Two weeks ago we went with friends on spec for lunch. We sat in the courtyard and enjoyed a truly memorable lunch. Refined tasty utterly superb. Service was great and wine excellent. It was so good we decided to take some other friends the following week. This time however we made the mistake of booking. My daughter (fluent in French) made the booking which I had asked to be outside. However we were actually booked in the Terrasse (an associated but separate bar dining area on the roof of an adjacent building). From there on in it was downhill. We eventually got to sit in the courtyard but seemed to fall between the bar staff and the restaurant staff. The previously excellent Maitre’D all but ignored us as did the sommelier. The amuse bouche we had previously did not appear, the service was lamentably slow. Such a shame because our first experience was superb and we had happy memories from when we stayed here fir my 60th.

After more than a dozen years of experience, Hotel d’Europe feels like home. It may not be the best value in Avignon but it is the best place to stay. The staff are friendly, helpful and always available. Rooms are clean, well-appointed and comfortable. The terrace in front of the reception area in warm weather is the best place for a drink or a light meal and, while other places in Avignon may be cheaper, none offer the ambiance or sheer enjoyment of this courtyard.

When we arrived from the train station by cab, someone claiming to be hotel staff grabbed our luggage and headed into the lobby. He did not have a uniform so I was skeptical. It turned out he was a local drunk from the bar across the street. A bellman and my husband pried the luggage away from him. We checked in and were "upgraded" to a larger room. Hey that sounded great. We got to the room and it smelled very musty. The room only had sheer drapes with semi open shutters. The room was decorated in very drab colors and the door lock was difficult to use. We were so tired that we did not make a fuss about that and just wanted to get a good night's rest. We were awakened early due to lack of solid drapery. Breakfast was included but no eggs except hard boiled were on the buffet. The next night there was lots of noise until about 3am from the bar across the street. And to top that off, the handle of the sink hot water came off and the water kept running then leaked onto bathroom floor. We called front desk and a bellman was sent to "fix" it. He turned the water off but did nothing about the wet floor. The next morning, we went to breakfast and tried to order eggs, 30 minutes later still no eggs. We had to just eat what was available on the buffet and leave for our planned visit to Papal Palace. When we checked out, the person did not ask about our stay and offered no compensation for the issues. I do not recommend this hotel. Find somewhere up to date and quieter if you want to enjoy Avignon.
