We had a very pleasant week at La Carabela Hotel at the beginning of April. The breakfast buffet was surprisingly diverse; we especially valued all the fruit and veggies, i.g. oven-baked apples, fried bananas, aubergines and courgette, salad leaves and the sweet cakes. The cleaning of the rooms and making the beds were very excellent and took place often enough, so it was lovely to return in the evenings to a well-cleaned room (there might be a need to clean under the bed say once a week though). Although the open-air pool was not in use, we enjoyed swimming a few times in the covered pool, which is of course very handy should it rain. The view from our balcony towards Teide was breathtaking both during the day time and at night. The view from the roof terrace of the hotel was also very impressive and that area would be worth using more. Although there was a need for some repair work here and there (locks on the balcony and bathroom doors, shower handle), the overall feeling in the hotel was tidy and pleasant. The adjacent building was being renovated, but the construction noise did not bother us at all. The area where the hotel is located is nicely peaceful, but yet at a very short walking distance from a variety of shops and restaurants. Also we got a nice amount of exercise when walking down to the lower part of the town, to the beach and Lago Martianez, and then back up to the hotel.

I have stayed at this hotel most years since 2010 and only made one complaint in all that time and it was resolved very quickly found staff very helpful especially during the pandemic with all the paper work required. The WIFI is very good and is free the people who complained there was no remote or key for the safe didn't bother to ask at reception there is a charge for the safe as there is in most hotels and a 10 euro deposit for remote refundable at the end of your stay its a clean quiet peaceful hotel with great views of Mount Teide and the rooms are cleaned daily except Sundays its near to the supermarket shops and restaurants and the taxi stance is right next to supermarket, If you wish to go to town fare costs about 3 euro I mostly ate out which was very reasonable in nearby restaurants and used kitchen in room to make snacks. The weather is good in Puerto De La Cruz In all the 12 years I have stayed there about 9 months in total there's been less than 10 days of bad weather works out about one bad day per holiday over 12 years so weather is nowhere near as bad as people make out.

Rooms are dated, far different from the social media photos. the whole place needs some serious TLC.
24 hr reception which is a positive i suppose but all reactive nothing proactive.
some serious H&S issues, for instance the balcony we were on was the 4th flour one of the metal rungs was broken and an infant could have got through to a massive fall. my son 14, cut his foot on damaged tiles in the pool. we reported it and we got n ok we will look in to it.
positives, quite well situated with only a 20 minute walk to the beach and Lido, which is all down hill. on the way back its up about 200 steps and steep roads.
the rooms were kept clean by the house keeping department, if it wasn't for those ladies it would only be a 1 star rating. we gave them a little tip on the first week and they looked after us very well.
this is supposed to self catering but very limited facilities, two electric rings and a microwave. unless you want to cook Sag Bol every night you will struggle to cook a decent meal.
the place had the feel of a hostel for most of the two weeks we were there, a lot of turn over of young guests who had no respect for other guests. making noise all hours with no consideration of others. if you re looking for a short stay for a stag or hen then maybe give it a go.
There are a few really good things as well, the views from the balcony were stunning. on a clear day you had a great view of the volcano and surrounding hills. local to shops bars and restaurants.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in February. We had low expectations as we had paid a very small amount for our stay. When we arrived, check in was fast and the receptionist was polite. We had room 104, it had a small kitchen, dining table, beds, sunn terrace and bathroom. It was fine just for a base for our holiday. Towels were changed everyday and beds made etc. Breakfast was fine, simply eggs, beans, bacon, hams and cheeses, bread, cereal and pastries. The pool area was not great, but the beach was less than a ten minute walk so we went there everyday instead. The central area where the majority of bars and restaurants were was max 15 min walk all down hill. On the way back, some may dislike walking up hill, but you could get a taxi for a small charge of €3.50. There is a big supermarket less than a 5 min walk away, Loro Parque is approx 30 min walk, or if you go into town there is a free train which takes you there. Overall I think this hotel was excellent value and I would certainly return for a cheap break.

