What an honor it was to have been able to stay 2 nights in this absolutely charming and beautifully unique hotel. The hotel has all the grandeur and beauty of a church originally built in 1300, but all the warmth of a friends home. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful and they serve a fantastic breakfast that will last you all day! I would love to come back to Matera one day and if I do, I'll definitely want to stay here.

I'm delighted to join the rest of great reviews about this wonderful hotel. It is a beautiful gem in the heart of the Sassi, full of charm and superb location. It certainly reflects the rebirth of Matera as a unique place that should be in everyone bucket list. Bellissimo hotel!

When we first discovered this lovely hotel in 2015, we promised ourselves to return one day to stay here. And this year, 2019, we kept that promise. The outside is unpretentious as its name suggests: "The hotel in the rock." The magnificent lobby is literally a cave carved into the tuffa with soaring ceilings, tasteful niches and all accented by warm golden lighting. During our stay we were greeted by Lucia Motolo, the lovely receptionist who turns out to be Matera's as well as the hotel's secret weapon, a would-be ambassador to Matera who speaks excellent English, expressing joy in her city and region. Having reserved well in advance, we had suite #1003: a spectacular room with not only a jacuzzi but its own private balcony overlooking Sasso Barisano. Each of the hotel's rooms is unique, and all share the outstanding breakfast each morning and the exceptional service from the hotel staff. Roberto, the owner, and the other staff members, Francesca, Marta, Carmella, and Piero, could not have been more helpful. Matera is an exceptionally beautiful and historic city, designated this year as a European Capital of Culture. During our 2 week stay we never tired of exploring its narrow streets and its depths of history. L'Hotel in Pietra is the perfect location from which to explore this city that never ceases to amaze!

The town of Matera is quickly losing it's previously undiscovered status. My advice is to see it soon and even more importantly, stay in this hotel. Like virtually every hotel in the historic Sassi , it isn't easy to get to. But once you get there, it is so worthwhile. A beautifully restored old church in a cave, but still the best thing about the hotel are the staff led by Roberto and Lucia. If we are lucky enough to return, this is where we will stay without a doubt.

What a beautiful boutique hotel this is in the historic old town of Matera. We are so glad we chose to stay here! We have spent 5 nights here in suite 1007, and would happily return if we are lucky enough to return to this gorgeous part of Italy. Matera itself is wonderful, so interesting and unlike anywhere else we've visited. It is hilly, with hundreds of steps, so would be difficult if you are mobility impaired. The hotel is charming and the staff are first class. We have felt like we are amongst family. Simply cannot recommend L'hotel in Pietra enough!
