One of the most original hotel in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Bejart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness.

Like a trip "down the rabbit hole," I loved my stay at Hotel Esmeralda. I was a solo female travelling in the summer. The front desk staff were so kind to me. The man helped me carry my suitcase all the way to the top floor when I arrived late at night. I had room 17 on the topmost floor with a beautiful view of Notre Dame and the Square. The rooms are "bare bones" with flea-market quality furnishings. However---this "patina" is what gives the ancient hotel its charm. The creaky spiral staircase and stone walls are original and I actually loved climbing the 4 stories to my room every day, thinking about all who had stayed there before me. I arrived the day after Jane Birkin passed away and the front desk showed me a picture of her at Hotel Esmeralda from "back in the day" and told me how proud they were that she and Serge had once stayed there. All-in-all, it's the most unique hotel in Paris with the most beautiful view. IT IS SO NOT THE RITZ--but that is the whole point.

Hotel's Favorite
A day in Central Paris, very hot for the time of year and my morning coffee shot much needed. This restaurant had ample outside seating, we were early enough for it not yet to be too busy, and we were able to find a shaded outdoor table. Service was efficient and friendly and at the waiter's suggestion we added croissant to our coffee order. Good move! The crispiest, lightest croissant I have had. Just excellent. Why can we not bake them like that? We didn't have a meal here but the menu looked very interesting. Maybe next visit.

We didn't stay here, but asked the front desk for help with something we needed. They were amazingly kind and helpful. We just wanted to leave a positive review about how wonderful the front desk workers were. Thank you so much!

The only good thing about this hotel is the location and the friendly front desk person. Nothing else. Rooms are small, beds are small, narrow stairs, no air conditioning, no tv, no coffee. Next time I will definitely stay somewhere else.

Hotel is in an excellent area, many restaurants to choose from within walking distance, one block from Notre Dame. If you want to sacrifice comfort for location and are not too old this place is for you. There is no elevator so be ready to take your suitcase up a winding staircase. If you are tall watch out for the doors, no air conditioning, only small fan, no safe deposit box, rooms are small so is toilet area. Personnel at reception extremely nice and helpful.

When the hotel closed for the pandemic, we were told our names would be kept and our booking would be honoured when they reopened. We tried many times to contact them but were ignored. Finally when we put a review on here they replied on here. We emailed them and they said to let them know what new dates we would like so we did - three times over the last few weeks and again no reply at all. I had deleted my original review as a gesture of goodwill but clearly it’s all just show and they have no intention of making the booking. We very much appreciated and were impressed with the original offer to allow a rebooking but are probably now too late to even claim on our insurance - if they had just been upfront in the first place it would have been better than this farce as they clearly have no intention to honour the offer they made two years’ ago.

I had a booking for this hotel, paid in advance but the hotel has now been closed for some time. I have been trying to get my money refunded but they don't respond to messages. They've basically just taken my money for nothing.

Response from Alain BESSIERE, Directeur général at Esmeralda Hotel
Responded Jan 3, 2022
Dear Sir, I am so sorry that you could not arrange yet for a rebooking. This is very strange indeed. A voucher shall be honored even though this voucher was obtained due to the pandemic as a compensation for a nonrefundable reservation . It was very honest on our side to convert a nonrefundable to a voucher for a future stay. The hotel was closed from March, 15th,2020 until September 26,2021. It is now operating again. Please, contact us by email at hotel.esmeralda@orange.fr, and everything shall be in good order for your stay with us. But, hurry up to do so, for Omicron we could close again in the next few days, and delay to another reopening your booking. Yours truly. Alain Bessière

Old and quirky hotel, ideal for Notre Dame and St Chapel le just across the bridge, and great for exploring the Latin Quarter and St German des Pres bars and restaurants. Like anywhere in central Paris the traffic noise is a constant but no more so then any major European city. The hotel staff are friendly and very welcoming with plenty of recommendations for sites, eating and drinking, just ask! No breakfast at the hotel but there are so many cafes within 10 mins walk, you are spoilt for choice. The room we had was brilliantly quirky and just the ticket for our needs.

My daughter and I have recently stayed in Paris for 5 days at the Hôtel Esmeralda and wish it had been for much longer. The room was snug and warm with comfy clean beds and staff even helped with luggage on the stairs. We asked for a 3 person room as we like our space. It’s a charming hotel full of atmosphere, history and the best staff. All staff gave wonderful suggestions for meals etc along with helpful advice on getting around, things to see. We’ll certainly stay again and for longer.
