Very pleasant stay in this small, friendly bed and breakfast. The breakfast, taken at the hotel across the road, has the most perfect view of Sassi and Matera. Possibly the best view in the whole town. The fresh figs were also very good. I thought Casalnuovo was good value for Italy and the staff were very friendly, organising airport transfers and recommending restaurants for dinner. The room was simple but very clean and comfortable. The bed linen and towels were a good quality. There was aircon - thank goodness as we were there in the heatwave. Parking on the street is free. It was ideal for us as we were looking for a reasonably priced small hotel in the old part of Matera, as a sightseeing base and we didn't need a wide range of amenities.
This hotel is in a quiet location a couple of km out of the centre of Matera. There is adequate parking outside on the road however the area has a look of being run down so you may not feel safe parking here. The rooms are modern and clean. The reception staff did not speak particularly good english but we could get by. Breakfast is served across the road in another hotel and was delicious.
For those who travel to Matare in southern Italy - you should avoid at all costs staying at the hotel Residence Del Casalnuovo. My wife and I booked two doubles rooms at the above-mentioned hotel for two nights as part of a trip with another couple at the beginning of July. The booking was done on hotels.com, which is owned by Expedia. Although we booked two double rooms for two couples, the receptionist - young, arrogant and impatient - could only offer us one double room and one single room. The following day we got to speak to the manager. She showed us on her computer screen an additional booking allegedly made by our friends for a single rather than a double room. No such booking was made by us and I have no idea how it ended being recorded on the hotel's computer. We explained to the manager that this booking could not have been made by us and that the only booking we did make was for two double rooms. We tried to solve the issue swiftly and pleasantly and offered her that we cover commission fee that, according to her, she had to pay back to Expedia. She agreed and said she would discuss it with her colleague, the same young arrogant receptionist from the previous night. That evening we came to see him and together we contacted Expedia who were not helpful at all and basically said it was for the hotel to decide what to do next. The end result was that the hotel charged us for the extra single room for two night - a room we never actually booked (in addition to the two double rooms we did book and needed). We couldn't help feeling it was their way to make a profit on a room that was unreserved. The receptionist was extremely rude and made us feel as if we were guilty of something. A few things visitors should take into account before booking this hotel: 1. Think twice - there are many other hotels in the area. 2. Take into consideration the possibility that the hotel manager makes up bookings so that they get pay for available rooms. 3. Despite the overall high rating the hotel has, it is a rather shabby and overpriced hotel with bad service and problematic rooms (noisy air conditioners that don't work properly). 4. Expedia represents the hotel only (their representative said so himself on the phone) and not the customers. 5. The price is more appropriate for a much more luxurious hotel.…
Comfortable, clean accommodation in a lovely location. We enjoyed our two night stay here. The staff were friendly offering maps and advice. Breakfast was at the hotel across the street and had a fantastic view from the small terrace.
We spent one night at the Residence Del Casalnuovo during our recent trip to Matera. The residence is a short walk away from the center of town and Sassi. Our room was on the smallish size but it was cute, comfortable and clean. It more than met our needs.
