Hotel's Favorite
I had a technical conference near the Central Library but I always prefer to stay a few blocks away to avoid meeting the same people again and again. My first time in Manchester so I chose this lovely Double Tree Piccadilly which was a few minutes walk from the conference location. Later I've learned of my excellent decision. The location of the hotel is perfect, by the canal, near Piccadilly station, many bars, grocery stores, and Market street. Of course you walk everywhere. The staff of the hotel and restaurant was gorgeous, all young vital, and efficient people. The best part was the room, even though small by US standards, it was unshakable, truly solid and no vibrations or noises or footsteps were ever noticeable. The room had this electric kettle that I used all the time. American hotels may need to learn to put an electric kettle in their rooms. Way to build and furnish a hotel for happy customers like me.

Me and my partner stayed for one night here. We had a view of the canal and the Holiday Inn hotel across the road. The room was big, bed very comfy and was a good hotel room. Their was hand sanitiser too (good to know) at reception. My favourite thing about the hotel was the location. Piccadilly station literally 2 seconds away. Food places like archies at your doorstep and canal street literally across the canal bridge. The only problem with this hotel was the lifts. As there were 3 of them you wouldn’t expect to be waiting that long. But overall it was a nice stay.

I stayed in Feb / March 2020 for 4 nights, and stayed in 2 different rooms. The stay was mostly positive, but there were a few issues that do need addressing. I had stayed in this hotel previously and had good recollections of it. If the hotel read this, some simple tweaks would greatly improve the stay experience. POSITIVES 1/. fantastic location (right next to main Piccadilly railway station), a block from Canal Street bars / restaurants, surrounded by good eating, and an easy stroll to all the sights. 2/. noise isn't an issue as the rooms were well insulated - although when we had a room with an adjoining door there was some noise transmission of TV / voices. 3/. mini-bar - for some reason all items in the minibar and restocking were free - which was a fantastic bonus when you want a drink / nibble 4/. wifi worked perfectly and quickly 5/. breakfast choice was quite good with only slight downsides (see below) 6/. the cocktail vouchers at check-in were very useful (limited choice as expected - but more than good enough) 7/. warm cookie on arrival 8/. the staff were, without exception, professional, friendly, and very helpful NEGATIVES 1/. toilet - the biggest issue. They just don't flush well, and in both rooms we had to jiggle, push hard against the panel, flush multiple times etc. to get it to flush. If my parents stayed here, they seriously would have an issue every using it as it required strength. This must be fixed urgently. 2/. lifts - they were a little slow, but a couple made nasty metal grinding noises. At first we thought it was maintenance going on, but it was everytime we used the lifts. Something is not right. Also we caught a lift on floor 10 that displayed it was on floor zero. And on zero, the indicator said the lift was on floor 5. It didn't inspire confidence each time we used the lifts unfortunately. 3/. the first room we had, the TV wouldn't work. We waited for the maintenance guy to come. He did and said he would return with a new TV. We waited and waited, and no-one showed, and no-one called. The wonderful people on reception sorted it. We couldn't move that night due to a full hotel - unless we wanted to downgrade - but for the next 3 nights we were upgraded to a much nicer room. And a few Hilton points thrown in. Problem solved very efficiently in the end. 4/. the lights in the bedroom are wholly inadequate. We could barely see, and reading in bed was a real issue. There were swivel lights, but they could only turn onto a book on one side of the bed, as the bed was narrower than the distance between the lights which had limited swivel angles. It really was quite annoying. The lamp on the other side of the room did not offer much light either and that was it for all the lighting in the room. Some simple changes could fix this. 5/. we were given a voucher for a free drink with food. We tried to use and were told that we were on the wrong side of the lobby to use it. Same food. Same kitchen. Really? We weren't impressed. In fact we were in the area that the guy who checked us in pointed to when giving us the voucher. The waiter said we could move into the other food area (where breakfast is served), just to order the same food, from the same kitchen, and then we would get a free drink. This is easily fixed in-house, and should be. 6/. the breakfast downside was that there were many tiny flies on the pastries in the side room where we were seated. I'm not sure how they managed to get in, but they obviously shouldn't have been there. The coffee machines weren't refilled often enough and on 2 out of 4 mornings, my cappuccino was only a cup of frothy milk with no coffee at all.
