#3 of 12 hotels in St-Paul-de-Vence
Villa St. Maxime was designed and built as an intimate, luxury Hotel - Villa d'Hotes. The Villa is a short walk from the village of St Paul and also the famous Maeght Foundation, it is in fact the closest hotel in St Paul to the village, with the convenience of not being within the walls for easy access and parking. The Villa is very much a modern work of art itself: it is constructed of albinic Provencal stone sculpted in bold sweeping lines. The Villa enjoys an airy modern feel, while retaining a comfortable and intimate ambience, with great views of the village and the sea. The suites and rooms have luxury appointments, ensuite facilities. A Champagne breakfast, including freshly cooked eggs, and evening aperitifs are included in the room rate.

Our room was spacious, impeccably clean with comfy beds and a breathtaking view from the balcony. Villa St. Maxime offered beautiful spaces for quiet leisure, a cooked-to-order breakfast of many delicious choices and a happy hour that provided opportunity to connect with other guests. Ann and John cordially welcomed us and remained attentive to our comfort throughout our stay. Their wealth of knowledge of the area was extremely helpful to us. The surrounding natural beauty, the charm of the nearby villages and the magic of the Villa, all added up to a week of enchanting perfection!!!

VStM is a very small bed & breakfast owned by an expat American and her French husband. It is perfectly located on a hill just about a 5 minute walk west of St. Paul de Vence with lovely views of the village and with pretty views of the Mediterranean and Cap Antibes in the distance straight ahead. We liked it, and Ann (owner) is extremely pleasant and helpful. It has some design quirks but overall is a very good choice. "+" is a positive; "--" is a negative Location ++ perfect; 5 minute walk to St. Paul de Vence; 40 minute drive to Nice. We drove to the Nice airport from here the day of our departure flight. 15 min drive up to Vence. + quiet; surrounded by shrubbery so no street noise + excellent views of SPdV, especially when lit up at night Hotel + parking in the back; very tight + spacious open areas; this is a home that has been turned into a B&B + entrance is in the back off the parking lot; door is open all day and locked at night; you will have a key + breakfast is on the patio overlooking the pool for lovely views. -- breakfast is rather spare in choices, including only one mini baguette for each table regardless of the number of people. If you ask for a second mini baguette for additional people, you will not be granted any more than the first one. -- we read reviews about a "happy hour" but since this is a very small B&B, it's more a very small number of people sharing a glass of wine than an evening pre dinner reception, which is fine. Room + defintely splurge for the large suite with the double sized balcony - StPdV has no nightlife at all so we found that sitting on the balcony with some champagne and admiring the amazing views was a wonderful nightlife alone. + spacious + / - decent storage in armoire and closet, although armoire is dusty -- sheets are old and tired; bed is a bit too old and soft -- no luggage racks; only space for suitcases is in the bathroom and the living room on the floor -- dark ++ great living room area with bright light and sliding glass doors onto balcony for great view Bathroom I + very very large; larger than the bedroom. Two sinks -- toilet cubicle has no door -- jacuzzi tub is a bit worse for wear looking so we did not use -------- BIG NEGATIVE -- the shower is incredibly quirky in design. It is large and yet there is no showerhead. There are weak shower jets that come out from various sides of the walls so it's like being sprayed with a sprinkler not a shower head. It is incredbily difficult to take a shower and to wash your hair and feel clean. Water sprays everywhere except on you. -- lighting is very dim

Response from az-france, Owner at Villa St Maxime

Thanks for overall commenting it’s a ‘very good choice’. We would like to comment though: - There are luggage racks in the rooms, and in the suite you had, there are also two benches that can be used for your luggage. - We do arrange for one baguette for every two people, plus the croissants and pain chocolate. And you can have more bread – we bake all pastries on site so there may require a brief interval. The server at breakfast should have offered this and provide extra bread on following days of your stay – we will be sure this is understood by the staff. - There is a door to the bathroom. There are 4 windows and 9 light fixtures in the bathroom – we were surprised you thought this was dark. - The shower heads are being redone this winter.

Such a lovely place to visit and fun place to stay in the heart of Provence. We were here a little later in the season, after the children were in school, the weather a tad cooler and found the area to be so delightful. We liked the easy atmosphere of the Villa with scrumptious breakfasts and light Happy Hours. We learned a lot from other tourists and the owners about where to go and what to see on our short trip. We found the rooms so comfortable,. The establishment and grounds were very large and beautiful. We found plenty of private spaces to relax when we wanted to just chill. Our days were filled with hikes around the town or short drives to various charming villages. An afternoon glass of wine at a sidewalk cafe, was always a hit with us. Almost everyone spoke English, so our limited French was not a problem. Being later in the season, there were some great buys in St. Paul. The colorful market in Nice, was also a treat. Between the lovely Villa and the proximity of St. Paul by foot, the vacation was perfect for us.

Our favorite part of this hotel was the full length sliding glass doors across the entire back of our suite showing the amazing views of the grounds the pool and the French Riveria. It was a perfect base for our trip to the see all the French Riveria has to offer. Our hotel room was very private, and with only a few hotel rooms on the property it was very quiet and intimate. Having the option to go to the common areas and join others for breakfast (best eggs I have every had) or happy hour in the evening made the stay even more enjoyable. One happy hour my husband was invited to cut off the top of a champagne bottle with a sabre (after a full training by John, our host) and then champagne for all. Unforgettable. See attached pics. The closest restuarant (walking distance) was so good we went 3 of the nights we were there. The risotto, pizza and creme bulee were so amazing we couldn't resist. We were able to walk to the village of St Paule de Vence and with the Villa St Maxime as our base, we were able to see Nice, Cannes, Vance, Monte Carlo, Antibes and more. The train and Uber worked great for every where we wanted to go.

I love the location and the setting. The owners were so nice and easy going. It was a joy to visit this establishment. The breakfasts were over the top with scrumptious egg treats, yogurt/fruit, coffee, champagne and whatever..... I did not do that much when I was there as the day just kind of unfolded in all kinds of entertaining directions. Breakfast took a good deal of time, because it was so relaxing and fun to lounge on the patio. I liked talking to the various guests to see what they had planned. Then I would walk around town, or drive to some other charming village. The days flew and "Happy Hour" at the Villa I found quite amusing, then off to dinner. The rooms were nicely appointed. The building and grounds were well done. Being able to walk to town in a matter of minutes, was perfect for me. On this trip I even tried my luck at the local game of Petanque (Similar to Bocce Ball) in the town square. Such fun! The other reviewers were right, this is a bed and breakfast, but it has a charm and warmth that I find irresistible. Simply a wonderful visit!
