The center of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given
way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighborhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.

We took a taxi but the info on public transport is here:-
The airport is situated 18 km from the city centre, to the south-east of the city. It is mostly used by charter and low cost airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, UP and Norwegian Air Shuttle. But also major carrier Aeroflot and TAP Portugal go there.

You may make as many stops or transfers as you like during the two-hour period of validity, however, the ticket is not valid for return or round trips. Make sure you validate your ticket! Make sure you validate your ticket on the platform (little tiny red machine which puts a time stamp on your ticket to validate it) or in the bus (same type of machine, but yellow/ white), if you have not bought it from the bus driver.
For all options please read the FAQ -> Where can I buy tickets. There are also ticket machines in front of Terminals A and B and on the platforms. VBB and BVG ticket machines accept Maestro debit cards, DB ticket machines also take Visa and Mastercards. If paying in the bus, only cash will be accepted by the driver.

RE 7 and RB 14 (Airport Express)
From Schoenefeld, the fastest way to get to the city centre (stations Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstrasse, Hauptbahnhof, Zoologischer Garten or Charlottenburg) is, taking the Airport Express. The Airport Express is a regional train service of lines RE 7 (bound for Dessau) or RB 14 (bound for Nauen), operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB). Trains leave every 30 minutes from Flughafen Berlin-Schoenefeld station which is in walking distance from the airport terminal. There is covered walkway to the left upon exiting the building which takes you directly to the station.
There are also two S-Bahn (urban rail) lines which terminate at Schoenefeld station. It will usually take you longer to get into the city since these trains make quite a few en-route stops. S-Bahn operates all night on Friday and Saturday nights.
There is a timetable for weekdays, timetable for the weekend & holidays and U-Bahn and S-Bahn map available for download.
S45 trains (bound for Bundesplatz ) connect to S41/ S42 which are city-circle trains.
S9 trains (bound for Pankow ) run via Ostkreuz and Prenzlauer Alee. If you are travelling to or from Mitte, you will have to change for S5, S7 or S75 at Ostkreuz.
Bus and underground
Bus X7 (bound for U Rudow ) and bus 171 (bound for U Hermannplatz with lines U7 and U8) take you to Rudow underground station which is the terminus of underground line U7. Use this connection, if you want to go to Neukoelln or Kreuzberg.
At night night bus N7 operates between Schoenefeld Airport and U Rudow. At the weekend you can connect to underground line U7 there (Friday and Saturday night only). Within the week continue to use this underground replacement night bus service (N7 continued from Sunday to Thursday night).
