We have stayed at the San Regis perhaps four times over the last 30 years. We have enjoyed it every time. To us, in a word (or two), it is the quintessential French luxury boutique hotel. Yes, it is compact, with but 42 rooms. That said, it is a small beauty. On our first visit, circa 1990, it was a 4* hotel. For us, it was love at first sight. We were with another couple, and shared a nice suite. Yes, the sitting room was small, but comfortable for four of us. The elevator is classic. With the four of us, once inside, fortunately, we were “close” friends. Or at least we were by the time we got off. We still laugh at the memory. Think four-ample sized adults in a pre-cell phone telephone booth. On our most recent trip, we were a party of six, so we took the elevator in two shifts. LOL. In the process of the upgrade of the hotel from category 4* to 5*, there seems to have been a significant renovation (I say “seems,” but 30 years ago is a challenge to my now senior-level memory.) In any case, the two-bedroom suite we occupied with another couple on this visit was a gem, spotlessly clean and classically furnished in a traditional French manner. A tip: yes, as noted in another review, the air conditioning struggles during warm weather to keep a cool room for sleeping at night. Considering the building is perhaps 100 years old, this is not shocking. That said, we found it curious that the bedding included a heavy comforter without a separate top sheet under the comforter. At night, it was too warm with the comforter, and too cool with it pulled back and nothing over us. The staff was kind enough change out the heavy comforter the next day for a light blanket, but even then, it was enclosed inside the pocket of a double sheet, still too warm for the summer weather we experienced. A single sheet between the bottom sheet and the comforter would have allowed for good sleeping under just a single sheet had we had asked, but now we were checking out to continue our journey. All-in-all, the San Regis is a great choice. Understand that this is not the Georges VI (where we’ve stayed when we have wanted that $$$$$ experience), but the San Regis is the small gem that succeeds as a luxury boutique accommodation with a great location in a wonderful city. …
