Bought my elderly mother in law an afternoon tea voucher for Christmas 2019 as she loves an early summer special day out treat , with her sister. June 2020 .. The Hotel was shut & they were shielding .. The Midland Hotel is not willing to extend the voucher past December 2020 (expired November 2020) .. so they are just keeping our money!! An absolute disgrace .. think very carefully before buying anything from their voucher schemes!!!!

Booked solely down to the reason we walked past the hotel in March and loved it from the outside. Booked a family trip in June for July for 2 adults and a teenager. Booked a superior room. Room was fabulous although the wallpaper unfortunately was clearly a different colou oilr in a panel and stood out a mile. Room for 3 only had 2 cups, 2 towels, 2 robes no slippers as stated and 2 caffeinated coffee sachets. Room however was lovely and spacious and beds super comfy. Breakfast in the morning was some gross cocunutty gloop, a fruit pot, pain au chocolate and fresh orange, not a breakfast you would expect from a 4 star hotel, but only 2 delivered for 3 people. Although the lovely receptionist knocked this off our bill and refunded it. For the low occupancy mistakes like this should not happen, reception even confirmed booking for 3 people before arrival. My personal opinion with the level.of works being carried out the hotel should not be open. We would love to revisit when finished providing the price is right.

This hotel is having extensive work carried out so the usual facilities are not available. Be mindful that if you fancy a drink at the bar you have to book a table, that goes for all the decent bars and restaurants in the area. Our welcome was nice and the reception team very helpful. The standard room was big enough but a little tired, ceiling was mouldy as if there had been a leak. The hotel prides themselves on keeping guests safe and happy during these disconcerting times, however we found opened bottles of water and a half can of gin and tonic in the fridge which we advised the cleaner of, hoping that on our return they would have been removed, they hadn't. I'm particularly cautious of door handles and noticed that around the bathroom handle it was grubby and hadn't been cleaned. My husband tried to shower the following morning but the shower wasn't working, possibly due the work being done. Breakfast was in a take away bag, not bad only concerns were the products were warm as they had been left outside the room early in the morning. I would suggest that the bags are delivered to the room and placed in the fridge or at least a fridge facility were they could be collected from then at least it would have been edible.

The hotel emailed us the day before obviously due to Covid-19 closing the spa area and bars etc. We expected the building work but not to the extent when we arrived. The air con was turned off and sockets did not work either side of the bed. It was so hot we had to open the windows all night so the traffic noise kept us up. Terrible sleep. The reception staff did assist with sending more shampoo as there was only one small bottle and we wanted a shower before we went out and then in the morning. Same with the tea bags, only two in the room but more where sent. After the work being done they told us we had a newly decorated room but on arrival there was a big paint stain on the carpet as you walked in and cracks in the bathroom tiles. All in all it did not look finished and would struggle to imagine staying there again for the money! Friendly staff but when checking out could hear others complaining of similar issues. Maybe should hold off being open until all work has been checked and they can deliver a better experience for all.

We were made aware of the closure of the bars and restaurant facilities on the ground floor prior to our arrival, however, on check in were greeted by such a high volume of building noise felt “hard hats” should have been worn in addition to just hand sanitiser! Couldn’t communicate properly with the receptionist due to the high level of noise. Our rooms were comfortable, but both tv’s had no volume on BBC 1 or 2 and the fridge in our room did not work despite the light operating. Someone came to check the tv but could not resolve the problem and promised someone would come the next day to fix this which didn’t happen. Room safes are apparently also not available due to sanitisation issues as were extra clothes hangers when requested. Overall, we felt the hotel should have remained closed during this renovation period, or at least until the reception area could function property and I also question the ability to “socially distance” in this area. After expressing our concerns again on check out we were promised a call back from the duty manager, who was busy in a meeting at the time, but after waiting more than 2 weeks now this has not happened - hence posting this review?! Very disappointing and certainly not what we expected from such a high standard of hotel as previously experienced and as a result will be unlikely to return!
