Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

Perfectly situated to all the museums and important sites in Madrid. The room was lovely, and the staff was extremely helpful. Definitely a 4 star hotel in a 2 star body. We will be staying there again in the future.

My husband and I were here for 3 nights in April. The room was bright and beautiful. I liked the street outlook from the terrace. And it was quiet. Jasmina and Marta were extremely helpful with getting around info. And the two restaurants they recommended had delicious food.

Reasonable location, a 10-15 minute walk (or one stop on the metro) to Mayor Plaza (uphill!), in an area with plenty of bars/restaurants and a 24 hour supermarket a few minutes walk away. The property is modern and very clean. Self service/buffet breakfast was good, a relatively small choice, but more than adequate and good coffee. Staff very friendly, including the owner who went out of his way to say “hello”. The only negatives I had were that our room had no exterior windows, opening into a light well, so no/very limited natural light and the glass wall between the bathroom and bedroom looks impressive but is impractical - the bedroom gets lit up every time the bathroom light is put on.

The Artrip is a lovely small hotel a ten minute walk from the main Madrid train station (Puerto de Atocha). There is an express bus from the airport that drops you at the station or you may arrive there by train. The area is much nicer than you may find at other major cities train stations, a good mixture of commercial and residential. You are around the corner from the major modern art museum (Reina Sofia) and a short metro ride from the city center. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. We had an attic room which was a bit quirky given the slope of the roof, but the space was wonderfully well designed. The elevator was modern and took us quickly and quietly to the 6th floor. The rate was quite reasonable for the location and time of year. The owner greeted us and made us
