Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

We stayed in this little gem of a hotel for a couple of days after Christmas when visiting family. Its beautifully restored with traditional features but ultra modern facilities. I stay in many hotels at home and abroad, some quite luxurious, but I would choose this hotel for a city centre stay every time. It is small, intimate and friendly, so close to all of central Madrid's tourist attractions, but a haven of peace and comfort at the end of a day.

The hotel was in an area of smaller streets south of the City centre, with a good range of bars and restaurants nearby; and an easy walk from the art galleries. Our room was spacious, quiet and comfortable with modern fittings. Thoroughly recommended.

My wife and I spent a really nice weekend in Artrip. The hotel is a restored house bought by the owner’s grandmother in the 1950’s although it has the most modern of features. It’s about 100 metres from the Metro and has lots of restaurants nearby. The staff are very helpful and friendly none more so than the owner Miguel, who is a mine of information and so willing and eager to be of help. There is a quiet passion and attention to detail about how everything is done, and there are great deals. You are in the heart of Madrid’s cultural area. We’ll be back.
