Fronted by the majestic architecture of Ange-Jacques Gabriel, Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel overlooks the spectacular Place de la Concorde, one of the most beautiful city squares in the world. Built at Louis XV’s request, the hotel became the residence of the illustrious Count de Crillon and his family for many years and was transformed into a hotel in 1909 under the guidance of architect Walter-André Destailleur. Since then, its guest list has featured celebrities, politicians, artists, princes and queens, all attracted to the hotel’s unique and perennial reputation for excellence. Hôtel de Crillon has long since secured its iconic status as a one-of-a-kind property, a living testament to the very best way of life France has to offer. Following a four-year transformation, the Palace hotel opened in 2017 and now boasts 124 guestrooms and suites, four restaurants, a spa, a swimming pool, three heritage landmark salons for meetings and functions, and more.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This was our first visit to the property, based on a recommendation from a dear friend in Madrid.
The property is located adjacent to the Place de la Concorde in a superb location close to the main luxury shops but also many of the key museums.
Despite its palace status, it is quite unassuming and is one of the smaller top hotels with 120 rooms and suites.
As you enter the grand building, the reception is a discrete room with leather chairs and mahogany desks and you are greeted and welcomed in a very relaxing environment. We were fortunate that the suite was available and whilst the formalities were arranged, the room was ready. As it was our first visit we were given a tour of the hotel and this property feels a little more cosy and in some areas less grand, pompous than other palace properties.
The property has several inner courtyards which during the summer provide outdoor dining facilities but, thoughtfully, for the guests they are closed so that it does not become too noisy in the evenings.
The courtyards serve the Jardin D’Hiver and also the Nonos restaurant.
A quite pleasant feature of the hotel is that there are all ranges of culinary experience ranging from L’Ecrin, their Michelin restaurant, Jardin D’Hiver which has excellent food through to Nonos and finally Butterfly Patisserie.
This is quite agreeable as it allows guests to not only have fine dining but also to have more informal dining at the Butterfly Patisserie.
The Rooms
The hotel, although adjacent to the Place de la Concorde, has most of its rooms situated facing the inner courtyard or a very quiet side street.
Each room is decorated individually and even though it is part of the Rosewood, the hotel goes out of its way to ensure there is a little personal touch of authenticity in each of the rooms. In other words, you do not feel that you are part of a chain of hotels.
The higher floors have more light and airy experience and each of the rooms has a different décor so if you are a regular visitor you will probably have your favourite.
We were fortunate to be upgraded to a suite, which had a lovely marble bathroom, with a strong power shower and a very pleasant separate walk in wardrobe.
Quite noteworthy was the use of the luxury hanger maker, Toscanini, which very few hotels make use of.
The room was quiet, with a comfortable but firm bed, all the necessary technological arrangements and a separate, but discrete, coffee machine.
The suite itself overlooked the inner courtyard on the third floor which by day I could imagine would be slightly noisier during the summer with the atmosphere of the dining rooms on the ground floor.
The hotel was clear that these areas are closed in the evening to respect the guests’ privacy and quietness.
We are relatively new to the Rosewood Group, but understand that each property applies its own distinctive personal style and based upon our visits to date we very much look forward to our future bookings for the rest of the year.
We shall definitely return.

Hotel de Crillon If we could, we would give Hotel de Crillon 6 stars. Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived. The entire hotel is an architectural and design gem. You have check-in in a private room with the option of a welcome drink. Our room was ready on time, beautiful and clean. There is a coffee and tea set, minibar, fruit and sweets in the room. The bathroom had a wide range of toiletries with a very interesting design. We really appreciate the correct size of the bathrobes (smaller sizes) and the Dyson hairdryer. The bathroom has a small TV built into the mirror, so you can watch TV from the bathtub. During our stay, we also visited the wellness area, which has an incredible design. There is a steam sauna, a Finnish sauna, a swimming pool and relaxation chairs. Available is an extended range of toiletries in the dressing room. In the wellness area you will find many snacks in the form of fresh and dried fruit, tea, coffee, cereal bars, biscuits, water and lemonade. There is a staff by the pool who will take care of your comfort. We felt very good and had a great rest. We booked our stay with breakfast, which are in the iconic Jardin d' Hivre restaurant. There is a menu (not a buffet) from which you can choose whatever you like. The menu is extensive, including Benedict eggs, avocado toast, fresh orange juice. This restaurant also serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner in the form of tapas and desserts (you can read more about Jardin d'Hivre in our next review). During our stay, we also visited the beautiful Bar les Ambassadeurs (you can read more about the Bar in our next review), which belongs to the hotel. You can communicate with the staff via whats app the whole time, the service is very fast and all the employees are perfectly organized, which we have never seen anywhere else in such a form. We are frequent visitors to this hotel, and find it difficult to fault the overall experience of staying here. If any issues arise they are dealt with quickly with politeness and elegance. The wonderful location gives easy access to many of Paris’s major attractions, including shopping and sightseeing. The property is maintained to an extraordinarily high degree, and staff are consistently delightful to deal with. Having a swim in the gorgeous hotel pool is a must, as is having a drink in les Ambassadeurs, with its remarkably chic and historic interior. Unfortunately, the hotel still allows smoking in the internal courtyard, which detracts greatly from the breakfast and meal experiences. And there is also a smoking area just outside the front doors which allows smoke to enter the hotel and also the beautiful bar once again diminishing and cheapening the overall experience. (Let’s hope that the management will remedy this.) Despite this the Crillon is very highly reconvened.

