We needed a dog friendly hotel to break our journey to Southern France. We stayed on our way there and again on our way back. It was clean and comfortable. It was fairly central too. On our way there the receptionist Tracey was extremely helpful and lovely. On our way back the different receptionist was not as friendly and said she had no record of us booking for our dog. I showed her the email confirming our booking and she said she couldn’t trace it. Having said that we still got booked in. The room was clean and acceptable. The buffet breakfast was typical continental breakfast. They have a 24h reception and insist on you leaving your key. That is fine but the man on 24h reception is very surly - doesn’t crack a smile. Maybe it was the language barrier but we tried our best in schoolboy French! It served a purpose and wasn’t unpleasant but we thought it was expensive for what it was. It was however peak season and a town centre hotel that accepted dogs.

We only stayed for three days, but Tracy, a former French teacher from Detroit, was a treasure trove of information--not just about Tours, but about many other places in France. After making sure we got the best (restaurants, hotspots) out of Tours, she provided an excellent overview of Bordeaux sites since we were headed there next. If you're lucky, Tracy'll welcome you to Hotel Criden. The Hotel itself is clean, but not air conditioned. There is a fan provided for the bedroom, and the breakfast is pretty good. The location is a 10 minute walk from the downtown, and there is a bus stop maybe ten steps from the hotel. We paid 5 E a night for outdoor parking of our rental car. Be sure to check out the cathedral and Rue Colbert in Tours, and if you're into plants, do not neglect the very excellent and varied Jardin Botanique, a free attraction with wonderful plantings.

We planned to spend 4 nights here and then move to a B& B somewhere else. We felt so well that we actually stayed all our holiday here - 10 nights! Hotel is very well placed, close to the train station but away from its noise or the buzz of the old center, easy to access the Loire Valley castles either by car or train. 10 min walking to the old city, bus stop in front, private parking at extra cost but worth to pay. Room was quiet and very clean, staff very welcoming and nice - we had all in all very nice experience. Recommended if you want to stay in the city.

Where do I start......firstly the smell of stale smoke greets you at reception, fine if you like stale smoke, my family and I aren't smokers. It says there's parking at the hotel but isn't clear that you have to pay for that too!! Upon entering the triple room, you are greatly by stale smoke and fusty bedding/curtains my throats is sore this morning from breathing in the fustiness!! We had to have the patio door open all night because of the smell.... but even better there is a petrol station underneath the hotel and a main set of traffic lights.... if we've managed a full hours sleep I would be amazed....it's been like sitting on the edge of a well known race track all night, then at 6am had the petroleum tanker filling the station pumps!!! Followed shortly by the bins being emptied.. As said we are in a triple room but with two towels.....good job I brought my own. The beds are the most uncomfortable you could sleep on. Just before we went to bed the electric heater came on in the room which nearly set my coat on fire that was on the back of the chair in front of it!!! Couldn't work out where the new 'other' smell was coming from!! The shower has no door fairly typical in most hotels however by the time you've had your shower the whole room is like a swimming pool. The toilet is so high, I'm 5ft 7" and my feet barely touched the floor, that's when the seat itself didn't nearly fall off while sitting on it!! Small summary of our stay at the hotel....didn't do much in Tours as it was a stop off, we only stayed one night and glad we didn't book breakfast cannot wait to get out of here, not sure how it's managed to get the score it has.

A cold welcome, only interested in getting us to pay; inadequate lighting in room; a dreadful shower which poured water all over the bathroom floor; good breakfast. A diappointing visit and not worth the money.
