Hostal la Macarena is perfectly situated on a side street close to the Mayor Plaza, and the port of Sol- in what seems to be the beating heart of Madrid: On the weekend the Plaza had a festival atmosphere- street performances, and lots of happy people. All you had to do was walk some steps from the hotel and join... More

A lovely hostal in a great location. Rooms are small but have everything you need, staff are lovely and the location brilliant. It will pass the mother inspection too! I plan to take my 70 y.o mother with me next time my husband & I visit Madrid and stay at Hostal Macarena.

The best things about the Hostal La Macarena were the location and the staff. Located just behind the Plaza Mayor, the hotel is within easy walking distance to the Puerta del Sol, the Palacio Real, and many fine restaurants and shops. It is also a long walk or short metro ride to the Prado. The staff is wonderful. They helped... More

Though the staff does not speak much English, I managed to book this over the phone, and in person they were very tolerant of my terrible Spanish. The hotel is in a great location just down the stairs from Plaza Mayor. Our room was decent enough with two double beds that we pushed together, cable TV, and a private bathroom.... More

Let me start with positive. The location of the hotel is simply superb. It is literary steps away from Plaza de Mayor, Calle de Mayor, and within short walking distance to Plaza de Real and Puerta del Sol. It is surrounded by great eateries for any possible taste and price range. The price of the hostal is very reasonable, by... More

As professionals from the States we travel a lot but la Macarena was the worst hotel experience in our life. We stayed only for one night and the next morning at 6:30 a.m. we had to take a plane to a conference in Cairo. We contacted the hotel from the States making sure they can provide us with a taxi.... Room for three (triple) was so small that hardly can accommodate one person. We changed the room for double –it was twice bigger then triple, but had a funky smell from the bathroom. I left my face cream in the bathroom, concierge denied she ever seen it. If you are on the budget you can find nicer, bigger and chipper... More

We stayed here for two nights, Nov 9 & 10. The location was great and the rooms were clean. The staff was nice. The rooms were VERY small to the point that we had to walk over the bed due to our suitcases. The bed was pretty comfortable. I am not sure that I would stay here again but I... More

Really nice place, pretty simple but really clean, most of the rooms have balconies with beautiful views onto the street. Excellent location, right in the middle of things, and lots to see and do all around. Watch out because there's no air con though - in October it was lovely but in summer I imagine it gets pretty stuffy. The... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