For over 20 years, we stayed at the Hotel Ritz 95% of the time while in Paris almost every year. Though it is beautiful and iconic, you would think somebody would know us over there by now. I usually see people constantly being scrutinized by security, wondering whether they belong there or not. I convinced my husband to finally try a new hotel. After many referrals, we decided to try Hotel de Crillon. It was the best move we’ve ever made! Though there is plenty of security, guests feel welcome and appreciated. The same goes for the friendly in-room dining staff and bellmen. We thoroughly enjoyed our champagne and caviar while listening to a wonderful female band at their elegant bar, Les Ambassadeurs. The lobby allows for both privacy and comfort, with an artist’s work showcased (I think I saw this artist featured at Art Basel in Miami this past December - Daniel Arsham?). Our room was perfect…the most comfortable bed and luxurious sheets, a beautiful box containing specially wrapped toiletries, the large bottles of Evian or Vittel water by the bedside, and our delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. The housekeeping staff need to be applauded because they pay attention to every detail. My sink was draining slowly, but I was too tired to complain. I was wondering if the housekeeper would catch it, and after the first cleaning, it drained perfectly. I left my personal toiletries in the corner of the sink, and the housekeeper lined them up perfectly from tallest to shortest, with labels facing forward. While waiting for our taxi, the doorman brought us to a lovely quiet area where we could have a drink if we wanted while waiting for our taxi just five minutes away. The Hotel de Crillon is a most beautiful and exquisite place to stay, providing six-star service, if there was such a rating. Bravo, Hotel Crillon! Well done!

As someone with a deep appreciation for the little things, this hotel had me grinning from ear to ear. I recently spent 4 nights at the Hotel de Crillon in a Grand Premier Suite. This is the best room category before you get to the named suites. While the suite was very pretty, it was quite tiny. I was in Paris several times during this trip and on other occasions stayed at the Plaza Athenee and The Ritz, all at similar price points. The Crillon accommodations were not on a par with either of these hotels; in both cases the suites were considerably larger.
It was the hotel's pettiness in other small things that really got to me. As we all know, the hotel industry's latest rage is to pretend to be ecologically conscious and generally ask the guest to place a card on the bed if a sheet change is not required. We know that this is a flagrant attempt to save money, the environment be damned. At the Crillon, the guest must place the card on the bed in order to have the sheets changed. Who can remember to place a card on the bed when they are racing out to see all that is Paris? Remember, we're talking about a suite in the range of 3,600 Euros per night. Another tiny but annoying matter was turndown service. The night maid would come in and remove all of the dirty towels, but not replace them with new clean ones; that appeared to be the job of the day maids.
On a high point, the L'Ecrin restaurant, a small space hidden inside the ground floor, is a gastronomic gem which will succeed despite its pretenses of creating a meal around the wine chosen. I am not partial to wine, but the food was excellent.
The Crillon was my late parents' hotel of choice in Paris, and it was mine as well in my younger days. Sadly, Rosewood has spent a lot of money on the place, but the dedication to hospitality appears to have gone. I won't be returning.

I was floored by the intense beauty of this hotel. They spared no expense. I came in for the Cake Boy Pop-Up of desserts. The confectionary treats were over the top and the small boutique room was beautifully decorated. This was such a special experience that I would highly recommend.

A childhood dream to stay in this storied architectural Parisian masterpiece. The Rosewood service added to this jewel made the experience perfect. The hotel, while respecting the historic heritage of the building, does have a welcome contemporary feel. When having breakfast, ask to be sitted in the magnificent bar room (I forgot the name) which is used for overflow. The regular breakfast room is gorgeous too and has great outside light, but that bar room is something else. We stayed in one of their smallest suite, the LR was on the small side but everything that was needed was there. View was on side street, with enough light. Oddly, the lighting in the entrance, dressing area, and even bathroom was very dimmed, by design it seemed. To the point that it was a tad difficult to pick the right clothes. Minor issues in the suite were solved promptly for the most part, so not worth mentioning them here. Swimming pool is a dream, albeit on the small side for a hotel of that category. Only slight shadow to this otherwise great stay: The hotel seems to often host foreign presidents and dignitaries, and when a huge crowd of people is allowed in the lobby, waiting to welcome their president, the staff of the hotel will ask you to step aside and find an alternate way to reach your room. That just didn't feel right. Yes that President was a guest, but none of his welcoming committee members were, so why should my son and I be denied our walk through the lobby... Small detail overall and to be fair, what are the chances... This was indeed a wonderful stay and we would not hesitate to come back if the opportunity presents itself again.
