As students travelling on the budget we couldn't believe our luck when we opened the door to our room! I am not sure if we got an upgrade or not but it was absolutely incredible. Both the bedroom and bathroom had massive windows which had breathtaking views and could see the Eiffel tower! The room was nice, a bit on the small side however all you need for 2 people. The bathroom was big. The internet was good. The location was in a local neighborhood which meant that a lot of restaurant and bar workers actually didn't speak much English however this added to the experience. It was very handy to the metro stations however walk able distance to many touristy places we wanted to see. It was also a few buildings down from a supermarket so we were able to get bread and wine easily every night. The workers at reception were also fantastic, very friendly and greeted us with a massive smile whenever we walked in the door. They were very personable and we were very impressed at their work ethic. Would absolutely recommend staying here if you don't mind staying a little bit out of the touristy areas.

My host organisation booked me the second time in this hotel. Given the choice I would have gone somewhere else. The hotel is not quite that bad. Location is excellent. Room and hotel is clean and no smell. Relatively modern decor and breakfast ist decend. Wifi is good. The classic (cheapest) rooms however very small- 12sqm or so (and that certainly includes the bathroom) - too small to my taste, although some probably won't mind. Main problem for me is the noise and also the service attitude. The room faces a very busy street. I asked for an upgrade to a larger room and was ready to pay for it but was told nothin is available - I checked online and a larger room was available for my entire stay at a reasonable price. Probably the person at the frontdesk didn't want to deal with the extra work of rebooking my room. Given the noise problem I didn't want to open the window during the night so I checked out the A/C - but it was not working or turned off. I inquired at the front desk and got treated with a shrugg.

The room was clean and location was very good. The bed was sufficient big for two persons. The reception was helpful and kind. The old carpet in the corridor smells not so nice. the noice isolation was sufficiently good.

We've now stayed at Grand Hotel des Gobelins four times since we first discovered it in 2006, and it has become an essential part of the magical Paris experience. Over the years, the level of hospitality has increased and it couldn't be more friendly and welcoming. As part of the explosion of English-speaking all over the city, the front desk staff are more perfectly bilingual than ever, and all staff members seem eager to offer at least a few friendly words of English. The rooms are small, typical of European hotels, but by now we know how to make the best use of the space by stashing one suitcase in a nook until we need it again. One important new feature for caffeine fiends is a snazzy burner to heat up a pot of water for instant coffee. This allowed us to coffee up even before the excellent breakfast, which is included if you make reservations through the hotel's website. And this visit, we needed a bathroom that could accommodate arthritis, and were provided with a roomy bathroom with a spacious shower stall. There's a metro stop right down the street and around the corner, and this has always been a plus for us. And as an important practicality - at least if you come for two weeks from as far away as we do - there is a laundromat five minutes away where more friendly Parisians are happy to help with navigating the daunting process. Most importantly, the hotel is in a lovely, typical Parisian neighborhood full of day-to-day people going about their daily lives and enjoying lunch and dinner in numerous area cafes. The hotel is also centrally located for access to the best of Paris, and many attractions are accessible on foot for people who love walking. For history buffs, we recommend nearby Rue Mouffetard and Place Contrescarpe, in one of the most ancient parts of Paris. Rue Mouffetard was originally part of a major Roman road, and many of its little restaurants feature old stone walls and heavy wood beams. For literary mavens, it's noteworthy that Hemingway lived in the area and walked these streets in the early 1920s, and even references Place Contrescarpe in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." All of this makes Grand Hotel des Gobelins the perfect place for us when visiting Paris, and we hope to return again and again. we know Jean Marc and the rest of the staff will be there to make the stay a pleasure.

We chose this hotel as it had luggage storage so that we could store a bag while we were walking the GR65 for a few weeks and it was close to Gare d'Austerlitz where we have to get an early morning train. We also enjoyed the location as it was off the main Paris tourist areas and reasonably quiet while still being close to some restaurants and bars. We still walked to many places but it had a metro station close by if needed. The staff here speak very good English are very helpful and friendly. Great breakfast, however the breakfast room can get a bit crowed. I would definitely stay here again if I come back to Paris.
