Hostal Chelo is a good budget option if you are looking for a clean, safe room steps from the Gran Via and central attractions. Maria and her team are gracious hosts and keep the rooms neat and clean. WiFi is free and fast.
This hostel is based in the Chueca district which we found out was in the gay area. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars but the area itself is rather scruffy and I have never seen so much graffiti. We had a twin bedroom...More
On entering Chelo, I was greeted by a three floor climb in 100 degree heat, which I did, only to realise there was indeed a lift! My one bit of advice is to look past there stairs at what looks like a door way, it...More
We took two rooms at the chelo for our family of four. Rooms were clean and service was efficient and discrete (the managers live in the hostel as well I believe). Central location and being on the third floor was surprisingly quiet. 20-30 mins walk...More

Chueca is the hip, gay neighborhood of Madrid where many of the streets are narrow and intimate, but where the hustle and bustle and the eclectic storefronts and people give it a distinctly urban feel. The main thoroughfare is Calle Hortaleza and the main square is Plaza Chueca, completely filled with terraza tables serving copas (mixed drinks) during summer. A mixture of trendy and grungy, some of the adult businesses
here are explicitly racy in their signage. From the rainbow flags to the signs above the entrances of its many funky bars, to the date spot restaurants, Chueca is a vibrant and colorful place. It's always interesting to explore the different corners of Chueca by day, and by night, the area becomes a major nightlife destination when the clubs open their doors.

Hi, it's been a while. My room was one small bed and an attached small bathroom. toward the back of the facility. It was adequate for my clothing needs (one small suitcase), but if you need extras, I'm sure the people who run the place can find you enough hangers to use. They were very nice and accommodating.
