Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

I can strongly recommend the Artistic -- friendly, welcoming, and helpful hosts (who also speak English); a nice continental breakfast in the morning, and a superb location in the "Literary Neighborhood" (Barrio de Letras). You'll be just a short walk from Plaza Santa Ana, a major center of the night-time cafe and tapas-bar scene. My room was clean and comfortable, and at least large enough so that I did not feel cramped -- if you've travelled solo in Spain, you'll appreciate what I mean. And yes, with its colorful decor, you could even call the room a bit "artistic"! It is, of course, what it is, a B&B -- this won't be your choice if you need a big, "full-service" hotel with grand lobby, bar, pool, etc. -- but unless you are visiting Europe for the first time you probably know this already. But as a B&B this is a fine choice -- of the three small B&B-type hotels I have experienced in central Madrid so far, the Artistic is by far the best. Two things it doesn't have -- an elevator, and a prominent sign outside. Outside, there is only a small plaque beside their main door, which is easy to miss. Now perhaps there are iPhone applications that will sound off as you approach your destination, but if like me you do things the old-fashioned way, then as you walk down Lope de Vega street you will probably want to look for the deep-burgundy Franjul sign (a shoe store, I think) -- the Artistic will be next door. Note too that the Artistic is not far from where Lope de Vega street ends at Leon street. (And incidentally, there is a coin-operated laundromat on Leon, just a short walk from the Artistic.)

Artistic B&B is an excellent base for central Madrid. Quiet, comfortable and spotlessly clean. A friendly welcome and lots of good local advice for places to visit and eat. We shall certainly stay there again when we return to Madrid. R&D. Scotland

Fantastic B&B. As with all other reviews on this site we found this B&B to be great value and perfectly situated. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel warmly welcomed. Communication is fantastic and we wanted for nothing. Breakfast included and was plentiful. ( coffee, tea, cereal, yoghurt, cheese toasties, cake, toast and ham and cheese etc etc, I cannot fault the amount offered and the warmth shown by May our breakfast host. She is so lovely and warm and friendly ( Muchos Gracias ) Nothing was too much too ask. Rooms are Cosy, room 5 ( ours was sooo warm) in winter. Bathroom is small, however you pay for what you get! Air conditioning if you want, tv, many many power points! Comfy beds too! We have stayed in many B&B’s around the world and this rates in the top 5. Again, we will remind everyone, they do not have a elevator and have 3 flights of stairs to climb, so if you wish to stay here, travel light. Alvaro our host did help us with our bags and He is hoping to put an elevator in the future.

Stayed May 2019 over weekend. Extremely well located B&B in central Madrid. Occupies 3rd floor of old building in the old town. The building entrance is a bit down at heel, ditto stairwell, and steep! So beware travellers with lots of luggage... Bedrooms are high on atmosphere, nice idiosyncratic decor, but a little cramped. Bathroom v small, although adequate. Teeny dining area which requires intimate connection with other guests! Hosts are super helpful and charming. No street noise. Very very convenient location in cool old town. Museums etc walkable. Suit relaxed travellers.

Stayed for 3 nights in October 2019. Room was quite large and very clean. New owner had just taken over the place and greeted us upon arrival. He took the time to make recommendations about Madrid and was very friendly and hospitable during our stay. Breakfast was plentiful and a good chance to interact with other guests staying at the hotel. Excellent location for exploring Madrid and we were spoilt for choice with great local restaurants and cafes nearby. Would definitely recommend this place if you’re in Madrid.
