without charm. Chintz, satin and plush velvet abound, albeit a bit faded and stained. The staff are mainly very friendly. The reception staff are a bit snooty but were always helpful and courteous to us, the women maybe a bit more than the men. Our room was on the top floor overlooking the bay and quite a good size. We had a large furnished balcony. The room was a bit sparse and at first glance looked immaculate. However on closer inspection it was a bit tired with battered furniture and really poor paintwork. The bathroom was a fair size and in better condition. The towels were great, decent sized bath sheets you could wrap yourself in. We also had robes and slippers and top quality Etro toiletries (their perfumes are £120+ a pop!). The shower was fine although sometimes the water temperature fluctuated from cold to very hot. We had a fully stocked mini bar and housekeeping was excellent. What really let the room down were the beds. Whilst the bed linens were quality, the mattress was like concrete and the pillows were like bricks. Woke up most mornings more tired and really achy. Breakfast was a lavish buffet. It was pastry heavy - rather like an English afternoon tea. There was an endless selection of cakes, buns, flans, cream cakes, gateaux, sweet rolls and donuts. There was a rather unappetising looking cooked section complete with Brussel sprouts one morning and broccoli another. The coffee served was awful, shameful for Italy! There were always tables available complete with luxurious table linens and another glorious view over the bay. We were on half board but never used the restaurant for dinner as we were told by some people on out tour that the fixed menu dinner on offer was no better than poor school dinners. There was an old fashioned bar which we never went to but seemed quite popular. Sorrento was very busy but it is not very interesting and there are many shops selling the same tat (all lemon themed!) but there are many restaurants to choose from.

A grand old hotel in a Beautiful peaceful setting with first class services, rooms, and dining. You will not be disappointed! The view from the large opening windows down to the sea is spectacular. It is an easy walk into town or to a lift that takes you down to the harbour. The bar and restaurants both have tables with views inside and out and gardens throughout the property are spectacular. The rooms and palatial bathrooms are grandiose!

This is a perfect luxury Italian hotel. Located close to all the action yet you feel miles away when you’re at the hotel. The pool which has a gorgeous restaurant and hotel terrace that overlooks the ocean with the most incredible views of the gulf of Naples and the drinks are superb! We are in a garden room which is perfect. The rooms are large, beds are so comfortable and there’s a big terrace with a table and four chairs which made reading in the morning and late afternoons a delight. The terrace overlooks a gorgeous gardens. I can’t recommend this hotel more highly. The staff is friendly and accommodating theres a privacy and eloquence about this hotel. Perfect vacation!

We booked this hotel through Citalia and were very happy with the service they provided. The hotel is simply stunning, beautiful building with amazing views across the Bay of Naples. As mentioned in previous reviews we found the reception staff quite aloof and unhelpful; when asked about tours to take and places to visit they just told us to go to one of the shops in town. We weren't shown or told about any of the amenities in the hotel, not even the restaurant location. Our room was very clean and tidy, we had a small balcony overlooking the garden area and the sea, which was spectacular. The downside was the bathroom, very tiny and virtually impossible to stand in the shower. Would have been nice to have some free water and glasses not paper cups to drink from. This was a disappointment in 4 star hotel. Breakfast was fine, quite a lot of cakes and pastries, but adequate cooked items. We felt that the hotel really relies on its amazing central location, history and stunning building; but could definitely do with the bathrooms updating and reception staff being made aware that the hotel guests are necessary to keep the hotel running. Not sure we would return as there are plenty of other hotels in very similar locations to choose from. Such a shame really as we had hoped to be able to celebrate our Anniversary in a very special place and unfortunately the Imperial Hotel Tramontano didn't quite live up to our expectations.

This is a wonderful older classy, service-oriented hotel, walkable to all the things you want to visit and see in Sorrento. A wonderful place to relax when you are tired of the crowded, fast-paced chaos of the big city tourist adventures in Naples, Rome and Florence. It's not perfect, the beds are suprisingly stiff and uncomfortable, the bathroom door bumps into bidet when you open it, bed is in an upstairs loft reached by a steep marble staircase, going down is treacherous, first step is well into the walkway and hand railing is too low for those first few steps. But I will give this place all the stars for the stunning water view, cocktails on the view terrace, attentive service, the pool (which closes early at 6pm), and a most excellent breakfast buffet with a gorgeous view first thing in the morning.
