Hotel Pez Espada by Medplaya has a mixed reputation among guests, with its prime location near beaches and marinas often receiving high praise. However, some travelers feel the hotel doesn't offer good value for money, citing costly upgrades and additional fees. While service is generally recognized as friendly and professional, there are occasional lapses noted. The atmosphere provides a mix of modernity and retro charm, though it can be compromised by disturbances. Room experiences vary, with some finding them to be clean and comfortable and others noting issues. Cleanliness is consistently commended across the hotel, with well-maintained amenities, despite some reports of inconsistencies.

Inn well located for family holidays.
Access to the promenade, beaches and restaurants is perfect.
Breakfast is very hearty and varied and the hours are wide, which allows you to also make fat mornings!
There is daily music by the pool with singer and DJ.
It does not break the ears and is very varied, very appreciable in the afternoon on the deckchair.
On the other hand, a refreshment would be appreciated on the exterior buildings as well as the swimming pool.
It is poorly maintained, often dirty and you can find bandages or hair on the surroundings.
Showers are also not cleaned.
The bathing supervisor spends his day watching travelers bathe but never intervenes with children who dive despite the no-go signs!
Animators grab the pool (not big enough for everyone) for water aerobics or repechage games with children! Which leaves you little room!
Air conditioning is extremely strong at the reception and non-existent on the floors of the rooms (untenable heat).
Door access to the promenade very noisy, which slams non-stop, a retarder would be nice to let holidaymakers rest on the deckchairs!
Very noisy maid in the morning, who keep talking next to your room.
The cleaning remains very minimal! Sheets changed (I stained a sheet, it was changed but not the toilet:-/) towels changed but no broom or vacuum cleaner, lots of hair stay in the bathroom and the shower is not cleaned.
Very average for a 4*
Lawnmower at 8am or 11.30am when you want to sit on the deckchairs!
Huge fig tree filled with fruits that are not collected. Everything falls to the ground and crashes in the driveway... pity they are not picked up and offered for breakfast!
Watch out for a private beach.
Paid sunbeds and umbrellas!
Staff unkind welcome.

Lovely hotel. Great location only 5-10min walk to Benalmadena marina and same in the other direction to a lovely street just off the promenade with lots of shops bars and restaurants. Hotel is very clean. Pool area very spacious and never an issue getting a sunbed. Room cleaning was done every day with fresh towels and toilet paper. Loved how the safe was free to use. Breakfast was ok we didn't have evening meal as only booked B&B. Would love to go back next year but we are disappointed to see with Jet2 it's actually more expensive to go B&B next year as we don't eat evening meal in any hotels we stay as we like to sample local places.

Bad Bits.
We paid to upgrade our room to a superior with side sea view, we was given a room in the old block tucked in the corner on a lower floor, a terrible location with literally no view unless you lean out and limited sunshine hours, its a lottery as to if you get a decent room or not and would not have paid a premium for this room. The room had been refurbed to an ok standard but with issues that shouldn't have been overlooked, the flooring was split and slightly raised to the point the wife hurt her foot on it, its right in the middle of the floor and unavoidable , the plaster wall had cracking around the frames, the shower seals dirty, the fridge actually warmed thing's up and no English speaking channels working on the tv. My advise is do not pay to upgrade your room before you go, do it when you land you can negotiate for a better room in the new block as pictured on the advertisments.
The main pool and kids was only open from 11am-5pm then a barrier placed around it. The hotel was packed out and the weather was 28 degrees, I was told it wasn't peak season so the lifeguard only worked limited hours, yet the prices are peak prices, also the shower around the pool had notices to not use and conserve water. I met with friends from other hotels who had all the showers running and pool open literally all daylight hours, the Pez was the only hotel to be running on limited hours.
The gym equipment is tired and the main machine is a tangled mess of snapped bully cords and wheels and does not work.
No afternoon snacks or drinks by the pool, again I was told too early in the season, although the weather was fantastic and the hotel was almost full
Meal times are very bland and and freshly cooked, meets, eggs on the grill station are done it seems as slowly as possible, People just got fed up of waiting and this I think was purely to conserve the amount of product consumed. Evening meals do not include and drinks, even water is charged to your room. Frank Sinatra is great singer, but after hearing the same record coming out of the speakers everywhere in the hotel for a full week, it drive you crazy. You can't even escape to the pool because it's most likely shut. The atmosphere around the hotel was non existent and felt like the film "Cocoon"
Good Bits
Exceptionally clean around the hotel, most of the food is fresh although not topped up or replaced quick enough, good friendly staff, Location is the best. Despite all of the above we adapted and still managed to enjoy our holiday to the Costa Del Sol.

Would I return?
No there are better hotels a stones throw away from the Pez.

