The place was lovely and cosy and the employees were so helpful and friendly. Big shout out to Javier for being so welcoming and giving us loads of suggestions as to where to go in Madrid. Definitely recommend coming here as not only was it a convenient location in the city, but the environment of the place was safe and comfortable.

We stayed at the Artrip for 3 nights in January as part of a larger trip throughout Spain. Our trip took us to some 3-star and 4-star hotels, and one 2-star hotel: The Artrip in Madrid.

We both thought the Artrip was by far the nicest, coolest, and most comfortable hotel we stayed in throughout our trip in Spain.

The Room:
We booked a standard room. What we got was a large (by Euro standards) room at the front of the hotel with a beautiful terrace window with full length shutters. The room was very white, but the bed, accents, and hanging lights gave it a trendy, rather than sterile feel. The architecture of the room was great, as you stepped into a sort of foyer in which the shower was its own sort of indent on the right, the toilet was in a small cupboard on the left, and the vanity and desk were on the other two walls. It was a strange layout, but we loved it as it made the room feel massive where if it was a closed off contained bathroom it would have been a little claustrophobic. The shower had great heat and water pressure, and was positioned very high (great for tall people).

The Bed:
The bed was on the firm side (as most European hotels were), but it gave us a very comfortable few nights' sleep. There were a few marks/stains on the bedsheets, but they were hardly noticeable and probably more a product of the fact that they chose stark white as their linen.

The Hotel:
The Hotel offered a small continental breakfast which was very well priced by my memory, although I did not partake so I can't pass judgment. What I did like was that they had a coffee machine (the type you would find in an airline lounge) which made you free cappuccinos whenever you like. The staff were absolutely lovely and really went out of their way to make people feel at home at the hotel. It seemed like potentially they also rented bikes, although I didn't enquire.

The Area:
The hotel is located in an area of Madrid called Lavapies. Apparently the area used to have a reputation as being a little rough. You certainly weren't in danger of running into a Louis Vuitton, but we really liked the neighbourhood. The food options a few blocks up the hotel were great (Casa Gonzales especially!) and it had a great, non-touristy feel. We're big walkers, and it did take probably around 20 - 30 min to walk to some of the big Madrid attractions, but the hotel is right next to a train station which could get you there in less than 5 minutes. The hotel is really close to the Reina Sofia, which was an absolutely brilliant museum.

The Downside:
The only downside I could think of was the parking situation near the hotel was quite dire. The lot closest to the hotel charged quite a bit (I think around EUR 25) which added up. That's the only thing I can think of to mark against the hotel.

Ultimately, the main think we took away from our stay was a general feeling of shock that this hotel only merited 2 stars. It was far and away a more pleasant stay than the 4-star hotels we stayed at anywhere else, and I can't recommend it enough.

There are many things to love about this hotel, but there are some things to hate. First the love - the staff is incredibly helpful, the hotel decor is unique and appealing, the room (we were upgraded to a suite) was spacious and the beds were comfortable. Now the hate - not the best location - we had a bit of hike to the popular areas (Plaza Mayor), not close to busy restaurants, and surrounded by closed shopfronts. The bathroom situation - other reviewers have commented on the "privacy issue" and it is a big one - with frosted glass and walls that don't form complete seals with each other, you can see and hear everything that is happening. Plus, in an effort to make the place feel modern and spa-like, they have used wooden slats in the shower, but this is a big error. The shower area reeks of mold. They should consider replacing the wood with tiles.
I think this would be a good choice for people whose main interest is the museums, but I would never choose to stay here again.

Dear Guest, Firstable thank you so much for your review on Tripadvisor and for your nice words about our service. Always we can improve from your feedback. This is what I like of Tripadvisor, all the guests can write their personal and different opinions about the stay in a hotel. I´m not agree in some things you´ve wrote, but I can understand that your taste is to other kind of hotels, perhaps Artrip is a little bit modern and risky to you. In the first two years from open I ´ve slept many times in my hotel, and I ´ve never seen reeks of mold at the area showers. Best regards, Miguel Ángel Porras García

I changed my reservation from Hotel Preciados to the Artrip after reading reviews on TripAdvisor. My reservation was for 2 nights, but I checked out early and went back to the Hotel Preciados.

This hotel is lovely. The rooms are clean. The hotel clerks are very nice.

What I didn't like is that they store people's luggage (a nice free service) in the common area where anyone could take off with it. The lobby entrance is locked. When I first checked in, my room was not ready so I dropped my bags and headed for the Prado. When I returned, I had to wait a good 10 minutes before anyone buzzed me in. That was frustrating.

The location is not as nice. They are a close walk to the Regina Sofia, but quite a walk to the Prado, or Plaza Mayor. I travel Europe by myself frequently, and this is one of the only times where I did not feel safe walking around the area, especially at night. Lots of men approaching me, and things that made me uncomfortable on my walk to and from the Plaza Mayor area. Also, I couldn't find a single restaurant where anyone spoke English (even the restaurant they recommended). I finally went to the grocery store where I could make a purchase. Very frustrating.

If you are with others, maybe you won't mind the location. But I am so glad that this is not the first place I ever stayed in Madrid, because I would not have fallen in love with the city the way I did when I stayed at the Hotel Preciados.

