I really like this hotel where I was staying for the 3rd time. In a city that, as beautiful as it is, is not always an example to follow in terms of service, the Hotel de l'Echiquier is on the contrary generally remarkable in this level.
Before my arrival, I contacted the hotel with my room preferences (having stayed twice before and one of the two rooms having much more pleased me than the other) and had a quick and effective response from the wonderful Laura who without making any promise managed to ideally prepare my stay.
The rooms are pretty and full of charm, styled even, the status ALL accor is recognized with discretion but warmth, the staff is friendly, and welcoming, and the practical location about twenty minutes walk from the Gare du Nord, about twenty minutes from the Louvre, and about ten from the Opera Garnier.
Although the hotel is a period building, the rooms are in excellent condition and everything works there. My category included a Nespresso coffee maker, a free mini bar (flat and soft water only), the bathroom offers quality Clarins products (large containers).
One of my favorite aspects of the hotel was also the cause of my only incident of stay. I had the memory that the breakfast was excellent and that it could be taken in the room so I booked it despite its high price (€28 per person). The breakfast is still as good, and you can always take it in the room without extra which is a real pleasure, but on the other hand, this part of the offer was completely unorganized. The first day, my breakfast arrived 20 minutes late and a coffee not even tied. On the second day, I had a train to catch and called the reception after 15 minutes of delay to explain that I was in a hurry. I was reassured, but more than 40 minutes after the order time indicated on my file, still nothing in sight and I had to leave to the station hungry. It is a shame to leave guests on a bad impression when this breakfast is and should be one of the highlights of the hotel!
Despite this hitch, I don't feel like lowering the "rating" of the hotel below the maximum because frankly, everything else is excellent, Laura and the reception team were great, the rooms and the location please me, and I cling to the hope that this little logistical concern will have been only an exception and that during my next stay, the good ratings of the hotel will always be as impressive and that the problems of breakfast will have been fixed so that I can enjoy it quietly in bed before going to work!

Unreserved recommendation. Hotel a little older but very clean and comfortable, in a good and quiet location.
Very good communication with the hotel before arrival. The hotel is located in a quiet side street in Paris, about 15 minutes walk from Gare de L'Est. Very friendly and prompt reception. Possibility of luggage storage. Room large (upgrade thanks to ALL-Platinum status), junior suite. Room clean but older. Chipped paint on doors and skirting boards, some stained wallpaper. Renovation in the next few years is recommended. Bathroom in the suite also large and similarly old, but clean. Bed very comfortable and very welcome after a 25 km walk. Details in the room such as a curtain in front of the room door (!) and stickers in the shower for orientation when changing the fittings very useful and welcome. Room facing the inner courtyard, absolutely quiet. Breakfast buffet in the morning was plentiful and up to standard without any complaints. Goute in the afternoon (included) with small baked sweets and various waters. Coffee & tea on request. Check-out was also uncomplicated and quick.

100% reccomend. Great service from all, staff are happy to work there and this comes across. Nobody waits for things to be done, staff are attentative and want guests to have all they need to ensure a pleasant stay. The rooms were immaculate. My sister contacted the hotel ahead, as it was our anniversary. We were upgraded to a deluxe room which was huge especially in Paris but even for UK standards the room was huge. Free minibar of soft drinks, and would be replenished when asked. Room service was sampled and was lovely! And no extra tray charge. Clarins products through which smell amazing and when you get back to your room you can smell the quality throughout the room from the shower product. I would 100% reccomend this hotel. We caught ubers and bolts everywhere so unsure on public transport.

My wife and I stayed in November 2023 for about four days. From the time we walked in the front door we were made to feel very welcome. Our stay was also a late celebration for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. The gentleman who checked us in was very welcoming and explained all we needed to know about the hotel and its facilities and nearby dining, transport and tourist attractions. When we walked into our room we were met with a welcome message from the hotel and balloons with the hotel name on them and a small plate of sweets. Things like this make your stay just that little bit extra special. The hotel's best asset was the staff. They were always happy to talk with us about where we were from. What we'd seen since being in Paris, and asking us about Australia, our home country. Obviously this hotel is an upmarket property, but the service we received was well worth it.

The welcoming attention at the hotel we went with the crowded family was very nice, quiet and immaculately clean. With small rooms, there''s everything neat and basic. The breakfast is small and subtle, quality tasty...The staff is always friendly and helpful...The location is very close to the most important areas to visit and very good...I highly recommend...

Location suitable for making getaways in several areas of Paris and close to the stations of East and North. Very welcoming and pleasant staff, with a very good level of service. Quality breakfast in a beautiful environment. Disappointment on the location of the room, with views of the street and in particular facade works just opposite on Saturday morning, with noise and plunging views of the room! This is especially with our GOLD status which was not taken into account for the location of the room in the hotel and without upgrade proposed. Rooms a little tired and disappointment with toilet in the bathroom for a MGALLERY!

