The pros: Very quiet location out in the countryside in a charming historic stone building. Our room was beautiful and a good size with comfortable bed. Cozy seating areas throughout the building. Excellent breakfast buffet in a gorgeous historic room. The cons: It is well outside of Santiago, so a long drive to and from. Even when you get off the main road, you still have a long unlit drive down country lanes and a dirt road to get to the inn. No real dining options near the inn. We love our dogs, but the inn owners have several dogs that they allow to roam and BARK freely, up to 1:00 a.m. Forget about sleeping until the dogs are in for the night.
We had planned to visit Santiago de Compostela but when we got to the hotel we decided to stay put. The hotel, nestled atop a hill with forests all around and a river below, has a stunning location. An old property with many original features including the iconic Galician grain store with a cross on the roof. We were able to relax by the pool and in the sauna. Run by a father and daughter duo, the food is excellent. He prepares the savoury dishes, and she the sweet. We were brought dishes. They have their own Bachao wine label, the Albarino was delicious. The rooms were big and comfy with antique paintings and furniture. Lovely stay.
We stayed here four years ago and promised ourselves we would come back as setting, facilities and food were fabulous. I am pleased to say that we have been equally delighted with our second stay and we will be coming back again. The remoteness of the hotel makes it really special and each meal has been so delicious
What a beautiful and secluded guesthouse! Owner and his family was very kind and helpful providing input for trips. Dinner and breakfast is absolutely a must during stay at Casa Grande Do Bachao. As the owner likes dog, they’re happily running around, none the less they are all kind and avoided access at pool area and the restaurant ect. Can highly recommend if you like days off in a calm setting!
I would not recommend bringing your dog as we did. The hotels dogs run around loose which would be fine if it weren't including a heavy unspayed female who refused to leave our dog alone the entire time. We could not even let him out for a pee without being jumped on. We had politely informed the owners several times but they seemed very flippant about it and did nothing. Dogs mating is a very serious thing that needs to be carried out under supervision. Its a shame to say we spent most of our holiday unable to relax and enjoy the gardens and surrounding areas, having to constantly watch the dogs and try to keep them separate as the owners did not care. Sadly this resulted in an expensive trip to the vets for our dog on our last day due to issues the night before and all our plans for the final day out the window. The owners were fully aware but not so much as an apology or even an enquiry as to whether our dog was ok. It is incredibly distressing when your pet is hurt. A real shame to have had our stay ruined by something that could have been so easily avoided with a little care and responsibility. The area and property was simply stunning, and the employees were fantastic. Shame for the attitude of the owners.…