Absolutely love this hotel and its interior, however there are many steps and ups and downs, assistance is available. Restaurant is a bit of a bun fight and you might find yourself queuing at busy times. The food is very good and varied. The beds and some of the chairs outside are uncomfortable. The beds in the room are very comfortable and cleaning is to an average standard. The bar staff are very professional and get the job done, some reception staff appear uninterested. The reason I have given this hotel 3 stars, on our last day we were to be collected at 6/6.30 pm. We were told that if we wanted to keep our room it would be at an extra cost of 40 euros and that was only if they hadn’t booked it out. It was booked out and this hotel did not offer us any shower/changing facilities. A dirty tatty room was available for us to store our cases. We have stayed at 8 hotels in Torremolinos and all have at the very least offered showering facilities if there is a late check out. We also had no internet in our room and when reporting this the young lady on reception was extremely rude and uninterested. Sadly we will not stay here again. P.s please be aware, towels and water cash is required.

We stayed here for a week this September, it was our second visit to the hotel, having stayed the previous September too. The hotel itself is large and comfortable with all the facilities you would expect; a pool, restaurant, two bars, even a gym, though I didn’t use that. The pool is only open from 10am-7pm, and outside of these times it is fenced off so you can’t use it, I think this is because they have a lifeguard but only during these hours, so if you like an early morning dip, you will need to swim in the sea. Luckily it is very close by, and lovely and warm. The loungers around the pool are a bit worn and not particularly comfortable, but there are a lot available so you won’t struggle to find one.

The room was large and with a balcony with a pool and sea view. Air conditioning is included and was very welcome. Beds were comfortable, and room was cleaned every day. Shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner and lotion are all provided and replenished daily if used. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the room and also replenished daily.

The hotel is conveniently located right on the beach, you can walk out of the back gate and access the beach by walking across the promenade. There are several beach bars and restaurants nearby, as well as shops where you can buy food, gifts, etc. The marina is walking distance away, and you can get to the town centre by bus, or a longer walk.

Breakfast is served from 7.30-10.30am and gets a bit hectic later on, but is lovely and quiet if you can get there early. Dinner is 7-10pm. No drinks are included with dinner, not even water which will cost you €2.50 for a standard bottle, which seemed a bit steep to me. They have water and coffee freely available with breakfast, so I assume this is to encourage you to buy more expensive beverages. If water had been free though, we might have bought other drinks to go with the meal, but didn’t want to spring for both every day so mostly stuck with just the water. They will keep your bottle of wine for you and bring it back the next day if you don’t finish it.

There is a lot of choice of food, both for breakfast and dinner. One problem we had though is that the labelling on the various dishes leaves a lot to be desired. Often labels are missing completely, and where they are present, they don’t contain information about whether a dish is vegetarian, vegan, or whether it contains any allergens. This makes it very difficult for those with dietary requirements, and it would be very easy to fix just by adding the information to the labels and making sure that they are placed by the food. They could even put the information in the website accessed by the QR codes found around the hotel. This one little adjustment would make meals much easier for a lot of people.

All in all the hotel is very nice. With a few very minor tweaks it could be wonderful.

We spent our beach holiday here, and this was a good decision even though the hotel was a bit pricey.

The club room offered a beautiful view of the pool area, the nearby palm garden and of course the sea. With the very large bed and sofa the room appeared not overly big but just right for us. The bed was comfy. The bathroom, while kept clean and intact, would need a bit of an upgrade soon (e.g. remove very old bath tube, install separate shower).

The hotel is overall kept in good shape, as are the pool, it's area and the sunbeds. There was a fresh smell in the lobby area and large seating areas for arriving / departing guests.

The restaurant offered a very good breakfast and also a nice dinner buffet (we got a very good price for half-board and it was more than worth the money!). Tables were reset instantly for new guests and there was no wait even at peak times. Prices for drinks were moderate.

A few other remarks:

- friendly staff
- brilliant location
- very clean
- direct access to beachwalk
- poolside toilets would need more cleaning
- good internet, just the forced surveys that appear sometimes are anoying
- thin walls, some noise from neighbors
- lots of families with small children
- animation, e.g. dart, aquafit, singing, etc.
- gym equipment is very basic and partly not working at all (e.g. crosstrainer machines)

Overall experience was good, so the rating is a round up 4.

Recently returned from a 4 night break at the Medplaya Pez Espada booked with Tui.
Having stayed at previous Benalmadena Medplaya Hotels, (Tui Blu Riviera), we were expecting a similar standard of service at the Pez Espada. Sadly, this was not the case!
There was no TUI welcome party or welcome drink on arrival.
We asked for a empty glass to take to our room and were advised that there was a charge of 1 .5 euros per glass.
The room was clean but very small with a tiny balcony. Bathroom was good with a nice walk in shower although this lacked power.
The Safe didn't work. Poor quality beds - the leg on my husbands bed broke twice within a 4 night stay.
The hotel does not have a Spa and nowhere to shower and change on the last day. We asked to purchase a late check out but the hotel was fully booked.
The grounds are quite basic with sunbeds on the grass inviting the mossies to bite you alive.
Food was ok in general. Limited chouce but you would always find something to eat. We had to queue to get into the restaurant in the evening unless we arrived before 7.20pm
We emailed the hotel beforehand to inform them that it was both mine and my husbands birthday. The email was not acknowledged and there was no sign of any celebratory extras in our room.
The Med Playa, Tui Blu Riveria in Benalnadema is far superior, less expensive with beautiful grounds, a lovely Spa and outside Jacuzzi, complimentary bottle of wine and fruit in your room and a welcome drink on arrival.
These little touches make a huge difference to make your guests feel welcome.
Sadly, I did not experience a welcome feeling at this hotel and would not recommend or return.
I feel it promotes itself on the previous "famous" guests who have stayed there. This is very dated. My advice is to look after todays guests.