MGallery L Echiquier was a nice surprise : an hotel with a parisian atmosphere where you feel immediately welcome thanks to a competent staff. Bar/Breakfast room is full of charm, with quality products. Rooms are comfortable, with big bathrooms (not the traditional tiny shower room you have in plenty of hotels in paris). All in all, very good experience to reiter (two streets from there, plenty of restaurants ...).

What a good compliment for our staff, I will share it with the entire team as it is what we strive for everyday :) Our Front-Office team is a specialist of the best restaurant in the area as we are in the heart of the Grands Boulevards, a lively area ! But not as nice as our own restaurant :) We already look forward to welcoming you back soon ! Warm regards, Constance - Executive Assistant Manager

I went with my sister who'd never been to Paris before and we stayed in the Junior Suite. The living area was slightly smaller than expected based on the pictures but it had 2 bathrooms which was very convenient. The room was comfortable and clean. The housekeeping side was good as the complimentary drinks and coffee were re-stocked every day during our 3 night stay. The art deco style of the hotel was lovely. Also the surrounding area was great for cafes and places to eat. The only real negative was an admin error by front of house staff which resulted in my debit card being charged for another guest's incidentals (£214 worth!). They quickly confirmed it was a mistake on their part, apologised and said they would refund the amount that day. In all my years of travelling I've never had this happen to me before but the reveiw is really for the hotel to tighten up on these things to avoid this happening again. They sorted out the situation quickly and did give me some freebies on check out as a goodwil gesture. Overall I cannot fault the hotel but admin wise something so serious should not have happened in the first place.

Stayed for four nights over New Year’s. We arrived early after an overnight flight from New York and even though I requested early check in, we were told the room wouldn’t be ready until 2 pm. Had drinks, an early lunch and hit the Rodin Museum. Came back after 2 and the room still wasn’t ready. But they offered us two free drinks while we waited longer which was really only a couple of minutes. The hotel concierge was very responsive to my incessant questions around COVID testing, arranging an amenity for a friend’s birthday (which I had to retract since they canceled last minute), as well as holding a gift that a friend left at reception for our arrival. We stayed in a junior suite which was quite spacious with a separate deep soaking tub and rainfall shower. The only quirk with the room was that the bathroom door wouldn’t stay open on its own, so we used the slippers as a makeshift door stopper. We also couldn’t figure out how to turn the heat off in the room, but luckily it was quiet outside (we faced the courtyard) so we could sleep with the window open. Loved the Clarins products and the fact that they were not in individual bottles so more eco friendly.
We used the fitness room each morning which only had other guests the first morning. Protocol said only two people in the room at time, but there were four of us for a total of about 15 minutes. The other three mornings, we were the only ones. Small gym but there was chilled water and towels. Though no sanitizing products to clean the machines.
The location was pretty central to reach a lot of sites by walking including Musee d’Orsay and Musee de l’Orangerie as well as some great restaurants.
All of the staff that we interacted with were friendly and accommodating of my poor French. Even putting up with my angry husband when he couldn’t figure out how to type the reception email correctly in order to print out our negative COVID tests.
I would highly recommend the hotel and look forward to another stay.

Dear Michelle, We are thrilled to read your review! I cannot thank you enough for these wonderful words about the hotel and its staff. Our team at the reception is always at your disposal to offer you the best addresses as well as help on the realization of PCR test. Indeed, AccorHotels is committed to helping preserve the environment with the Planet21 program. At l'Echiquier, we focus on reducing waste and are proud for choosing Eco-Pump for Clarins Products. I take note of the lack of disinfecting wipes in our gym and the cleaning service will be more aware of this. All the team and i thank you sincerely for having the time to leave this fantastic comment. We hope to welcome you back very soon!! Warm regards, Hoda - Guest Experience Manager

You know the agony: should you bring your own hair dryer with you on vacation, or risk using the hotel’s? You could end up trying to style your hair with a dryer that appears to be run by squirrels.
But not at this hotel. And that, my friends, is a metaphor for our experience there.
We bookended a river cruise with stays at this hotel. It is a beautiful space, and the rooms are comfortable and quiet. The bathroom is modern and well-stocked (including the aforementioned hair dryer, a veritable Porsche of hair dryers!). The breakfast, though pricey (26E pp), had an excellent range of choices. My only complaint is that the rooms were both very warm, we couldn’t get the thermostat to cool it down enough and had to sleep with the windows open (it was still quiet btw).
The front end of our trip was awesome: excellent guidance on restaurant choices, professional and helpful front desk staff. I want to call 2 staffers out by name: Hoda and Shawn, who got me through a MasterCard disaster that left us high and dry on cash.
The back end of our trip was not as great as the first— things seemed not as crisp (housekeeping forgot to clean our room, then ignored a written note on the bed (in French) asking for more towels), front desk forgot to order our 6:30 am taxi to the airport, also struggled to print out our bill, the front desk guy who checked us in seemed annoyed by my questions about COVID testing, etc.). But again kudos to Hoda who came through with a reservation for the BEST RESTAURANT of our entire trip.
I wish I could give 5 stars to Hoda and 4.5 for the hotel, because they were near perfect.
