Incredible location with the hotel incorporated into the caves of the countryside. Quite an experience with the main lobby an old church built into the ancient rockface. Some of the rooms a little on the tight side. Very helpful staff. Pack light if you are carrying your bags from the car!

How magical is this hotel? And how elegant is Matera? My phone had no network when I reached Matera Centrale. I was really concerned that I wouldn't be able to find the hotel. Somehow my instinct worked its magic, and in less than 10 minutes I found myself in front of the hotel. From the moment I walked in, I... More

Real experience which will stay with us for a long time. Staying in a cave dug out of the cliff which was used as a church, is always going to be a compromise. If you like square spaces and smooth floors - then this is not the hotel for you in a town you will hate. It's all up and... More

This beautifully restored small boutique hotel, a former church dug in the stone, provided a tranquil& beautiful experience. We had a very small bilevel room requiring a climb up to the bedroom loft..a bit challenging for a mature couple but still a thoroughly enjoyable experiece to be sleeping in cave-like quarters. The renovation shows respect for its historical origins.Breakfast was handsome... More

Stayed here with my husband during the Festa Della Bruna and it is just beautiful. Converted from a 13th century chapel, right in the heart of the Sassi. Because of where it is you can't park but the lovely staff advised us well and very really helpful throughout our stay. The room was stunning, really large with a lounge area,... More

Perfect taste of living in a cave. We were dropped by the taxi driver in a little alleyway. Then a little man from the hotel appeared and helped us with our luggage. We were led down this pebble alleyway which reminds me of GoT. There would be no chance for us to locate the hotel without anyone guiding us. The... More

We stayed here for two nights, and the accommodations were absolutely wonderful! They have converted a rock church into a hotel with loads of charm. Our room was beautiful. We had a few problems, however. First of all, the website does not tell you what to put in the GPS in order to find it. It's in a pedestrian only... More

We stayed in a small doubleroom (very good fare!) just before Christmas. As mentioned in other reviews, you need to use the ladder to go between the bedroom and the bathroom. It was not a big deal for us. We had a separate entrance from the main entrance and felt very private. The room was warm, quiet, and felt very... More
