We went to Matera by car arriving a Sunday evening. We ended up leaving the car in a public garage somewhat outside of the center. You pay when you leave - no tickets. A map might get you to the sasso, but you need to ask once there to find via Fiorentino. Ask in one of the shops where the... More

We spent a night as part of a pre booked week of cycling. Positives + good central location + friendly staff + a truly unique cave experience + nice big room Neutral - Not easy to find - Rocky stone stairs will make navigation difficult for older folk Negatives - Badly designed bathroom, almost impossible to avoid flooding the floor... It was a true cave experience in the middle of the Sassi. Our room was very comfortable, clean and spacious. We also had an upstairs lounge. WiFi was unavailable in the room but we sat outside our door, and we could get access. We were on the ground floor of the Sassi area surrounded by caves so be expected. We were... More

We enjoyed a night in a somewhat spare but comfortable and clean room with a wonderful view of i Sassi. Given the nature of the Sassi area anything more elaborate would be out of place The sassi area is used a settings for many movies that require a setting that resembles a biblical era Mediterranean city. It is truly unique... More

Wonderful experience staying in a cave room with beautiful view of the Sassi. Good breakfast with outside veranda. Easy to reach. Only the mosquito's bothered. Great place to stay. Sassi itself is a wonderful experience. Could not stop taking photo's

The Sassi Hotel has many rooms but you are here for the cave experience so go for it. Our cave room was very roomy although (understandably) the bathroom (and particular the shower cubicle) was a bit cramped. Our room was particularly large but as we turned up unannounced we agreed on a price and ended up with a "junior suite"... More

I stayed here in a tiny single, cell like room. Obviously its in a cave so i try not to be too judgemental but other singles in the group had much better rooms. The ac however really did not work and the first night i slept with a damp towel over me. The next two nights, Vivien on reception got... More

Sassi Hotel was located in a cave in the Sassi districts. At first finding the hotel from the train station proved difficult due to a lack of tourist maps in the area. This was not the hotels fault. However, the reception was welcoming and the room atmospheric and comfortable. One does not know what to expect in a cave room... More

Matera is an old town parts of which are built into the limestone cliffs and the hotel fits right in with that theme as it is a cave hotel. Only a few of the rooms are actually in the same location as the reception and the dining room with the rest of the rooms separate and spread around the town... More

Very interesting experience in a unique setting. We were travelling with a group, and the bus had to drop us a very long way away. Once you approach the hotel the paths become uneven and slippery. From reception, the rooms are scattered hither and thither, up and down uneven paths. Unfortunately, ours was quite a long way away. Being all... More
