Detailed Reviews
I had an incredible time here during the 3 weeks I was in Biarritz. I stayed at a number of places but the Surf Hostel Biarritz was by far the best. There is a brilliant atmosphere - very relaxed and friendly. It was so easy to meet so many amazing people - I have come away with a lot of friends! Dörte, the owner, was extremely welcoming and accommodating and always sorted any problems I encountered. And the volunteers were so much fun, always participating in hostel activities, whether it be surfing, volleyball, trips into the centre or playing games. I could not recommend this place more highly and cannot wait to return!

took a trip to Biarritz September 2011 with 2 friends not really knowing what to expect..... turned out to be an fantastic find. The staff are 100% top class! This is the only hostel i know of that cooks you up a mighty breakfast. in the morning! Biarritz is now my top destination in France the the coast is fantastic, the chilled out French cafe lifestyle and surfing make Biarritz the best surfing location in Europe. Plus it gets pretty consistent swell! to top that all off is Biarritz surf hostel is there Bed breakfast and surfboard all for around 30euro a night. what more could you ask for sun surf and class accommodation cant wait to head back next year.

by far THE BEST HOSTEL we've every stayed at! the staff are absolutely amazing and you end up hanging out with them most nights. the breakfast is delish, we had belgian waffles one day which was amazing considering we'd been living off stale bread most of our trip. the hostel facilities are really good (love the free bikes) the hostel itself is really beautiful, feels more like a house than a hostel which is lovely and the people you meet there all seem to be really nice and friendly. We've already been twice and will definitely be returning again! not a bad thing to say about this place!

Never stay there! Owner is rogue and dishonest.
We received the wrong door code to check-in by night. We could never enter at 10pm, and we had to book another hotel. Despite immediate messages, video, and screen captures, the owner doesn't care and refuses to reimburse: they sent a code; even we received it at 7:40am the day after; that's all for them! It's not a cancellation; we could never access the room. Their last replies are "reception is closed at 8pm" and "let it go!".
We have to open a procedure to expect being reimbursed when honesty could solve that within 24h.
PS: address is lost in the middle of a block of buildings; it took 30 minutes to find the door!

Its a decent enough Hostel. Good rooms, kitchen, breakfast and selection if surfboards. Staff were ok. BUT, it is advertised as being 15 mins walk from the beach but realistically it is 25 min walk. It advertises bikes, but all the bikes were broken which was a huge disappointment. All in all, a bit expensive for what you get.

This hostel ticked most of the boxes on paper: free bike and surf board hire, cooked breakfast daily and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, on too many occasions this was just not the case. Upon arrival we were not greeted by any staff and were very much stranded and left to our own devices regarding finding our room/use of the facilities. The next morning when we went to breakfast (which we were told was served from 8:30-9:30) at 9:20 we were greeted with slight hostility from the workers who had begun cleaning up already and told us that normally we should aim to get to breakfast 8:30-9; if only we had been told this before, maybe upon arrival? After breakfast we then attempted to hire out bikes to get to the beach only to discover that the bikes suited to carrying surf boards come at an additional price of €10 per bike; a hefty fee when we were expecting bikes to be free as advertised on the hostels website. Unfortunately the disappointment translated to our evenings too. The hostel does not make it as clear as it should that there is a curfew on noise at 10pm, including use of the snug room where there is a TV upstairs. For a group of young adults who have stayed in many a hostel between them, and used to many hostels even having bars open to the early hours of the morning, we found this inconvenient. This was exemplified on evenings where we wanted to stay up and chat as a group but were unable to use communal areas and found ourselves bound to our room
The hostel for all that I have mentioned above is very clean. Furthermore, there were some members of staff who were very kind (one night we were able to use the communal area to around 11:30 which was kind).
However, for any young groups of travellers looking for a hostel I would not recommend primarily because of the curfew times which I understand their reasons for however is not ideal on a travelling trip.

Hi Emma Thank you so much for your feedback and I do want to apolgize for our shortcomings. From our records you arrived after 17:00, outside of office hours. For arrivals outside of office hours we normally put an envelope with your name on it at the bottom of the stairs. In that envelope you would have found all of that information you needed. However it looks like the responsible person forgot to put your envelope there! I'm very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. You are totally right that breakfast is between 8:30- 9:30. I am very sorry that our staff didn't honor that on that particular morning. Our policy is to start clean up after 9:30. We will review this with our staff. We do not advertise the surf racks as free on the website, they are an extra. There is a free bus 2 minutes from the hostel that goes to the city centre. So usually our guests use the bus if they don't want to hire the racks. I'm sorry you felt like we were giving misleading information regarding the racks! It is a standard rule in most hostels to have a curfew time. This may have been inconvienent to you and Im sorry about that, but we have had big problems in the past with people using the kitchen to cook until the early hours in the morning, playing drinking games etc, which greatly disturbs other guests in the hostel. That is why we have this rule. We have never had a problem with this because people understand the reason behind why we operate like this. If people want to keep hanging out, they normally go into town. Every guest should be told this on check in, so I am sorry that you were not told. However you should have been allowed to get a glass of water from the kitchen. Normally the staff have to abide by the same curfew rules unless it is an exception for example: guest check-in etc. So I am sorry for the noise they made which disturbed you during this time. Again, I am sorry for your disappointment! Kind regards Johnny - Surf Hostel Biarritz & Bidart Management