We were 2 weeks at this hotel, in the 5 floor. Our apartment was on teide side and sun was shining whole day to balcony. The view from the kitchen windows was teide as you can see from my picture. There was daily cleaning at rooms (not sunday). There was little kitchen in room which you can use. You can make some food etc. There is couple of cheap stores near, one supermarket is just 100m from hotel. At night there was pretty ok to sleep, altough there was some traffic in the road and busses make noise in the morning but that was not problem because we woke up 07 normally.
Room sound insulation was poor, you can hear tv from other apartment and talking.
There was not so many activities in the hotel, no gym. 2 pools , 1 heated. 4 places total where you can enjoy sun. 2 roof areas and 2 pools.
Hotel is about 1km from pdlc centrum, you can walk easily if you dont afraid stairs and uphill. But if you dont want to walk you can drive with taxi it costs only 4€ in the city area.
Wifi internet costs 2€ per day and it works average.. sometimes fast sometimes slow.
There is bus stop in 100m of the hotel, you can go for example to Teide or Santa cruz with bus. 103 goes directly to Santa Cruz and price is 5€ for one direction.
In conclusion i can say if you want superluxus dont go to la carabela, but if you want to stay in budget and can live with little noise this is good hotel. In my opinion i would choose this next time.

I stayed here with friends for a week although the rooms are basic they were very clean and were cleaned everyday. We stayed on the 3rd floor and the view from the balcony was amazing! We went self catering and there were only 2 rings to cook with and no kettle which I think is the only downfall. The pool is small but nice and cleaned regularly, there is another hidden pool on the other side but we didn't use it didn't visit the solarium but told that was nice. Supermarkets are close by and loads of restaurants. It's a bit of a walk down to the town (20mins) and down a quite steep hill but worth visiting. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Wifi is available free in reception or €2 a day for your room. Do not get tv in your room as they only have Spanish channels. Most of the people staying at the hotel were Spanish apart from another couple. We didn't eat in the hotel but it looked and smelt lovely. The nightlife around this area is something to be desired but a quiet hotel for families. I would suggest a car if you are more of the sightseeing type - animal park is only down the road and a free tram from the town is provided but the waterpark and main town is quite a distance (100k). I would definitely stay here again if I wanted a quiet holiday excellent value for money!

Dear Frankki, Thank you very much for taking your time and use your mobile phone to send your opinions on the Tripadvisor. We appreciate very much your comments that help us to improve and research for the best value for money. Indeed rooms are cleaned daily except Sundays. We take good notice of the missing kettle and the TV as we do have a Sat TV and this is now fixed. The Carabela is in a residential area not far from the downtown, but as a compensation you have at the back the nice residential area of La Paz with numerous cafés, restaurants, shops, the botanical gardens, viewpoint, etc. even the bus stop is very close. Once again thank you for your comments, and please check our website for offers as repeating customer. Hope you have a safe journey home. The managerment.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel for 10 days in July! We booked it last minute and got an amazing deal! When we arrived at the hotel the receptionist was worried as he said he only had one room left and he wasn't sure if we would be happy with it as it was slightly below the pool, we went down to it but it was actually fine, lovely and bright and clean and there were steps up to pool so we were happy enough although a room came available later that day with amazing views of mount teide so we moved in the end but we thought it was nice of the staff as they didn't have to do that! The hotel lobby is lovely when you walk in, so bright and airy with a glass roof. There is a cute little bar area and pool table. The rooms are basic enough but impeccably clean, the maid comes in every day and does a full deep clean and changes towels. The rooms aren't the biggest but most have lovely views and a separate little galley kitchen with 2 rings on the cooker and microwave. Could probably do with a kettle. There are little flat screen tv's in the room as well and a nice little balcony. It's situated in a lovely quiet, up market ish' area with the top 5 star hotel in the area just up the road. There are some nice little restaurants (one with a superb view of the ocean from really high advantage point) also a supermarket and buses to north and south airport across the road so no need for transfers as the bus only stopped once and it was really speedy to south airport and only cost €14 one way! I would definitely recommend this little hotel for couples or friends, Maybe not families as there is no entertainment at night or nothing for kids only the 2 swimming pools. Definitely more couple friendly! We also stayed in their sister hotel 'Pez azul' with friends on the 1st night but this hotel is not as nice at all, quite dreary and very basic so if you're trying to decide then go with La Carabella! It's perfect for a relaxing holiday although it's mainly cloudy a lot of the time, only had 3 full sunny days out of 11 in July! :( Although it's still really warm. Try 'Kafta' tapas restaurant down at the harbor, amazing food. There's also some nice lively bars and restaurants in the main square in puerto de la cruz! Lovely place, enjoy x

After reading the recent reviews on here before we left for Tenerife, I will confess - I WAS WORRIED.

