Upsides: Freiburg's a lovely city. This hotel's well-located within the old town. Most sights are within walking distance and the tram will get you further afield. Plenty of good restaurants and bars down atmospheric side streets. The hotel staff are enthusiastic and the restaurant has good food and service. Downsides: Clearly there's a range of rooms here. I was here...

I stayed at Zum Roten Bären for one week. The location is perfect, at the heart of historical downtown Freiburg, with excellent connections to public transportation (Tram line 1 in front of the Hotel, and all other Tram lines within 300 meters). The hotel truly is a Gem. The oldest hotel or (Gasthaus) in Germany, it conserves its style dating...

The nearest airport is about an hour away (Basel-Mullhouse-Freiburg). Zum Roten Baeren literally means "for red bear" and certainly the motif is consistent, from the landbark gold bear at the doorstep, to the lobby, your room keyholder, the carpet in the hallways, the dining area's backrest, even the butter's shape. The conference organizers swear by the hotel being the oldest...

We stayed in this hotel in 1981 and, as we planned to be in Freiburg again, we thought we would visit it again. We weren't disappointed. It has a great location in the town centre - and there's a convenient carpark on the edge of the old part of thr town. The hotel itself is old-fashioned in a nice way....

A very warm welcome awaits at Roten Baeren and an amazing breakfast. Like the previous reviewer, we stayed during a heatwave and really could have done with aircon, although we'd been provided with a giant fan which was nice. Our room was of interesting dimensions, being long and narrow and the bed part separated from the bathroom part by a...

The best of this hotel was a great location in the old town and a very friendly staff. That said, it has serious downsides. Our main problem was visiting during a heatwave, being given a room that faced south so heated up a lot during the day, and had no air conditioning (despite a TA review that said it had...

I am a person that appreciates historical buildings, so if I see a wonderful facade such as the one that this hotel has, and read that is the oldest hotel in Germany, I just assume that it is going to be just great inside. Well, it is very far from it. As soon as you enter you notice that this...

We stayed here for four nights this is a nice hotel with lots of history. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The WiFi connection works in communal areas, although we had trouble connecting during our stay. Good location with easy walking distance to local restaurants and shops.

We chose this hotel because of its location and history. The room was a little "tied" but acceptable. I agree with other reviewers it has a very 1980's feel. The staff were good with excellent English. Breakfast was good.

We stayed one night in this lovely hotel, having booked very last minute, we got a great deal on suite 21. An old fashioned hotel in almost every way, wonderful service from a glass of sparkling wine on arrival. Our suite was very large, with two big windows looking out onto the main street outside, and a massive round shower...
