Javier looked after us like we were family. He directed us to a breakfast spot that became a daily visit, several delicious evening dining spots and suggested local wines. He never seemed to tire of what must have been really mundane questions. Gracias!

We've just stayed three nights in Hostal Gonzalo, located in a road only a few minutes' walk from the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. The hostal is on the third floor of a building, reached by an antique but completely adequate lift, and is entirely modern inside. Our room was not grand, but large enough and reasonably priced for the... More

This is a family run hotel well situated for the Prado, Retiro Park and many good locally used bars and cafes. 5 minute walk from Plaza Mayor. And 10 -15 minutes from Atocha station. It is on the third floor of the building and was meticulously clean. Property of character, beautiful wooden stairs but a working lift is available. The... More

This is an excellent hostal for anyone looking for a great value, clean, friendly place to stay in Madrid. The owner, Javier, takes great pleasure in ensuring his guests are ok and have everything they need. The rooms are small, but spotlessly clean, and although we overlooked the street, we didn't notice any noise. We were disturbed one night by... More

When you read overwhelmingly positive reviews you wonder. Let me add my excellent review. I found Hostal Gonzalo on Rick Steves. The location is terrific. The cost is unbelievable. If you can live with some problems I will detail, this is your place. Hostal Gonzalo is two blocks from the Prado, three blocks from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, 15-minute walk from... More

Had a wonderful stay at this clean and central hotel in Madrid. It's location is perfect for discovering. Madrid's tapas, bars and museums on foot. There is a lift, the hosts are friendly and helpful and the water pressure and facilities are great. Host Javier was extremely helpful with my travel plans and tips to get to the airport etc.... I'm a little delayed in writing this review but wanted to give Hostal Gonzalo a review. It was back in February 2015 when I stayed there and loved it. This was the first place I stayed on a 9 week visit to Spain. I was looking for a good location in the old city, reasonably priced, and clean. I got... More

This is an excellent budget hotel to stay in Madrid. It is comfortable and spotlessly clean, and run by friendly, helpful owners. Having said that, the rooms are fairly basic and small, so don't expect the Ritz! The location is particularly good although nothing is very far in Spain's compact capital. However, the hotel is in a fairly quiet street... More

The room was a reasonable size and spotless. The location was good for us as we needed to stay close to the railroad station. There were several good restaurants nearby and the proprietor, Javier, was very nice, and recommended a restaurant for us to try pulpo (octopus.). It was good. We got in to see the Prado for free on... More

The Hostal is small spotless & centrally located on the 3rd floor (with elevator) of a building in museum district of Madrid. The best thing about it are the hosts - Javier & Antonio who were very welcoming helpful & friendly. The location is perfect - 5/10 mins walk to the 3 major museums - Prado, Reina Sofia & Thyssen,... Staying in Huertas

Neighborhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
