Room was very spacious, well furnished and decorated. Enjoyed staying in such a historic treasure. Staff were very professional and helpful. Would stay again. Drop a pin on your location or it can be a challenge to find your way back to the room. The office is easy to find.
If you - like us - would like a room in a cave, this is an excellent experience in Matera. We got a room - or rather our own apartment - entirely in a cave and with an ancient cellarroom. Everything you needed was in the apartment, including breakfast with a lot of fruit. The apartment was a lot of stairs away from the reception, bur the staff was very helpful with the luggage. And all that for a moderate price. Unfortunately we had only booked 1 night. We could have stayed much longer and would love to come back.
We had booked two rooms. Our rooms were a little way from the reception - up the street - but a member of staff led us and took the cases. Thank goodness. Our room was on the first floor and was more like a suite. Entrance with kitchinette, table, drinks and breakfast food. Bedroom, Dressing room and shower room. The shower was quite small but everything worked. Our friend had an underground cave room, loved the experience but wouldn't want more than one night due to the damp. If you do a tour you will learn about the dampness in the caves of Matera.
The first surprise that greeted us when we first arrived at the hotel’s San Giorgio Matera reception office was that its location is quite far from the hotel's accommodation / hospitality rooms. Getting to the Office was also quite complicated and we needed a lot of guidance and explanations and thorough use of our car’s navigation system. We were greeted by the hotel manager who gave us a detailed explanation of the hotel, the city and all the conditions so that we could win the best conditions the hotel and the city of Matera have to offer. Because our rooms were not so close to the reception and we (unfortunately) only arrived for one night. In addition, getting to our rooms involves climbing "quite a few stairs", we were offered to leave our luggage in the luggage storage room which is part of the reception office, and take with us only the personal equipment and clothing we need for that day and night. Another problem facing us was the lack of parking for our rental car. The solution we were offered was to hire a driver to take the vehicle to a closed car park and return it at our request when we left the hotel. Great and recommended solution. After this long introduction, we finally (at last) came to the practical review of the room and the hotel. The rooms we received were a "STUNNIG SURPRISE" a beautifully furnished and decorated room, a great shower room and bathroom and a shower in the most modern design (you are invited to take a look at the photographs I have attached). Comfortable double bed and genuinely nice kitchenette with all the necessities for self-preparation breakfast. In short, Great, Great & Great !!! We had breakfast together for 2 couples on a small "balcony" that was adjacent to our rooms at the end of a small alley so we could breathe a great morning air in the heart of the ancient Matera district. Another surprise was the "SECRET DOOR" that was located in our friends’ room. This door led to "secret" passageways and cellars that are right in time for our visit with a huge renovation, a museum and probably a wine-producing winery that, according to the hotel manager, existed in antiquity. An amazing and interesting surprise. In this case, too, you can see the photographs I attached. Make a long story short, "Great hotel and highly recommended".…
The Hotel San Giorgio was a beautiful and comfortable stay - - - our room had a full kitchen and beautiful sitting areas, and the breakfast provided was amazing - - fruit, bread, cereal, yogurt, coffee, tea, etc. The staff was informative and kind. This was one of our favorite stays throughout a month in Italy! And the city of Matera is a must-see.
