Arriving after 10 pm my check in was a bit worrisome as the reception was closed during night. A short phone call ahead of time was necessary to organize everything and it worked perfect. Free parking next to an entrance. Clean, spacious room with a view to the local church (could not be better!). After an absolutely quiet night, there was a fantastic breakfast. Very friendly, helpful staff. I hope they have a room available next time I visit Wittenberg again!

Closure: terrible news. Reports have it thar the Alte Canzley has closed. I’m sure there must have been an understandable reason for this, because the professionalism, kindness and class of the management and staff were examplary. I last checked out in early November 2022 after patronizing this wonderful hotel for 30 years. I only hope that the hotel is reopened but, in any case, I wish the management and staff every good fortune.

What can I say that I’ve not said before?? Nothing. I just ended my 14th time there and I’m just as impressed as ever. A warm and thoroughly professional staff, quer, comfortable rooms, and a location steeped in history. Always a wonderful pleasure.

It was a thrill to have a view of the Castle Church. The room was huge and the breakfast was delicious. The mattress and pillow were very comfortable which is an absolute priority for me. The white upholstered chairs needed a good cleaning, but that's not a big deal to me. The spaciousness and the view can't be beat! It's in a perfect location. The restaurant is also a great place to have dinner. I will stay here again next time we come to whitenburg.

According to the locals we talked to in Lutherstadt Wittenberg this is one of the more expensive hotels in town. It is probably also the best, and in our opinion was quite reasonably priced. Free parking was conveniently located in the back. The reception was only open in the evening and while they did not speak English very well, check-in was flawless. The building, conveniently located next door to the Tourist Information Bureau. While it doesn't look like it, the building was about 350 years old, but has been impeccably remodeled. Our room was up a winding staircase in a very old stone tower, however there was also a good lift. The rooms do not have numbers, but instead are labeled with names. We were in the Michael Agricola room, and access was by a computer-controlled card you held up to the door lock. Our room was immense, and very clean and well appointed. It had two easy chairs, in addition to a writing desk and chair. The beds were very comfortable, with a nice bathroom and a reasonable sized shower. There was even a kitchenette, with small refrigerator. Our three large windows, from one floor up, looked directly across the street at the Castle Church doors (see photo) where Martin Luther allegedly hung his 95 theses on October 31, 1517 and launched the Reformation. It was hard to imagine a better setting. We had dinner at the hotel on two different nights. In neither case did our waitress speak a word of English, and even though there was an English menu she had to match it up with the German version to figure out what we were ordering. The food was excellent, and the outdoor portion of the seating located in the courtyard behind the hotel was quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was very good, and while the only hot item was boiled eggs, the breads, cheeses, meats, and yogurt was excellent. I cannot say enough good things about his hotel. If you are a Martin Luther fan this is a place where you must stay, and for sure ask for the Michael Agricola room. You won’t be sorry you chose this fine hotel.

Even if a person is NOT interested in history, this hotel will stir interest. For Luther fans nothing can compare. Waking up next to the Thesentuer is an unforgettable experience. Incredible also to think that Peter The Geat and Charles XII also stayed here. The hotel itself is wonderful. The rooms spacious and cheerful, the amenities comfortable and modern, and the food great. Just an absolutely wonderful place to which I will want to return often

Our family stopped here on Spring Break and found the location perfect for our visit to Martin Luther's historic hometown. The staff was nice enough at check in and the rooms are somewhat dated but fine. The receptionist told us breakfast was from 7:00-10:00 AM which we attended the next morning. Afterwards, we were told at 10:45 AM that check out was at 11:00 AM to which I responded we would be out shortly after. When I received our bill, we were charged 25 Euro for late check out, 39 Euro for having our daughter stay on the pull out couch and 64.50 Euro for breakfast!! The hotel was quite empty. I felt very taken advantage of!!

What a great place to stay in L.Wittenberg. Stayed here twice during my bicycle trip in Germany and enjoyed it very much. Speaking of "room with a view" ! My room, rather apartment (#2) had view on the Church door, where Luther once nailed down his 95 theses. Alte Canzley is a small hotel, therefore reception is not permanently staffed, however the in-house restaurant staff is very helpful in case the reception is closed. Alte Canzley has good facilities for bicycle riders. Enjoy the local cuisine in their restaurant. Alte Canzley is right in the center of L.Wittenberg, therefore more restaurants in walking distance. By the way: the Tourist Information office is next door. All in all: highly recommended.

We stayed in the 'Peter the Great' room. A bit on the expensive side, but if you're in Wittenberg on the Luther trail, there really is no better place to stay. The room looks right out over THE doorway where Luther nailed the 95 theses. The hotel has its own Reformation history - it's part of the experience. The room is HUGE (so big it needs capital letters), and yes, I felt like Peter the Great in it. Includes a kitchette (a sink, fridge, crochery, but no microwave), cable TV (not much good for non-German speakers), hairdryer, writing desk, and fast internet (using a cable). Brekky was included - rolls, ham and cheese selections, fruit, cereal, some kind of slices, boiled eggs. Lady at the front desk was helpful, and spoke English. The room was so nice, we contemplated skipping the sightseeing and just staying in. Brilliant.

we were looking for an affordable room close to the center of Wittenberg. This hotel is perfect for exploring Martin Luther's town. Although not really cheap it offers charming rooms in historic surrounding. The staff is helpful once you open their hearts. Breakfast is extra.

Room Tip: 5 rooms face the church, 3 do not. Take the ones towards the church.