Worried about it being dirty. Worried about the grumpy receptionist. Worried about the food. Worried about the walk back from town and the hills. Worried about La Carabela.

Well - guess what? Did I go to a different La Carabela? Where had those other reviewers gone to? Or maybe it was their expectations.

Well like I said after reading recent reviews before our stay in November, our expectations were shall we say, low.

We arrived lunchtime on a Sunday. Receptionist booked us in efficiently and with no hassle. Up in an apartment on 3rd floor overlooking the covered swimming pool.

Apartment clean and yes decor could be classed as 'tired' - but come on where do you think you are staying the flaming RITZ?

These are budget apartments and we found them to be quite surprising. he whole place was clean and all credit to the women who cleaned our room daily - even down to making fancy ducks and fans with the towels. The only people that made our room any less than spotless were US.

The 'grumpy' receptionist? Well I found her and told her that many people on TA reckoned she was grumpy - she smiled. She was fine. Dont forget english is not her first language, but she communicates and we found her helpful when we needed help. I dont expect her to be flirty, chatty etc, I expect a receptionist to be able to dispense advice if we need it, guidance if we need it and maybe even sort things out if things go wrong - they didnt.

La Carabela is what you pay for - a room with a bed, a balcony with table and chairs, a bathroom with shower. It has a bar which you could use if you needed a drink on your return. A restaurant which we used for breakfast on 3 occasions. Now of course if I was staying all inclusive (if such an offer here exists) I might have a different viewpoint. But lets take brekkie. If staying on self catering/room only you can pay to take breakfast - its 5euros. And in my honest opinion its not a great standard.....BUT what do you get> You get the usual continental fare, cereals, bread, toast, plenty of fruit and some pastries plus cold meats and cheeses AND bacon sausages (mini hot dog type things) hard boiled eggs or scrambled eggs - all in buffet style all you can eat. And fruit juices and coffee or tea

So for 5 measly euros you can set yourself up for the day - quality not fabulous, but there is enough to eat and did I say its FIVE MEASLY EUROS !!

You would be heard pressed to go into town and find a better value as 'full english' is often more than 5euros and thats without a cuppa or drinks and of course no fruit, cereal, pastries etc.

So you can see I am trying to be realistic and honest here rather than expecting perfection and something basically you are not paying for.

The front of the apartments is quite smart and leads into an open plan and airy, spacious reception/bar area with pool table and leaflets and info on what to do in the area.

Quick tip - if walking into town turn right out of front entrance and keep walking till you hit the sea. Its downhill so coming back is UPHILL. But taxi from town to La Carabela is metered and around 4 euros - peanuts

If you go out of the rear entrance to the opposite end of reception, a quick right and a left and across the road is a large supermarket and the La Paz area with shops, bars and restaurants - so no need for any strenuous uphill walking, its virtually on your doorstep.

Also the road you cross - literally 100 yards from the back entrance - takes you gently upwards towards the Botanic Gardens and across from that another big shopping area. So you dont need to always have to go down into town unless you are heading for the sea or the Costa Martianez and the bulk of the resort.

So I have one word for anyone with concerns or worries about La Carabela - DONT. Its more than a case of 'you get what you pay for here'. Our week in Tenerife was marred by cloudy skies for 5 days, but we did get to use the indoor pool and the sunloungers. And sure there is nothing to do at night - no entertainment programme, but its advertised as such. If you have the sunshine, you dont need 'entertainment' and you are not paying for it, so dont expect it.

And wi-fi throughout the hotel for free AND its pretty quick wifi too

La Carabela - just enjoy what it gives you rather than gripe about what it doesnt have - its not 5 star, but you are not paying for 5 star