One of the worst stays I've had in a while. On arrival we were put in the wrong room. After someone tried to get into our room a number of times- we went downstairs to check whether something was wrong. Initially we were told no, until someone tried again to get into our room. We went downstairs again and were moved into a different room. Not the best start! We stayed in the yellow room which had an uncomfortable bed which was bent right down the middle. The room wasn't well cleaned. Nor were either of the bathrooms- the one downstairs in particular was very dirty. The hostel is a good 20 to 25 minute walk away from the beach and restaurants and is not in a particularly nice area of Biarritz. The "full English breakfast" turned out to be an omelette. In all- this is not value for money. There are cheaper, cleaner places to stay closer to the beach.

Hello Toast 27 I would like to thank you for your sincere review, which I have taken into serious consideration. First of all, I would like to apologize getting off to the wrong foot with you by offering the wrong room. I have also considered the rest of your review, thank you for bringing these issues to my attention. I have not had any complaints so far about comfort of beds, however I will look into replacing the bed you mentioned should need be. I also apologize if cleanliness was not up to your standards, the hostel is cleaned daily and thoroughly around midday. However, I am now aware that with guests coming in after a day's outing in the afternoon and evening can create a less comfortable and clean environment. I will now include an evening clean in the day to day running of the hostel. As you said, the hostel is situated 20 minutes by foot to both beaches, Grand Plage & Cote de Basques. We are also located exactly half way between beach and airport. We do offer free bikes included with your stay and we provide information for a free public transport system throughout the town centre. I personally think its a reasonable distant however I consider your view more important and we will now offer a free daily shuttle service to the beach. I am especially sorry if you were disappointed with breakfast! As a experienced chef de cuisine I take great pride in my kitchen however I would like to mention that I do not and have never advertised a "full english breakfast"!!! The reason being I know the availability of "english" products such as bacon, baked beans, hash browns, hp sauce etc. are virtually non-existant in france and it would be sacrilege to recreate the "best of the british" with euro-ingredients. This is what I offer instead everyday: - tea/coffee/hot choco/fruit juice - toast/cereal/croissants/pastries/jams/nutella etc. - selection of a least 4+ fruit - a cooked breakfast (for example - cheese/ham/mushroom/tomato omlettes, stuffed mushrooms, eggs benedict, breakfast samosas, stuffed tortillas etc) all of which is home made and cooked fresh. I apologize if there was any mis-communication on our part. I would also like to break down our price in case of any misunderstanding. We offered you in 2012: Bed + Breakfast + Bike Hire + Surf Board Hire for 35€ p/p all inclusive Cheapest alternative: Hostel International Biarritz 27.50€ (45 mins to beach by foot) Cheapest Breakfast: Supermarché 5€ Cheapest Bike Hire: 10€+ per day Cheapest Surf Board Hire: 15€+ per day Total 57.50€ (Cheapest alternative) For poor value for money, unfortunately I think we have to agree to disagree! However, my point is not to discredit your poor review of us, less your unsatisfying experience. I would simply like to apologize, thank you for pointing out room for improvement as we try our hardest to see to it that every guest is more than happy with us and ask if there's anything I can do to help rectify our problem. Please feel free to contact me at surfhostelbiarritz@gmail.com Many thanks Jono Host & Manger Surf Hostel Biarritz

Stayed for three nights at Surf Hostel Biarritz after reading the other great reviews on Trip Advisor and it did not disappoint.
Jono and the other staff are so hard working and friendly and helpful.
The breakfasts are delish, better than any restaurant, and set you up for a morning of surfing. Having free boards and bikes is also brilliant!
15-20 min walk from either Grand Plage or plage de la cote de basque.
Great gang of like-minded people both working and staying there, overall fabulous experience. Would go back in a flash! Thanks Jono and co!

A bunch of us stayed at The Surf Hostel for a weekend of surfing in Biarritz and found it to be absolutely perfect for what we were after, with great bonuses thrown in. Jono and his team were very welcoming and extremely helpful and happy to give us the lay of the land and tell us where we should go. The breakfasts which were cooked for us each morning were wonderfully varied but all delicious - so much better than the all day, every day cooked breakfast you might expect. Was excellent value for money and hassle-free to have bikes and boards thrown in. The location was perfect for us too - not too far from the airport but still only a pleasant and easy stroll in to town. Even the after-stay-support was excellent: when I left a jacket there, Jono was extremely helpful in getting it sent back to me, the next day, free of charge. Great hostel, great team, great weekend had by all.

This was truly one of the greatest travel experiences of my life and it is all because of the guys that operate Surf Hostel Biarritz. Jono and Andrey are two of the nicest, most down to earth and sincere guys I have ever met in my life. At first I was worried that I might have booked myself into a house full of surfer 'brahs' but it ended up being very down to earth and friendly and by the end of the trip I did not want to leave. If I ever go back to Biarritz it will only be to stay here!
