We stayed at San Giovanni Vecchio Residenza for one night during Corona times. The hotel is perfectly located for exploring amazing Matera - right in the middle of Matera Sasso Barisano yet away from the most crowded areas. The service is great and very personal - Cristina provided excellent information before and during the stay, as well as arranging a lovely aperitif on the rooftop terrace which has a nice view of the Doumo. The aperitif was serviced by a local restaurant Oi Mari, which also serves the breakfast - there was a perfect selection of break, pastries and all you need to start the day. The room had a mezzanine for the bed and was simple and good for a night's stay.
This was good accommodation for our one night stay in Matera. The hotel is centrally located and is within walking distance of all the main sites on interest. The arched room has a sleeping area on a mezzanine level and a lounge area below which also has a small kitchenette. The hotel benefits from a small terrace area.
Matera is unique and hard to describe or compare. It is beautiful everywhere and well preserved. A lively centre with museums, sites and also good restaurants and cafe’s. Hotel San Giovanni is in the very hart of this all. Beautiful rooms and good service. The staf is friendly, they want to give good service and are like a big family. The restaurant is excellent, one of the best in town ! The only downside was waking every early morning because of people dragging their suitecases down the streets and stairs... but I guess that is happening everywhere unfortunitally these days. We had a bonus because James Bond was filming his newest film here !
We stayed in the Acqua Suite during our visit to Matera, as it was a unique option to sleep in a 'cave'. We actually had a bed in an old water cistern, super interesting. The downside was that these rooms (apparently it's similar in all of Matera), are super humid. They have a dehumidifier going constantly, but it's still not very comfortable - waking up sticky, like you've been camping. This particular room as well is only for those who are quite short and mobile, 6 or so steep steps down from outside, then 4 more down one way for the bed, from there, 4 up and 4 down again for the couch/washroom/kitchen. My husband is 6 feet tall, and hit his head/elbows about a dozen times. It was an adventure, but sadly wouldn't do it again. Breakfast was included which was at a restaurant across the street, food was enough, but no eggs etc, and no one offered coffee/tea/cappucino etc. The check-in was wonderful, the gentleman at the desk gave us a map, and lots of very useful information! …
The hotel was centrally located in the center of town and had a lot of good features...Nice rooftop terrace for enjoying the sights of Matera... Rooms were a good size and nice extras like a kitchen and living room with a sleeper sofa..The only knock was that the rooms had loft bedrooms with no other features in the lofts except the beds... Breakfast was included and was across the road at a nice restaurant. it was well presented and was had many items to pick from..Francesco the hotel host was informative and helpful..
