After booking this hotel for my partners birthday, for 2 nights €400, this payment was taken before we had arrived. Upon arrival our room was dirty, stained and musty smelling. Changed rooms and was still the same, looks nothing like the pictures on booking.com. Disgusting that this hotel has been rated 5*, doesn’t even have air conditioning or clean carpets. Building work was going on below us and all we could here was drilling and banging for the hour that we were there. We told reception that we were not staying here as it is nothing like advertised, they offered us a presidential suite, which was just as bad and dated. After a long discussion with reception and their ‘director’ he agrees that we would not be charged and the money would be refunded the next day as we did not choose to stay here (we booked another hotel). No refund has been given, I have rang reception more than 10 times, every time there is a different excuse as to why I can’t speak to the director, I have sent loads of emails and no reply. I have resorted to reporting this hotel for fraud to my bank, I just want my money back!!!! I didn’t even stay here! Be very wary before booking here, does not look anything like pictures and is definitely not a 5* hotel. Ruined our holiday, disgusting that they think they can treat customers like this

A disappointing hotel as we had expected more as it is marketed as 5 star. First impressions were good and the downstairs is exceptional but there is a lack of detail and quality across the hotel, in the rooms, in the corridors, on the stairs, that says shabby, not looked after, little attention to detail and really quite ordinary. Its nice, dont get me wrong, but it isnt 5 star. At best 3.

Had an overnight stay at this hotel last week and very disappointed . At best 3 star . Bedroom and bathroom were dirty, the carpets stained and the bed mattress was well past its sell by date as it sagged so badly in the middle you were actually sleeping on an incline !!! Breakfast was also pretty underwhelming the hot part consisting of burnt bacon or lumpy scrambled egg which i think had been sitting there for hours . Also we had workmen start work outside our bedroom first thing in the morning Shame really as the building was nice and they have the infrastructure to create something really good but its going to take large investment and whole change in policy for it to happen . We won't be returning !!

My boyfriend and I stayed 3 nights at the Residence de France last weekend. We had a lovely time - we booked with Secret Escapes and as there seemed to be a bug with the platform and the hotel had not received the booking, we were upgraded! This made our stay - we had a terrace suite which was more than enough room! Two bedrooms, two bathrooms (2 showers and a tub!) and a sitting area. The decor was simple and chic enough, although if I had to grumble, I would say that the hotel probably does need a little refurb (a lick of paint here and there wouldn't go amiss). The suite was very nice, and the front part of the hotel (where you enter, and visible from the street) is lovely - pale, old fashioned stone and period features. However there is a second section of the hotel, behind the parking courtyard and pool area which seems more modern (and a little less slick). Although clean and tidy, I think the building itself could do with an update to maintain the otherwise lovely period atmosphere of the hotel. I did not see the rooms (basic/deluxe?) in this section however, so I cannot comment on the quality of them. The downstairs bar and lounge area is lovely (big comfy white sofas and armchairs and a beautiful fireplace and black piano). Perfect for having a late night drink and chatting with friends. The pool is small but cute and I imagine is perfect in the hot summer months (it was a little too cold for us to have a dip). The breakfast is good, with a wide range of hot and cold items, which all seem nice quality. Tables are nicely laid and staff replenish the food and clear tables efficiently. Lastly, the staff are very helpful, professional and courteous (we were helped by the front desk staff, the barman and the staff at the breakfast buffet). It was a pleasure to stay here and I would recommend.

We had stayed at this Hotel in the heart of La Rochelle last year and enjoyed it so much that we decided to return this year, despite it being expensive. When we arrived at the Hotel, we were dismayed to find that a number of things were not as we expected. Firstly, we had reserved parking for two cars, but they had no record of it. Secondly, our friends room stank of stale cigarette smoke, despite it being a non smoking hotel. Thirdly, we discovered that the default code for the safe had not been changed by the hotel, meaning they were insecure, we checked with our friends and their safe was the same. I went to reception to complain and we were offered different rooms and we found that the safes in those rooms were exactly the same giving us reason to suspect that none of the safes in the hotel had had their default codes changed. Despite e-mailing the Hotel Management directly regarding the safe situation we have not received a reply. If you are staying at this hotel, I would recommend that you do not put any valuables in the safe.
