Besançon…a hidden gem, made perfect by staying at this great hotel. There is parking (after a somewhat twisty drive into the property), the staff is knowledgeable, kind and attentive, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the prices very reasonable. Our two nights here were the surprise highlight of our recent France trip. I speak French (probably poorly, but the... More

We stayed here for two nights in January for a weekend in the Franche-Comte region. The staff had poor but working English skills, and didn't give any attitude about having to speak it, which was nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The parking is free but very tight. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the bathroom was lovely... More

We did not expect to stay in this hotel as we were walked out by the Hotel Florel at 10pm after a long day trip from Bruxelles and Luxembourg on that day. It might be fortunate to stay at Le Sauvage instead. Simply outstanding hotel, especially genuine caring service. The employees totally made our stay unique and memorable from arrival... More

We spent 4 nights at Hotel Le Sauvage. Even though we got one of the last 2 rooms available, it was very nice. Decor is modern, freshly updated, with subtle, trendy colors and bathroom. The bed was a king - not usual for France. This was bigger and nicer than a hotel room 2 or 3 times the cost in... More

We decided to visit Besancon for a weekend and wished to stay close to the centre of town. Reading about several hotels, this one took our fancy due to its history and the fact it is out of the ordinary. The building housing the hotel is steeped in history and has been carefully renovated relatively recently. We are told each... More

A lovely hotel with great views, staff were very friendly and helpful, room was really nice and although you noticed a few creaking floors or footsteps it didn't disturb our sleep at all. Narrow streets when driving up and a little walk up and down hill to town centre but well worth it. Lovely.

We found Hotel le Sauvage via a New York Times article, and it lived up to its billing as a small, charming place to stay. We used Besancon as a base to explore the Jura wine region, and visit places like Chateau-Chalon and Baume-les-Messieurs. The hotel was perfect for that purpose. The hotel has a very gentle, relaxed vibe and... More

Stayed here for two nights in a very comfortable room with doors to it's own patio. The hotel takes a little finding, but once there the secure parking and quiet but accessible location to the centre all add to the quality of the stay. The hotel has benefited from a refurbishment to a high standard both in the bedrooms and... More

This is an elegant, exquisitely decorated renovated convent, atop the hill in Besancon. Think medieval ambiance. And medieval streets with barely enough room for one car. The hotel has parking in the garden behind it, very important. Everyone we interacted with were professional, helpful, and beautiful women (is this a European job title?). The views are breathtakingly beautiful. The breakfast... More

As an interior designer I think this hotel is one of the prettiest. In fact, they are better than many of the four star hotels we have stayed in. This building was a monastery that was completely redone with loving care in 2011, has classical elegant charm and is decorated very well. Our room was reasonably large, the bathroom was... More
