Wonderful to stay in a historic chateau and enjoy updated bathrooms, comfortable beds and a pleasant atmosphere. The owner and host, Laurent, was charming and helpful, especially when we were late because of a cancelled flight. He booked our late dinner at the restaurant across the fields, and it was so nice to unwind there after our travel troubles. The... More

How often do you get to stay in a Chateau that's still owned and run by the family?! The Count is immensely helpful and charming - as are his staff. The Chateau is a short drive from Saint-Jean-de-Luz set in its own grounds. It's a gorgeous building with a lovely swimming pool area. The Chateau is quite near a busy... More

A wonderful old chateaux amidst its own grounds. Busy main road and motorway nearby but thickness of walls(3ft/1m) mean no sound is heard within the building. Laurent (in whose family the chateaux has been for many generations) made us very welcome and told the history of the house also, and did everything he could to make our stay most enjoyable.... Personally I believe this chateau is quite amazing but then again it's our first chateau stay in France. The architecture, history and design is just beautiful! Our room was full of grandeur with high ceilings and a large picture window overlooking the gardens. Our king size bed was heavenly with soft pillows and sheets. Just a few minutes from the... More

We spent a lovely 4 nights at Chateau d'Urtubie in July 2015. We had a very friendly welcome by the current owner, the Count de Coral who showed us around the castle. Our (family) room was suitably grand but still had air conditioning and TV. There is a restaurant a short wal away, but we preferred the short drive to... More

We were delighted to come and stay at the Chateau d'Urtubie. It is exactly what a chateau ought to be complete with moat, remnants of the drawbridge, ramparts, keep, turrets, etc., etc. At the same time as being impressively romantic, it is wonderfully comfortable, and still feels like staying in a private home. The Count was a charming host and... More

We were received personally by the very friendly proprietor and Count of the Castle, who showed us also around in the very stylish place. The room and bath was large, xtremely tastefully furnished and decorated, with magnificent views into the park. The breakfast offered a broad variety, much more than you would expect from a normal french "continental" breakfast. Very... More

We stayed here for a few days in early October. The Count was so enthusiastic about his much loved family home and takes so much time to show you around the fantastic public rooms and make you feel welcome. We were offered one of two rooms on the top floor (there is a lift installed but we enjoyed walking up... More

Staying in a 14th Century château was a unique and very enjoyable experience which we would thoroughly recommend. The Count's tour and explanation of its historical significance was extremely interesting. Lovely grounds.

We spent 2 glorious nights in the Chateau d'Urtubie! The history of this place is amazing, dating back to the 13th century! You can still see the spider marks in the stone facade, caused by the cannon ball attack from the Wellington army. We received a personal tour by the Count himself, who is an actual descendant of the family... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Near the beaches of Saint Jean de Luz on the Spanish border, this fortified castle has belonged to the same family since it was built in 1341. Louis XI once visited the château, now renowned for its fine 16th and 18th century architecture and splendid 17th century lounges. It was raised to the status of Viscounty by Louis XIV. In the carefully restored interiors, it is easy to imagine the past splendour of the place. ... more   less