We are coming to the end of our stay here. Have to bear in mind we have been here since mid January to the first week of February so what it is like in Winter has to be taken into consideration. The Hotel is much quieter, the Pool too cold, the Ice Cream parlour and the lunchtime truck not open, and the downstair Bar wasn't open until the end of January, everything would look different in a month or two.
Reception:
Efficient on arrival but really lacked some welcoming personality.
Room:
We had a Superior Club Room overlooking the Pool and happened to be on the 6th Floor. It was a large room, decent balcony overlooking the Pool, good views of the sea, excellent shower, TV with BBC 1 & 2, ITV and some kids channels, and a kettle. Very clean, and had the sun on it from lunchtime until it went down. Rooms on the other side of the corridor were smaller and only got the sun until lunch.
On the downside there was a lack of cupboard space/drawers but you manage.
There is an annex to the Hotel and a new part at the front with Jacuzzis, although the new part doesn't get much sun at this time of year.
The Rooms have the thinnest walls i have ever known, you can hear snoring next door !
Food
Overall very good, Breakfasts are brilliant, some of the evening Buffet not so good. We stayed for 3 weeks so you do fed up of Buffet and we worked out which nights to avoid and eat out. Initially they seemed to have the bare minimum staff in the Restaurant which improved as time moved on, again they are efficient and work hard but never converse with you or smile, the only one that really had any personality was "Jabe" who was excellent, pleasant, chatty, and helpful, we always sat near his area.
Location:
Excellent, right on the front overlooking the Beach and the longest promenade you have ever seen, short walk to Benalmadena or longer walk to Torremolinos which is a great town to wander round, lots of shops.
Transport:
Taxis can be a touch expensive but not too bad, the Train station is a 20 minute walk away uphill, Buses are the best solution. Short walk up the street and you can get a Bus either way, Fuengirola, Benalmadena , Mijas one way, or Torremolinos town and Malaga the other way. Go to a Tobacconist and buy a Bus Card (which works on the train as well) its 1.50 Euro for the card and you put money on it eg 10 Euro. Every time you get on the bus you touch the panel next to driver and it knocks off the amount, generally most journeys are 50 cent pp so very cheap. Can be busy but its a cheap way to visit places.
Entertainment:
An Artist on most nights, mostly a singer, odd nights three tenors or a Michael Jackson tribute. Some of which were excellent, one or two not so. If there is no artist you play Bingo for a massive prize, a half of local beer or soft dinner for the Winner, you would think they could stretch to a Cocktail at least.
Overall we had a good Holiday, no Hotel is prefect, bits of this one could have been better but it is rightly rated as a 4 Star.

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your stay. We’re sorry that some services, like the food truck and ice cream parlour, were not available during the winter season, but we’re glad you could enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the hotel at this time of year. This is a very stylish hotel with attractive lounges and bar areas, most of the walls are adorned with pictures of old Movie Stars and memorabilia from its hay day in the sixties. We booked direct with Med Playa and requested a high floor room, also e-mailed the hotel direct so we’re disappointed on arrival to be given a room on the second floor. We had booked a Superior Club Room and should have had bathrobes, slippers and wine, none of which were in the room. We returned to reception complained and they sorted the problem quickly. We also requested a room change to a higher floor but were told nothing was available until the following day at lunchtime, this was very inconvenient as we couldn’t unpack and settle in. Our new room a day later was on the six floor, small but nicely furnished and equipped and with lovely views of pool and sea. Unfortunately we had a problem with a bad smell of drains in the bathroom which we reported to reception but never fully resolved. Also room was very warm as it got sun all day and air con wasn’t working. When we enquired at reception they said the air con system was not turned on until the end of April.
The restaurant, which was very modern, wasn’t to our taste as we prefer a more traditional style. Staff were very hard working and provided a great service. Food choice is good but buffet layout is disjointed and cramped. Salad bar was good but unfortunately we found much of the hot food to be cold so ate mainly from the cooking station where you could usually get fish or meat directly off the grill.
Outside the grounds are well maintained and there are plenty of beds with no problems of people reserving them early. Pool was absolutely freezing and in March was in the shade most of the afternoon. If you wanted a drink or snack by the pool there was nothing available, the food/snack truck was closed for the entire week.
Location of the hotel is excellent with direct access to the promenade and equidistant from Carrihuela and the Marina.
Although the hotel is well maintained and spotlessly clean it did appear a bit empty and impersonal even though it was full when we were there. The gift of a bottle of Cava for my wife’s birthday was a very nice touch, Thankyou.
