Note in locating this hostel- no.10 is on the door frame, after pushing the bell for level 3, if you walk up the stairs/ take the elevator, the entrance to the hostel on level 3 has a yellow sign showing 'CCTV working' outside the hostel door. The receptionists only speak Spanish but they still try their best to communicate with... More

I stayed here for 5 nights when visiting Madrid. The rooms were pleasant and clean and with air-conditioning. The owner was very welcoming and had lots of good advice about what to visit. It is only a few minutes' walk from the Palacio Real. The Plaza Mayor and La Puerta Del Sol. I had a really good stay.

After having booked my room, the owner just told me that the booking has been cancelled - I didn't receive any emails to notice me of the situation previously! The same situation happened to another woman waiting just next to me. The owner wasn't able to speak english at all, I was lucky enough to understand a bit of Spanish.... More

I stayed in Hostal Luz for 4 nights with a friend at the end of April 2016. The location is fantastic although the city centre is so small that any place between the Royal Palace and the Retiro park is good for a short stay. The staff was very nice, it was quiet and overall worth the little money we... More

The owner lady was absolutely awful, she did not let us leave our luggage there beyond 6pm when our train was leaving at 10pm. We obviously understand that she can't let us stay there beyond checkout, but this was unreasonable. Also, she did not speak a bit of english! We had to use google translate. So she was unhelpful in... More

No, No, No...DO NOT STAY HERE....This is probably the worst hostel I've ever been to. I'm not sure where these positive reviews are coming from. The pictures are nothing like the place. I've never been more uncomfortable in a place before. In this place you literally get a little room in a house and the owners are extremely unfriendly and... More

Stayed here from Thursday to Monday. The location was superb and, despite warnings, easy to locate. Staff were efficient añd friendly and our room clean and quiet. Great bathroom, hot, easy to use shower. Room cleaned and towels changed every day, fridge and safe in room. Highly recommended - 3 minutes from Puerta del Sol in one direction, Palacio Real... if you're looking for a decent yet not breaking-the-bank place to stay in Madrid, then this is it! lovely, comfortable, clean rooms. great location! Main two disadvantages though, the front desk person did not spoke English and don't bother getting the breakfast deal. The unit doen't have a restaurant so you get vouchers for a coffee place near by, 1... More

This is not your typical Hostal, its like paying the price of a hostal, but you get your own room in a home. Very very clean, both rooms and washrooms. It was so quiet when I was there that I never ran into anyone. Never waited to use bathroom or shower. The owner was great, giving out a map of... More

It is rare that I rate something as Excellent, so I will qualify my rating a bit. It is excellent for what it is. It is a budget accommodation that is clean, quiet, safe, and affordable. And, it has many pluses. The pluses include its location, wifi, direct access to the owner, and breakfast. I have stayed here 3 times... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
