Clean, friendly staff and a comfortable room. Very good location close to the Messe and also the resturants and bars. The price is acceptable. The park place is very convenient, but you can first try to find one of the free slots in the streets in the near bye.

As I've been coming to this hotel every year for over 10 years I think its worthy of a second positive review since my last one was back in 2012! I've stayed at this hotel every year when attending shows at the Messe Essen. The Gruga is perfectly location if you're working at the halls and wanting somewhere nearby that's clean, comfortable and with good service. The Gruga staff always look after you and the rooms are clean and well presented. Breakfast only with no bar or options for dinner in the hotel but there are many restaurants 2 minutes walk away so this isn't really a problem Not all rooms have coffee making facilities so worth checking what you've booked but the staff are always happy to make you some in the lounge if you need one.

We having been coming here for the Spiel Convention in the halls opposite for 11 years now. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the rooms spacious and clean, the breakfasts well cooked and presented. Nothing is too much trouble.

Have stayed here a few times now as I like the more Boutique style it offers over the bigger corporate hotels. Great location for the Messe and the restaurants on Rüttenscheider Strasse. Down side is the rooms don’t have Air Conditioning so in summer can be very warm.

Dear guest, thank you very much for your positive feedback. We are happy to welcome you at our hotel. We always try to separate ourselves from the big hotels by our personality. But you are right with the air conditioner. Unfortunately, it is not possible to set up air conditioning for all rooms. We currently have fans in the rooms and all guests get cool refreshments for the really hot days. Hope to see you again, soon. With best regards from Essen, Katharina Kämpf, Front Office Manager

My room was in a separate building from reception and breakfast area, so I had to walk though the back yard of the main building to get to the building I slept in. Room was quite small (photo attached), with limited privacy, as it only had black-out curtains, but no see-through curtains to limit view of overhead buildings into my room. This meant that during the day the room had no sunlight. It is probably the first time I stay in a hotel without a combination of see-through curtains and black-out curtains. The mattress was quite uncomfortable, but room was very quiet. The bathroom seems to have gone through a renovation recently, but the radiators have not been cleaned in years (attached photo!). On the first morning at 6 am, on the 16th of April, there was no warm water, just freezing cold water to shower. During breakfast I heard others were complaining of the same issue. When I asked reception they told me it was due to an electrical issue but did not apologize, probably suggesting that this issue happens often and that staff cannot be bothered to apologize every time. The hotel has a convenient private car park.

Dear Mr. Sardella, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You’re totally right, something has gone wrong during your stay. And this performance is not consistent with our standards. Please accept my apology. I would like to invite you to another stay with us to show you how the standards should be and why we got so many positive reviews. I hope to hear from you, soon. Sincerely, Katharina Kämpf, Front Office Manager
