24 hr reception which is a positive i suppose but all reactive nothing proactive.
some serious H&S issues, for instance the balcony we were on was the 4th flour one of the metal rungs was broken and an infant could have got through to a massive fall. my son 14, cut his foot on damaged tiles in the pool. we reported it and we got n ok we will look in to it.
positives, quite well situated with only a 20 minute walk to the beach and Lido, which is all down hill. on the way back its up about 200 steps and steep roads.
the rooms were kept clean by the house keeping department, if it wasn't for those ladies it would only be a 1 star rating. we gave them a little tip on the first week and they looked after us very well.
this is supposed to self catering but very limited facilities, two electric rings and a microwave. unless you want to cook Sag Bol every night you will struggle to cook a decent meal.
the place had the feel of a hostel for most of the two weeks we were there, a lot of turn over of young guests who had no respect for other guests. making noise all hours with no consideration of others. if you re looking for a short stay for a stag or hen then maybe give it a go.
There are a few really good things as well, the views from the balcony were stunning. on a clear day you had a great view of the volcano and surrounding hills. local to shops bars and restaurants.
Room sound insulation was poor, you can hear tv from other apartment and talking.
There was not so many activities in the hotel, no gym. 2 pools , 1 heated. 4 places total where you can enjoy sun. 2 roof areas and 2 pools.
Hotel is about 1km from pdlc centrum, you can walk easily if you dont afraid stairs and uphill. But if you dont want to walk you can drive with taxi it costs only 4€ in the city area.
Wifi internet costs 2€ per day and it works average.. sometimes fast sometimes slow.
There is bus stop in 100m of the hotel, you can go for example to Teide or Santa cruz with bus. 103 goes directly to Santa Cruz and price is 5€ for one direction.
In conclusion i can say if you want superluxus dont go to la carabela, but if you want to stay in budget and can live with little noise this is good hotel. In my opinion i would choose this next time.
Worried about it being dirty. Worried about the grumpy receptionist. Worried about the food. Worried about the walk back from town and the hills. Worried about La Carabela.
Well - guess what? Did I go to a different La Carabela? Where had those other reviewers gone to? Or maybe it was their expectations.
Well like I said after reading recent reviews before our stay in November, our expectations were shall we say, low.
We arrived lunchtime on a Sunday. Receptionist booked us in efficiently and with no hassle. Up in an apartment on 3rd floor overlooking the covered swimming pool.
Apartment clean and yes decor could be classed as 'tired' - but come on where do you think you are staying the flaming RITZ?
These are budget apartments and we found them to be quite surprising. he whole place was clean and all credit to the women who cleaned our room daily - even down to making fancy ducks and fans with the towels. The only people that made our room any less than spotless were US.
The 'grumpy' receptionist? Well I found her and told her that many people on TA reckoned she was grumpy - she smiled. She was fine. Dont forget english is not her first language, but she communicates and we found her helpful when we needed help. I dont expect her to be flirty, chatty etc, I expect a receptionist to be able to dispense advice if we need it, guidance if we need it and maybe even sort things out if things go wrong - they didnt.
La Carabela is what you pay for - a room with a bed, a balcony with table and chairs, a bathroom with shower. It has a bar which you could use if you needed a drink on your return. A restaurant which we used for breakfast on 3 occasions. Now of course if I was staying all inclusive (if such an offer here exists) I might have a different viewpoint. But lets take brekkie. If staying on self catering/room only you can pay to take breakfast - its 5euros. And in my honest opinion its not a great standard.....BUT what do you get> You get the usual continental fare, cereals, bread, toast, plenty of fruit and some pastries plus cold meats and cheeses AND bacon sausages (mini hot dog type things) hard boiled eggs or scrambled eggs - all in buffet style all you can eat. And fruit juices and coffee or tea
So for 5 measly euros you can set yourself up for the day - quality not fabulous, but there is enough to eat and did I say its FIVE MEASLY EUROS !!
You would be heard pressed to go into town and find a better value as 'full english' is often more than 5euros and thats without a cuppa or drinks and of course no fruit, cereal, pastries etc.
So you can see I am trying to be realistic and honest here rather than expecting perfection and something basically you are not paying for.
The front of the apartments is quite smart and leads into an open plan and airy, spacious reception/bar area with pool table and leaflets and info on what to do in the area.
Quick tip - if walking into town turn right out of front entrance and keep walking till you hit the sea. Its downhill so coming back is UPHILL. But taxi from town to La Carabela is metered and around 4 euros - peanuts
If you go out of the rear entrance to the opposite end of reception, a quick right and a left and across the road is a large supermarket and the La Paz area with shops, bars and restaurants - so no need for any strenuous uphill walking, its virtually on your doorstep.
Also the road you cross - literally 100 yards from the back entrance - takes you gently upwards towards the Botanic Gardens and across from that another big shopping area. So you dont need to always have to go down into town unless you are heading for the sea or the Costa Martianez and the bulk of the resort.
So I have one word for anyone with concerns or worries about La Carabela - DONT. Its more than a case of 'you get what you pay for here'. Our week in Tenerife was marred by cloudy skies for 5 days, but we did get to use the indoor pool and the sunloungers. And sure there is nothing to do at night - no entertainment programme, but its advertised as such. If you have the sunshine, you dont need 'entertainment' and you are not paying for it, so dont expect it.
And wi-fi throughout the hotel for free AND its pretty quick wifi too
La Carabela - just enjoy what it gives you rather than gripe about what it doesnt have - its not 5 star, but you are not paying for 5 star
"pool was never crowded despite the fact it was quite small. missing tiles and some sharp edges. good bus route very close to the Hotel. "Read full review
"Our room was on the fourth floor and had a magnificent view towards Teide. Our balcony was not glazed, and did not feel the need for it."Read full review
