Basiliani is a kind of hotel "disperso" that is each room is outside and not connected at all with lobby/entrance/breakfast room. In other world, if it rains one gets wet. If it snows, one has to walk in the snow to reach the reception.... A small lobby exist, too small to be used as such. Once this is clear, hotel...

Had a bit of trepidation about booking this hotel as it is 1) in a cave, 2) could not even get near it in a car. It turned out neither was a problem. We called the hotel as we approached Matera and they told us where to park the car on the outskirts of town and they were waiting for...

Matera has been on my bucket list for many years now and I finally made the trip in April 2017. And I am so glad about my decision to stay at Basiliani Hotel as it provided the perfect base to explore the Matera Sassi and it also gave my husband and I a very unique opportunity to stay in a...

Stayed two nights in the Cave Hotel during a motorcycle tour. Very unusual location in the oldest part of the old town. Converted cave into a hotel bedroom. Wow. Given the unique location I can forgive the fact that the cave rooms suffer from humidity and the white walls and ceilings are already staining brown and the metal fittings in...

We loved everything about the hotel (its location, space of the room and its cleanness, the variety of the breakfast buffet, the kindness of staff) however it was unpleasant to breath inside the room because of the moist.

We stayed here for one night. We are a family of four - our kids are 15 and 17. The rooms - converted from historic sassi cave houses - are stylish and very comfortable. Open plan but with two bathrooms and plenty of room. The hotel is right in the middle of the historic area so the setting is very...

It is actually difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed the visit to Matera and our stay at the Basiliani - everything was just perfect. The room, The breakfast, The Staff, The location - all absolutely perfect. The hotel is in the old part of town away from the main tourist areas and it was so quiet on...

This is definitely the place you wanna stay while in Matera. The hotel is located in the Sasso Caveoso neighborhood, and its spread across different unique caves, with shared reception and breakfast rooms. Each room is unique, with contemporary and stylish furnitures and amazing views of the Gravina and the old Matera just outside the entrance door. The breakfast buffet...

I stayed at the Basilicata Hotel in Matera as part of an Edelweiss Motorcycle Company tour of southern Italy last October. The hotel lobby and rooms are located in caves that are part of the Sassi area of old Matera. Since the rooms are constructed from individual caves, there are no connecting corridors between the lobby and the individual rooms...

We have been to Matera for a weekend and this Hotel was simply perfect for us. All attractions were walking distance from the Hotel and the breakfast was also very nice. The rooms were spacious and very clean with a view overlooking the valley.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The hotel is located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, Matera. There are eleven large rooms with independent access and all the modern technological comforts. They are partly built and partly caved out of the local tufa stone. They evoke the fascination of the prehistoric caves that you can see from the windows on the opposite Murgia plateau, site of the Archaelogical Park of Rupestrian Churches. ... more   less