Dear Guest, First of all, thank you for your review on tripadvisor, me and my team think that it´s very important the feedback´s guests, having direct information to improve our work in the hotel everyday. I apologize if you had to wait some time before you get the room, because the house keeping team were cleaning the rooms, usually in the mornings we need to clean when the guests left the rooms, after 12,00. Probably we were fully booked and a lot of work to do and we ´ve only 17 rooms, this is a boutique small hotel. We give the rooms as soon as we can everyday side we opened. About the location, into the town center of Madrid, can understand it´s a multicultural, multi-ethnical, bohemian and working class neighborhood. There are no tourists, there are students, artists, immigrants and spanish workers citizens. But believe me, it is a true safe area. I ´ve opened this hotel since a year and a half, and after 20.000 guests sleeping here, until now never happened nothing in Lavapiés neighborhood. We are very proud that during all the last 2013 year, this hotel has been at the "first position" in Madrid on Tripadvisor (after 380 different reviews). Sorry for your experience anyway, and best kind regards. Miguel Ángel Porras García

We stayed at the Artrip for only one night in early July 13 having booked originally for 3.
As we live in a very quiet area at home, we are quite sensitive to noise at night. If you are of this ilk I suggest you either look into a room away from the street or at another hotel.
The staff were quite apologetic and did not insist on cancellation fees etc. They were just a little perplexed as to why we didn't love their hotel as it would appear that no one had ever complained about noise. This may or may not be the case but the staff were quite nice about us shortening our stay. The rooms themselves are quite comfortable with a lot of money seemingly spent on good quality fittings etc. I would also agree with some previous reviewers re the shower....it is wonderful. I just don't know if this hotel is justifiably no1 choice hotel in Madrid.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. I always think that everybody can learn with the reviews to improve. Thank you also for your good comments about the staff and the shower, it is true, both are amazing. Me and my family opened 13 months ago this hotel, and after 13.000 guests sleeping here until now, nobody complained about the noise, nobody, in fact some of them celebrated in some comments about our really "quite" hotel. We did with the architect a very good work one year ago for soundproofing, with the best materials, 2 double specials windows, 2 wood doors at the balconies, and everything in a quite street. And if you have any doubt of our first position on Tripadvisor, please read all the comments and try (free) again, I will invite you. Thanks anyway for choosing us, Sincerely yours, Miguel Ángel Porras

Just left the hotel. We stayed for three nights. Even before I arrived, I knew it was special. I called the hotel from the airport to find out how far it was and how much I should expect to pay the taxi and apparently reached the owner who was not on the premises. He told me the price and told me he would call the front desk to make sure they had a room ready since we were arriving before check in time. Everyone was extremely courteous. The breakfast was wonderful. The central location was great, just half a block from a metro station. My companion, a chef, raved about the fresh tomato spread with the breakfast. I flew over 165,000 miles last year and there are some weeks that I am in 4 hotels in 7 days. Some are 5 star and some are one star. The service here was just wonderful and I was really pleased. Small touches from staff who really care are noticeable to a road warrior like me. I was very happy and would stay here again. Free wifi and a a great shower mean a lot to me. The entire staff went out of their way to accommodate everything we needed.

Reached Madrid By Train from Seville. Madrid railway station was nothing less spectacular than an Airport, huge, clean, beautiful and Streamlined.
Though the hotel is less than a Kilometer from the station, we had to take a cab as we had luggage including a suitcase.

The cab dropped us outside the hotel. It is a small Boutique hotel but very stylishly and intelligently done.

We Chose the Hotel after reading reviews on tripadvisor .
Sara at reception opened the card accessed Main Door from Inside.
We reached the property at 12:30 and were given the room straightaway .

Miguel the owner also came after some time and gave us a brief history of His Three Years Old Hotel , e.g. it is carved out of a 115 years old building and to convert it into a Modern Hotel , they had to start from scratch but were able to save many original features like Brick walls on the ground floor and wooden banisters and stairs.

We had booked a junior Suite as it was bigger. Having Stayed in a very small room in Paris has scarred us for the life ☺, so we are always looking for a decent size of room .
The Design and room layout is such that the Bathroom and the Bed room flow into each other.
The room does not have a view. It has a window , which opens into the central Shaft. Which was clean, but not what we wanted to see.
There is access Card to Open the Main Door, Door to the stairs, lift and The Bedroom.
Air conditioner does not start automatically when we put the key in it’s slot to switch On the Lights.

The Pillow was too small and despite our request they could not provide me with a better pillow. Thus hampering our sleep . I suspect that despite the owner being a professional hotelier, he deliberately did not look into our request . :-(

The Room had Two Fresh Apples in a Bowl. The room also had a Tea Maker along with 2 bottles of water .
There was an Open cupboard , a Locker and a Big TV Hanging from the Ceiling.
The Room and the Hotel was Very Clean .

There was no toothpaste and brush in the room, which they got for us from the market.
The Towels were Very Thin and were not of Good Quality .
Shower was high pressure

The small dining area offers Free Coffee all day and at 5:00 Pm they offer a range of premium and flavored Teas along with cookies. Nice Touch .
The Breakfast was Simple and included : 3 types of juices. Bread, Cold cuts, Cheese, Spanish omelets, Tea coffee, bread, jam and butter

Would also like to mention about Yasmina on reception and Lovely Breakfast girl Daniala

In the Lobby there are Paintings for sale, which they change every month

There was Laundry opposite the hotel, which we used .

Though the Hotel is within 1.5 Km from the City center and near to the Metro station Lavapies. But the walk to the Center is not very comfortable as the shortcut walking area passes through some low scale neighbourhoods.

The Hotel is wonderful but I Cannot say the same about the area.
