The Hostal is a great value both in location and the spotless and nicely appointed rooms. The only downside is having to leave your room key and having to buzz the front door to be let in. The staff was extremely helpful and kind. The hotel is almost right next to the Reina Sophia and blocks from the Prado. All...

A very good relation quality/price, a very good location but is a simple and limited experience of lodging. It's ok if you want a centric and clean lodge in Madrid. That's all! Take care if you go by car because is strongly difficult and expensive to park in this area.

I think we´ve stayed at the Barrera a gazillion times (every time we go to Madrid, we stay there), and every time we leave happy. Centrally located on c/ Atocha - it´s an easy walk from the train station - you find yourself in between Lavapies and Huertas with easy access to great bars. You´re probably a 10-minute walk to...

I love the Hostal Barrera! I stayed there for the third time for 2 days last week. I have traveled by myself, and I've always felt very safe and comfortable at this lovely place---which I like to describe as a guesthouse. I think some people may be confused about the term hostal, thinking it is a place for backpackers (a...

This hotel was very well located near the train station and within walking distance of the Old Madrid city centre. It had lovely staff, and was very clean. However the room was small with basic facilities and very noisy. We were unfortunate enough to have the room near reception and I was woken up constantly even though normally a heavy...

Excellent people at the desk all 24 hrs, very helpful, nice little rooms and very close to atocha railway station, the shower area is tiny so not advised for a large person. On a longer trip another location more central to the main tourist areas may be recommended but this worked great for our short trip close to the museum...

Stayed here for 3 nights and booked a double room with washroom inside. Very nice room and tidy. Staff is very nice. they will clean the room and replace the towel everyday, which is quite unexpected for its price per night... Location is fair, it is located 15mins away from Atocha station... And there is an upslope to the hostel.

Staying in Lavapies

Neighborhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighborhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighborhood.
