We actually enjoyed our stay at the Koeln Dorint, however there were some very simple things, that, had they happened, would have revolutionised our stay and made it feel 5 star as opposed to 4 star. Explanations are below and to make it easier for the Dorint management to address, I will start with what needs to be changed to reflect the quality a 5-star hotel should bring: - It must be made explicit to all guests beforehand, at least on the day of travel, that you have to take a Corona test to stay in your hotel. It should be added in red letters on the confirmation you receive when you book or be on your website. Or an email the day before you arrive. Guests who have just had a long drive from the Netherlands, who checked your website and the German governmental website thoroughly to ensure they don’t have to do this, do NOT want to be told upon arrival that they have to do it for a fee and much stress when we could have done it for free back home. We do not want to walk to a test centre, have to book an appointment outside on our tiny mobile phones and then have to pay (when your reception staff told us it would be free – it is EUR 27.50.) This is not a relaxing start to your stay. - It must be made explicit that there are no toiletry articles in your room and that if you want them, you have to ask at reception. It would be nice if you would have a good range (we asked for cotton buds and pads but there weren’t any. We did get some the next day upon asking though.) - It must also be made explicit that If you want your room cleaned, you have to ask for it. I would have thought this pretty standard in a 5 star. We noticed that our room had not been cleaned and asked at reception. She replied “well, if you want your room cleaned, we will do it.” It should be clear upon check in that if you want your room cleaned, you have to ask. - It must also be explicit that if you want a bathrobe and slippers for the sauna you need to ask. - It must be made clear that the sauna and spa are not free and that the opening times are not the same as on the internet (it says that it closes at 10pm on Saturday. It was 8pm.) - Tell your staff that sauna/spa use is included in the price of a superior room. The receptionist did not know this and tried to charge us. - Some pictures of the gym on your website would be nice to show that if you are a hard-core sports fan, you will love this. If you are more about relaxation – you won’t. The story: Before we left from the Netherlands, we checked Covid restrictions thoroughly. No quarantine was needed (that day Germany had 40 new Corona cases, probably more cases of Typhoid that day!). The website said nothing about needing a Corona test. Nor did our confirmation. So confident was I, I changed my booking to a non-refundable one. When we arrived at the hotel, we were asked for our Corona test. I replied that nowhere on their website, nor on the German national website was there anything about needing a negative Corona test to stay in a hotel. The nice lady at reception pointed us in the direction of a testing centre which was very close. She told us it would be free. Upon arrival at the testing centre, it turned out that we had to book a slot in advance. We did it outside from our phones which took ages and was not easy. It was also not free – 27.50 for non-Germans. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait and the test was done very well. 15 minutes later we had our results. Upon arriving back at the hotel, a staff member took a cursory glance at my phone, nodded and didn’t even ask for my partner’s test result! We got to our room – absolutely huge (superior – 3rd best category out of 4 but no cathedral view. Only the comfort rooms have a cathedral view) and noticed there were no toiletry articles. I went downstairs and asked but they didn’t have cotton buds or pads. I got a shower cap though, wondering why a 5-star hotel hadn’t provided basic toiletries in a superior room and I had to go to reception and ask. The next day we switched our door to “please clean.” We got back quite late to find the room had not been cleaned. I went to reception and told the receptionist and she said “Do you want your room cleaned?” I affirmed. I also thought to mention that the cleaner should restock the toiletries. She asked “do you want this?” I asked if this was not normal in a 5-star hotel, superior room, that toiletries are not provided. She said it wasn’t and that we had to ask if we wanted them! OK, whether due to Covid or environmental reasons (she did not say), some prior notification would have been nice. I also mentioned robes and slippers and those had to be delivered separately too. The next day we thought we would try the spa/sauna as it is included in the price of our room (note, in standard and comfort rooms you have to pay 16 Euros….) After the long hike (it is in a separate building and you take 2 elevators. Not a bad walk but long-ish) we found ourselves in the largest gym I have ever seen. This is NOT your typical hotel sauna/spa area with plinky plonky music, dim lighting, nice aromas. This is a German, sterile gym for serious workouts and swimming. The relaxation area was dark, basementy and generally not conducive to relaxation. On that day, the whole area really smelt of sewage. Plus it costs 16 Euros for most guests. Upon check-out they tried to charge us for usage of the sauna, even though it was included in the price of the room. To summarise: The location is amazing, the rooms are huge and the price was reasonable but communication between staff and guests was terrible. They are all nice and polite, that is not the issue, but the lack of information on basic things from the staff and before we arrived was a big minus point for us. Had we been informed of ALL of this upfront, this hotel would be getting a much better review.…
Excellent hotel in central Cologne, very good, spacius rooms, comfy beds and excellent bathrooms, got a bargain via Snaptravel, and quiet during COVID times. Very good, well recommended.Didn't have breakfast or dinner there so cannot comment on that.
I booked a few nights here as a surprise for our anniversary. We were very much looking forward to visit after reading the positive reviews. Unfortunately due to Coronavirus we have been advised not to travel by our doctor. After trying to contact the hotel multiple times when I finally got through I was advised I could not cancel or rearrange. I am absolutely disgusted at their response. I will be asking for them to put it in writing that they are willing to take responsibility should anything happen whilst we are there. Ridiculous service won’t be booking again.
We come to Cologne every year to visit the Hardware Fare. The last few times we stayed in Dorint am Heumarkt and were satisfied. The location is great. But...this year, our partners canceled exhibiting at the Hardware fair at the last minute because of the coronavirus, and therefore we no longer had a reason to travel. the hotel had no understanding and was not willing to reduce the price even though we are regular guests and would surely come again. For cancelation, we paid almost the entire amount.
Very good location for old town and easy to get across to Kolnmesse if you are at a trade show. The room was of good size. Everything functional. My room was fine except very very hot despite having air con on lowest setting. Eventually worked out how to open the window which unfortunately looked over the main road which meant lots of noise and poor air quality. It’s got a good bar. A bit pricey but hotels are during trade shows. Will probably stay there again next year.
