Difficult to get to when driving and parking difficult, we used the valet parking option at 15 euros a day they will take the car away and bring it back when you leave. Difficult to take the heavy luggage up the steps from the property from the Panoramic Road. Apart from that a stunning place to stay in a modernised cave for a few days and explore the excellent Sassi region of Matera.

My husband and 2 adult children stayed in the family cave room (room 5) and were very comfortable in our cave with 3 distinctive sleeping areas partitioned by a curtain, a bathroom and an extra shower room, kitchen area and table seating along with WiFi with a quicker broadband speed than I get in my home in the UK! As someone who cannot start the day without a cup of tea, I was very pleased to find a kettle and crockery in the kitchen area. The only thing missing was some glasses for wine/water but we were able to borrow some from Reception. We received a very warm welcome from our hosts and the location is excellent and centred around a charming courtyard. Various breads, sweet pastries and cakes, cheese, ham, cereal, fruit, yogurt etc provided for breakfast. We took advantage of the portering service so that we did not have to carry our bags up the cobbled stairways to the accommodation. The procedure was a little confusing so to help future travellers, my advice would be to contact the hotel a day in advance to let them know your expected arrival time and give them your car registration number. Follow their map instructions to the meeting point called Porta Pistola (we couldn’t see any signs advertising this name and there are a few parking areas along that road so follow the map carefully to stop at the correct one). You then need to give Reception a call and they send someone down. You can then follow the porter to Reception to complete check in before returning to move your car to a car park outside of the Sassi. Confirm with Reception what time you require the porter on check out day. They do also offer a car parking valet service if preferred. We very much enjoyed staying at Le Dodici Lune and would happily return.

We(7 people and 2dogs) stayed in this beautiful hotel. But the staff made our stay awesome. We could not have been made more welcome even with our bull terriers. We arrived later than intended and were still offered drinks and some food.

As you turn the corner and see the sassi for the first time, you are literally transported back in time. After a quick trip up only a couple of levels of stairs, you meet Marie Theresa and claim you own temporary residence in this special place. The rooms are lovely. The restaurant/bar wasn't open, but there were plenty of options within a short walk. This is a once in a lifetime experience.

I seriously recommend Le Dodici Lune Residence... This is the best area in the old town to stay as it's in the cave area near the abandoned grottos which are easy to explore from the hotel The place itself is a charming hotel that was converted in early 2000 from a family home, the rooms are surrounding a central courtyard which is lovely itself and the rooms all face into it... There are 3 levels of rooms. I was upgraded to the double room as I booked the single! Breakfast included - this is a great thing as it can be hard to find a place nearby open to eat - great coffee, pastries and crossaints, cereal, jams and all with a smile on their face :) The rooms are so nice warm and cosy and best part is that it's dark when you sleep so it really feels like you are in a cave! Also nicely and cleanly decorated Towels, Shampoo, hairdryer, fridge, water in the fridge and coffee / teas - all basics included I had bought a bottle of wine and not a bottle opener, the owners were so nice to me that they exchanged my bottle of wine for a much better one! They looked after me so well and we so nice! I highly recommend these lovely people and their hotel :)
