We are visiting Madrid several times a year (taking there are no lockdowns). And we love Salamanca district. Of course throughout the years we worked-out a couple of options where to stay in, but after staying in an hotel of Hospes group in Caceres and being relatively satisfied, we decided to give Hospes Puerta de Alcala a try having to spend a night in Madrid on the way to South America. OK, looked with our eyes, its location is perfect: Calle de Serrano is 100 meters away and all our favourite restaurants are within minutes of walking distance. We were a bit doubtful about possible noise in the room (this is a general problem of about any hotel located in a city center and Plaza de Independencia, where Puerta de Alcala giving the hotel its name is, is indeed a very busy place with a lot of traffic nearly 24 hours. But after making a reservation, I contacted the hotel and after a couple of mails with Reception Chef Leticia, we agreed that we will be allocated a Superior room overlooking a well-like courtyard. And indeed there was no single sound coming into the room from the outside. Ok, the room turned out to be very adequate for this room category and a hotel located in the center of Madrid. And in general – no it isn’t cheap - but it is priced more reasonable than other 5-star places in the area we are familiar with. 2 notes about the room though: - after roughly 30 years of active traveling, I must have seen hundreds of different types of showers. Here was the first one (that I remember) where I had to give-up, dress back again and call the reception for help. At first everything looks very standard: 3 knobs. One is for ceiling shower, another – for one with a flexible tube, thus third one must be for regulating the temperature. Piece of cake. Except no matter which direction I was turning this knob and waiting how long, only cold water was coming out. When a receptionist arrived, he explained me that I have to turn this know “very, very slowly” to get the thing to understand that I want the water to get hotter. OK, this isn’t serious for a 5-star hotel, having a good hardware apart of that. Or, after all, make an instruction and put it onto the shower wall. - The bathroom is an open concept located behind the wall the bed is standing near to. There are no doors and one can get into the bathroom from either side of the bed. But the bathroom is on a bit higher level than the bedroom and, thus, there is step of about 20 cm. On both sides of the bed there are 2 lights built in into this step, which are always on during the night. We tried each and every switch, but none of them could kill these lights. So, basically, the room is never really dark during the night. I don’t sleep too well with lights on. I get the idea of these lights, of course, they help the guests not to fall over the step on the way to the bathroom during the night. But can I have a choice whether to have these lights on? Or just be able to switch them on, when they are needed aka on the way to the bathroom and then to be able to switch them off again when back to bed? And then, yes, I can’t really recall when it was last time that a 5-star hotel located in a city like Madrid didn’t have a pillows menu, but only 2 “standard types” of pillows. Both the reception and restaurant stuff are very helpful and service-minded, this I have to give credit for. But now what has spoiled a bit general impression, which was positive till then (shower and lights are minor things). At 09:00 a.m. the door of the opposite room did “Bang!”. Then “Bang!”, ”Bang, bang!”, “BAAA-bang!!!”. This is a cleaning lady came to make it up. Well, I assume the stuff of a 5-star hotel should be taught to try not to make that much of so-easy-avoidable noise. We had a long haul flight in the afternoon in front of us and were willing to sleep in and rest. And then there is a simple and cheap triangular thing that one can put under the door to keep it open while the room cleaning takes place, so it isn’t necessary to open and close (and bang) the door every time cleaning person needs to go to a trolley placed outside the room. At the same time it will be possible to see, both for guests and occasional management supervision, what goes on inside the room and, for example, whether the cleaning personnel wears masks. Which she wasn’t, when after a 10th bang I went out after all to ask her whether it is really necessary to make that much noise. Couple of hours later, when on the way to lunch we met the same lady coming out of the elevator – and not wearing a mask again. And this isn’t a funny working shower, this is serious with Spain and Madrid (just like many other countries and cities) beating whole pandemic records of new daily cases every day. You arrive to a 5-star hotel, you go into your room, you finally take-off your mask in relief – and what can you get?

I stayed in this hotel a month ago and loved it but am considering never coming back now! Firstly, I was left with *severe back pain* after the 'massage' (back pain that wasn't there, just before the massage, which was also done by someone with little experience or technique); my room still hadn't been cleaned by 3.30 pm and I had to ring them repeatedly to ask them do it, and I was met with indifference bordering on rudeness by the men on reception. (A big shout-out to the restaurant staff, though, who were lovely and who went out of their way to find me a hot-water bottle for the pain inflicted on me by the massage 'therapist!) NOT up to the standards of service a 4 star hotel at all - more like a two star.

Smart Hotel in a very central location and next to the park. Lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. Easy to explore the lovely city of Madrid. The beds were extremely comfortable and the staff were all friendly. The outdoor restaurants just outside the hotel overlooking Alcala Gate are worth a visit even if just for a drink and soak up the atmosphere.
