If you want a standard cheap wood veneer interior hotel room full of plastic fittings and uniform layout, then don't stay here. Also if you want spotless bathrooms, excellent plumbing and pristine furnishings then don't stay here. The Water Tower was designed some decades ago by French interior designer Andree Putman and it shows, but that is definitely part of it's charm, the mezzanine bedrooms are truly unique and extremely spacious. The restaurant/bar on the top floor has an unrivalled 360 degrees view of Cologne not to be missed whilst staying. The location is great, round the corner from the underground and walking distance to bars and restaurants. It's the second time we've stayed here and although there was no free beer in the fridge this time round 😔 we'll definitely stay here again when in Cologne.

I would put this more into the 4 star business hotel category with regard to room amenities and services, with the views being the only 5 star experience here. We stayed on the 9th floor, which had balcony access and floor to ceiling windows- which make for great views anytime of day. The room had the basics, but lacked finer touches and services. For example- there’s an all-in-one body/hair gel for the bathroom. No conditioner. No lotion. No washcloths. Two standard towels. Two hand towels. Our towel warmer never seemed to get warm, so taking an evening shower means no dry towels in the morning. There’s a hairdryer- but no plug in front of the bathroom mirror- only next to the bed or desk. There is a restaurant on the ground floor and a bar on the 11th floor with balcony access- but it was reserved for a private party when we went up in the afternoon. There is a parking garage under the hotel, which no one mentioned would be a 26€ fee to park overnight until we checked out. It was a novelty to stay in for one night- but beyond the novelty, it didn’t feel comforting enough to encourage a longer stay.

Dear Annetics, thank you very much for choosing our hotel for your stay in Cologne and for sharing your experience with us. We also thank you for your honest and constructive words. We are constantly working to make our guests' stay a pleasant one, and your feedback helps us enormously. Since we are currently in the planning for a large-scale renovation, your advice is particularly valuable to us. So maybe you will come back to us after the renovation and we will get the chance to convince you to stay longer than just one night. Your Guest Service Team at the Hotel im Wasserturm

From one of Cologne best known boutique hotels, this one has lost all it’s charm and appeal with the recent change of ownership. Knowing that there was a change, I wanted to give it a try but I won’t come back anymore. There is practically now functional AC or heating in the room. The minibar (which was free before) has been completely removed. Housekeeping or room service is not available during daytime and don’t expect slippers or amenities. If you’re in need of anything you have to go downstairs to reception as they “don’t have enough staff”. Receptionist are not unfriendly but also not welcoming. That’s the best way to destroy and chase away proper customers. Never ever again. Sad. This hotel used to be my favourite over a decade. I would understand if they charge for the minibar or increase their prices but offering such a crappy service for an average price is really a downturn. Stay away from this hotel if you don’t want to ruin your mood. I am sure there will be the same idiotic management’s reply as for the other reviews. ;-)

These pretentious European boutique hotels are really starting to get me down. This is another one in the same depressingly familiar genre. The rooms and public areas are modern, therapeutic and pretty, as you’d expect, but when it comes to catering for basic human needs it’s a different matter. Low points here include: a bathroom tap that only dispenses hot water (great if you need to take medication); no effective barrier between the shower and the bathroom, so the bathroom floor gets flooded every time you try to use the shower: and poorly fitted floor to ceiling windows, meaning no effective sound insulation to keep out traffic noise from the neighbouring 24/7 freeway. Breakfast is served till 10am - theoretically - but when I went down at 9:40am I was made to feel unwelcome by staff already preoccupied with resetting the tables. I’m sorry my presence was an inconvenience, but at 20 euros a head walking in didn’t feel unreasonable at the time. City hotels in Europe were much better 25 years ago before the Internet introduced this modern obsession with surface gloss. Substance is more important than style, and pretty photos of public areas are not enough. Hotels exist to meet travellers’ needs, and as long as hotels like this continue to neglect them they will attract negative reviews.

I loved the architecture of this building. The staff was friendly. We had a suite over two levels, a lovely interior, comfortable bed, perfect if one of you needs to do some work on the desk or wants to receive visitors and have a meeting. The round windows are a charming detail and the view from the rooftop and restaurant over the city is breathtaking. It is definitely a unique setting to explore the city from. It's close to the city center
