Stayed here for 2 nights and the location was great as it was right at the main train station and I can see the church which is just steps away from the room. The room though small is just adequate for 1 person. It is clean and pretty comfortable. Didn't include breakfast in my booking since there are some of bakeries in the train station. A good base for sightseeing in the city.
5 stars within its 2 star category. This hotel is actually built into Cologne’s Main Station, and so is extremely convenient for an overnight stop between train connections. With Ibis you know what you are getting - a clean, comfortable room, a good bathroom, Wifi, and a most acceptable breakfast. (In Germany and France, that is. General room standards less reliable in the UK.) Covid19 restrictions meant booking a breakfast slot when checking in, and instead of the usual buffet, a selection of breakfast items was brought on a tray to your table. I must complement the breakfast waitress for her warm welcome, cheerfulness, and swiftness in providing refills of coffee and juice! In short, if you need an overnight stop in Cologne, look no further than the Ibis at the Hauptbahnhof! eliensis…
I thought this would never happen, I have to complain about my stay at this Ibis. Although the location and rooms were perfect as usual, the service was so to say no service at all. Desk officers were not really aware of the booking's details, they couldn't help us about parking and smile was completely absent from their faces. The only friendly staff was the waitress speeding up on her own to help people at breakfast. Sad!
The hotel has direct access to the main train station, so you're right in the heart of Cologne. Our room looked out onto the plaza and the Dom. The room is rather thrifty but we arrived late and left early both days. The very good rating is based on the location, room rate, and our room's view of the Dom. My only negative is that I suspect that one of their clerks attempted a European quick change scheme with me-- when getting change back, they count out 1 Euro coins as the 2 Euro coin thinking the stupid foreigner isn't familiar with the coins. The other clerks were friendly and helpful.
We travel by train a lot in the EU. In Koln, we always use this hotel as you do not even have to leave the stn - an entrance is right under platform one (you have to ring the bell to get the door to open). Right next to the Dom, close to all the shops, restaurants etc etc it is a bit of a nugget to be honest. When we first stayed years ago, I wrote "Was Wary" - but, have no doubt, this hotel is clean, secure and has excellent staff who know their stuff. B/fast is very good by Ibis standards and well run. Of note, rooms on floors 1 to 3 have a view of the Dom (if you stretch your neck!), four... does not! Bottom line - use this hotel - esp if you are traveling by train.
